Duplicate Yamaha Golf Cart Keys

I recently purchased a 2017 Yamaha golf cart, but only one key was available from the owner. I have researched everywhere, but cannot find a place to get duplicate keys. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Order Yamaha key blanks from Amazon and bring them, along with the working key, to ACE hardware and they will cut keys for you.

If it was me I get new uncommon keyed switch and just replace it. Takes less than 5 mins 10 if you slow and you don’t have same keys as majority of other Yamahas.

I agree with changing the keyed switch, I bought a "universal" auto ignition switch for around $15 and installed in place of the Yamaha universal key switch. Took about 10 minutes. NOTE: Our golf cart had 2 wires to the switch, some carts have 4 wires, I have not done this on a 4 wire system, so I would need to research the use of the additional switch contacts.

get a non golf cart or uncommon switch. Its too easy for those universal golf cart keys to be used when you are at dinner some night.

All of the carts that are sold by VGC have uncommon key switches. You can get a blank key from them. You can also just replace the entire switch, it's very easy to replace.

Where are there a lot of golf carts being stolen? I thunk I've read about two this year. There may have been more than that stolen but I would think that if there were a lot it would habe made the news.

2 or 3 from parking lots with one of those having the keys in the ignition and one from a garage. Please enlighten us with some facts concerning this rash outbreak of stolen carts.

You can get a new on made at one of the box stores. I would suggest getting a completely new ignition with 2 sets of unique keys so the you golf cart is difficult to steal. About $30.00 if I remember correctly. Just make sure you give them the correct Year and model number for your cart.

1. Replace the factory ignition switch with a regular automotive switch with a unique key. The top of the dash comes off after removing one screw under the 1" diameter Yamaha logo in the front center of the dash. I've only seen Yamaha's with a two-wire switch which makes it very easy to change out. It's easiest to first attach wires to the new ignition switch and then connect them to the original wires using either plastic "wire nuts" which screw on or use connectors which crimp on.

2. install an ignition cut-out switch. Again, you cut one of the two wires from the ignition switch an place a toggle switch somewhere out of sight-perhaps inside the glove box (if you have a dash cover with doors over the cubbyholes Yamaha places at each end of the dash. I went a different direction and installed a "barrel switch" in the dash next to the regular ignition switch. Amazon has two brands of these for sale. Buy the one that is more expensive, the cheap one is junk. Had I thought this through, all I needed to do was install the barrel switch and not bother with the new ignition switch. You can do the same thing; however, that still leaves you with the problem of getting a second key made.

3. Will you be driving your cart to the stores on 441--Lowes, Home Depot, Sam's club? Will you be leaving it in large parking lots for some time while you are shopping or dining? Will you be leaving it outside on your driveway overnight? If so, you should install a "brake lock". This can be done by any Yamaha dealer or one of the cart services that come to your home. If you have minimal skills and tools, do it yourself. You drill a hole at the top right corner of the brake pedal, and a corresponding hole in the floor. Install an eyebolt in the hole in the floor, using a large washer on each side and a nylock nut on each side. Buy a decent padlock ( I like one with a 1/4" shank by MasterLock for$15) and then adjust the eyebolt so the shank of the padlock can be inserted through the eye and then through the hole in the brake pedal.

This prevents a thief from kicking off the brake and pushing or towing the cart around the corner where he can hot-wire the ignition (just as easy as installing a new ignition switch) or loading it in on a trailer and it driving away.
