View Full Version : Jewelry appraisal / repair question

Hello, What jeweler would you use in the local area, including TV and as far as Ocala, to appraise and repair fine diamonds / diamond jewelry? Asking for a friend. His concern is to get accurate appraisals; and to get a report in order to avoid the stone(s) being switched in the event of a future repair being needed. He wants an AGS certified jewelry company/jeweler, and a GIA gemologist.
Here is the info he would like to get:
"A written report of the diamond’s dimensions, approximate body color, and clarity with a diagram mapping significant inclusions and external blemishes; before you deliver custody of it for ring resizing or other work. Thus, what is returned to you can be compared to what you gave to the person or firm doing the work."
Thanks in advance, Freeda

I agree with the prior poster, Coast to Coast is very reasonable and they do very nice work. My wife has had a couple of items repaired there and she was very happy.

I had something repaired for a friend. They have an on-site repair guy who did a good job. They seem to be upfront and flexible with sales. But I don't think I could trust any jeweler. They all seem to be kind of shady. Of course, I'm too cheap to buy expensive jewelry. To me, the best place to buy jewelry is Costco because you can return it for a full refund at any time, even years later. If you buy something from a local jeweler, you will never get a refund.

Asking for a friend? If that is true, your friend should ask themselves. Switching stones is criminal THEFT. Proving it is difficult-chain of custody. Resizing can often be done while you wait. If, an older mount, it may be worn and a remount, to prevent stones from falling out may be wise.

Coast to Coast, on CR 301, just north of CR 466, on the west side of 301. We have been using them for more than 10 years. Very honest, and reputable. It's a family owned business. Chris is a particularly nice fellow. The store is behind Gio's Italian restaurant.

Gold in Art. They reset my diamond into a new ring, appraised the stone and the ring, and added an ID # to the stone.

I never understood spending a lot of money on diamonds and other jewelry. The only people who make money are the dealers who sell it. An appraisal is only good for insurance purposes. I love the TV commercial where they say that they will appraise it for double the actual value. That tells you how crooked they are. Jewelry may have sentimental value but nothing else. If you buy expensive jewelry, buy it from Costco because you can always get your money back. My opinion.

Many people come from families where valuable (genuine) jewelry is handed down from generation to generation so I really understand the reluctance to just walk in, hand a piece over, and "trust" none of the stones will be exchanged and so on. ! Anyone who has been in the business, as a gem buyer for a jeweler for instance, knows the whole system; grading, cut, mark-ups, "middle" men, and so on. Diamonds in particular are a story unto themselves, and the natural vrs. created emeralds, rubies, sapphires, etc. ? READ all the information you can before buying and then STILL be very very cautious. Diamonds that once were considered nearly useless due to the percentage of carbon and other undesirables, usually were used in a variety of industrial purposes... until, the discovery of ... CHOCOLATE diamonds, then, partially due to advertising as THE hottest item in the gem market, their value soared as many sought to purchase "chocolate diamond" jewelry.

Not to be a wet blanket, but I'll echo the sentiments of some posters. I don't trust jewelers as a group. Maybe one or two who I've known for years, but even then you never know. Years ago my mom had a Mikimoto pearl necklace that needed to be re-strung, so she took it to a jeweler who had a pretty good local reputation. He re-strung it and returned it to her. Years later (after the jeweler was no longer in business) she noticed that several pearls in the strand had begun to flake. She took it to another jeweler who appraised it and said that several of the original stones in the strand had been replaced with inferior ones! Not a nice thing to find out especially as the pearls were a gift from Dad.
Also concerning the 100% of purchase price trade-in guarantee that some (probably most) jewelers offer...it is really a money-maker for THEM. I bought my wife a marquise-cut diamond some years back. Fifteen years later the stone in that ring would have retailed for something like three times the price I paid. Unlike just about every other thing we buy, natural, good-quality gemstones appreciate in value. Had we decided to trade at the "$100% trade-in guarantee" given to us at the time of purchase, the jeweler would have made out like a bandit.
Caveat emptor. Especially regarding jewelry.

I agree. Even if your jewelry hasn't appreciated, the trade-in value will only be worth the full retail price of new items, not the discounted price. Costco will give you a full refund, not a trade-in.
When I helped a friend buy a $10K ring a few years ago, I was shocked that every jeweler offered to cheat Florida of the 7 percent sales tax by removing the ring from the box and shipping an empty box to an out-of-state address provided by the customer. One "prominent" jeweler even offered a deep discount for paying in cash, no check or credit card. I assumed the jeweler was not going to report the sale to the IRS.
