They are doing it because some birds were named after people who owned slaves, or were white supremacists, or robbed indigenous graves.

The most famous person is John James Audubon. He was supposed to have been a racist so the Audubon’s shearwater and the Audubon’s oriole will be dropping his name.

This is all part of structural racism. This this should put an end to the world’s racial problems!

I thought this must be either a joke or an urban myth. But it’s true. Just Google it. Here’s an example from the full statement of the society.

“ Change three additional names: The committee also believes that, in addition to birds named after people, three names with derogatory or culturally unsuitable references should be changed. These are Flesh-footed Shearwater (a pale-pink-footed species whose name implies a default skin tone), Eskimo Curlew (“Eskimo” is a dated term for Indigenous peoples of the far north, now considered offensive), and Inca Dove (widely considered to have been given in error because of confusion by the dominant culture between the geographic locations of the Inca and Aztec civilizations).”

When will this madness end.

"The American Ornithological Society has announced that it will remove all human names for bird species. Their goal is to create a more inclusive environment for bird-watching fans."

One wonders what the new names will be.

I think jailbird will still be usable, but I don’t know about blackbird or redbird or redwing or robin red breast.

Here’s what they are after: for example, McCown’s Longspur, whatever that is. “ The name "McCown" refers to Captain John P. McCown, an American army officer who collected the specimen in 1851 that led to the species first being scientifically described. McCown later fought for the Confederacy, which led to controversy starting in 2018, with parallels drawn to the removal of Confederate memorials.”

The American Ornithological Society website says: “In 2020, reflecting the heightened awareness of systemic racism and the need to address these injustices across society, there was a public petition to the AOS to change all English bird names that were named directly after people (i.e. eponymous names) because several of the honored individuals are identified as symbols of racism and colonialism. The AOS initially approached this difficult issue through efforts led by members of the AOS Diversity and Inclusion Committee.” But, “Any effort to make such judgments on past and present human figures would invariably be fraught with difficulty and negativity and become an unwelcome public and scientific distraction.”

But in March, the National Audubon Society announced that after a year of study, it had decided to NOT change its name. From the NYTimes: “ The National Audubon Society announced on Wednesday that its board of directors had voted to retain the organization’s name despite pressure to end its association with John James Audubon, the 19th-century naturalist and illustrator who enslaved people, drawing backlash from fellow bird groups that have already changed their names. The bird conservation group said its decision came after more than a yearlong process that included input from hundreds of its members, volunteers and donors. Despite Mr. Audubon’s history as an enslaver with racist views toward Black and Indigenous people . . . “

So, this name change for birds is due to the American Ornithological Society caving in to demands by a tiny group of Woke people. As for me, I am PROcolonial. Most of my ancestors were colonizers, including William the Conqueror and the Viking Rollo, Duke of Normandy.

I think we should change all Bird names and use only the names that bird species use for themselves. It’s up to us to learn those names. Tweet Tweet will not be acceptable. (Grinning)

Meanwhile, in the song “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” the line “There goes Robert E. Lee” is being changed to “There goes the traitor to his country formerly known as Robert E. Lee.”

Meanwhile, I learned a few days ago that the 82 year old folk singer Buffy Sainte-Marie is not in fact a Canadian Indian, as she has claimed for sixty years, but born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, near Boston, to a family of Italian and English descent named Santamaria. Are there any birds named after her?

Let's resurrect some 12th century monks to revise the book of Genesis---after all Cain was a murderer---let's erase him. Heck (no pun intended), let's go back further and erase Satan. How about Abraham?--he was going to kill his own son. How about Joseph's brothers that sold him into slavery? OMG---I mentioned slavery---better erase this post.

True enough. As Dad used to say whenever some fringe group or cause made the news, "Good times".

But all this is really, is the tail wagging the dog. Back in the day, when the Freaks went from championing PeaceLoveDope to roosting in trees and chaining themselves to bulldozers, they were amusing. I remember joking the the first environmentalists were ex-hippies who found the only thing that would get them taken even semi-seriously. They were folks high on idealism (well, probably more than just idealism) but woefully short on knowledge, who had found a way to get their faces and names in media. It progressed (well, "progressed" might not be the right word) to things more in line with the topic of this discussion: first changing the way hurricanes were named; first moving away from single-sex names, then toward more "inclusive" names from minority segments of our society, etc. School names were changed as well; if they were originally named after someone who in the eyes of the former Freaks just didn't measure up to their standards, they hooted and hollered until they got a change in names. One of my favorites is the former Sibley High School near St. Paul, MN, now named Two Rivers High School, and originally named after a Minnesota pioneer and fur trapper who later became the state's first governor. However he also lead a punitive expedition against the Sioux in 1862, which in the opinion of the Social Justice crowd forever colored his name and rendered him unrememberable except in the most negative ways.

But the all-time champion in the ridiculous renaming department has to be Lake Bde maka ska. Any former Minnesotans here? Five points if you can pronounce it, five more if you can identify it by it's former name, and ten points if you can give the ridiculous reason for the change.

Oh well...

Next, the name "Hood" might imply a ghetto and therefore be racist.
Then, he stole from the "rich"---this offends wealthy people and together with the "Hood" reference might assign crime disproportionally to a certain ethnic group.

OP, the changing of the birds names, is what under Communism, would be called “brainwashing”. For example, “Eskimo” is an actual word and people don’t like their PEOPLE to be called “Eskimo”. However, those with agendas to try to make others feel guilty, come up with various excuses. I think it’s time to call it what it is.

Oh, I don't think so. Unless you were being sarcastic. The world is a large place with a lot of leaders who don't give a damn about racism.

I was being sarcastic. But my wife always doesn't get it either!

"The American Ornithological Society has announced that it will remove all human names for bird species. Their goal is to create a more inclusive environment for bird-watching fans."

One wonders what the new names will be.

I feel bad for The Woodpecker :icon_wink:

Dumbest thing I have ever heard. Birds can’t even hear you call them names. The world has gone totally crazy.

Can I be offended that you are offended or is that offensive to you? Asking for a friend

I offended and call no “offense backs”. So there.

I really thought this was a joke until I read this:

The American Ornithological Society has vowed to change the English names of all bird species currently named after people, along with any other bird names deemed offensive or exclusionary.

"Names have power and power can be for the good or it can be for the bad," says Colleen Handel, the society's president and a research wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Alaska. "We want these names to be powerful in a really good way."

I think Colleen Handel needs to start looking for a new job.

Going with the flow, rather than standing her ground. There seems to be a lot of that recently

"Names have power and power can be for the good or it can be for the bad," Ah, here is the manipulation, the brainwashing. WHO determines the “good” or “bad”? In the back of my mind, I can hear Karl Marx’s voice.

Um, you actually hear Karl Marx talking to you? Hmm. Do you converse with him? Often? Does he have an accent?

She probably doesn't. But I "see" his footprints on the road to our destruction.

He is my nightmare! My family left my native country (Central Europe) due to Communism. If you have never lived under it, just think of North Korea.

You will never be woke enough, never sufficiently ideologically pure. They will continue to raise the bar to the point that only the ideological elites will achieve Wokeness. This is a cult- "The Cult of the Easily and Frequently Offended". As with all cults blind fervor replaces rational, real-world thinking. This mindset is an addiction. They will never see the world as fully Woke. They will always dig further and further. As time goes by, these cultists will some day rule the world. Individual free expression; which we daily watch being criticized and canceled will be replaced with approved mundane politically driven drivel. Language will be pared down to a few thousand bland, inoffensive words, and eventually, as predicted in countless science fiction books and movies, everyone will wear an approved uniform. They defend Political Correctness by saying things like, "What's so wrong with insisting people be treated kindly". Most people don't object to many of the changes that see people being treated better. That isn't the objection. The objection is that as they dig deeper and deeper, finding more and more victims, the finger pointing and name calling increases so that all who don't fully embrace their radical Wokeness are "Nazis". The woke, social justice activists comport themselves like new Victorians, or McCarthyites, monitor everyone’s behavior, words and art for transgressions against their worldview. The woke are the new fundamentalists. Their tactics are damaging to a liberal society that believes in the free exchange of ideas and free speech. They weaponize social media and are turning us into a surveillance society. In the name of democracy, freedom, reason and the Enlightenment, it’s so important to push back against this radical cult

Yes, notice in a cult you are never the leader, you are always cast as a follower. Basically, you are told what to think.

Might be other problems there.
First, he was a man with a woman's name, but neither gay nor transgender----both those communities might be offended.
Next, the name "Hood" might imply a ghetto and therefore be racist.
Then, he stole from the "rich"---this offends wealthy people and together with the "Hood" reference might assign crime disproportionally to a certain ethnic group.
Fourth, he gave to the "poor"----the PC term might be "asset challenged"

Personally, I'd rather give those behind this nonsense "the bird" rather than rename them :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:Looks like we have some book burning to do! While we are at, let's burn Sherwood Forest. (After we find a new home for all the birds we renamed)

Once we are done taking down the statues, let's burn the great pyramids. They were built by slaves. Oh! Oh! What??? The pyramids are in Africa?? Looks like we did all of this for NOTHING. The continent of Africa was one of the first to start slavery. My bad....

Who cares if every race were once slaves. It's all about ME!

Slavery still exists. Wouldn't it be better if the activists spent their time addressing this? But, NO! Changing names of birds, removing statues, etc.. is the way to go! What are they trying to prove?

Did anyone read of the Antioch school teacher placed on leave?

The teacher's Halloween costume was the Scooby Doo Mystery Van. Around her body was cardboard painted to look like the van. She painted her face black and wore a green moon above her head to represent the night sky. Can you guess why she was placed on leave?

You got it! She painted her face black! Even though it was clear she was dressed like the night sky, she was placed on leave.

"She was placed on leave"
. She was probably placed on leave by the SCHOOL BOARD who are elected by the parents of the district. So someone must have made enough noise to get her placed on leave. That is the frightening part ...... You only need one really LOUD activist to get things riled up. Remember Hitler?

My favorite was college professor who was fired for saying Niggardly in a lecture. He was re-hired after eggheads looked up the word. Wonder if this post will be pulled if mods don't look it up? BTW: it means Stingy.

PTSD is a bitch. Honestly, I can see why some people get hurt so easily. It is not justified, but I can see why. Invisible wounds are very difficult to heal and it takes a lot of time and goodwill.
