After doing some preliminary research, it seems the biggest bang for the buck for my wife and I will be to use Centric for our internet ($50 a month) plus Philo for streaming ($25 a month). However, we may still not get local news. So my question is, who would we contact to get someone to install an old-fashioned antenna in our attic? Please advise.

I believe that both HULU Live and Youtube Live carry local stations.

OP, depending on where you live OTA (Over The Air) television may be very limited, I have an 80 mile rated antenna, with an amplifier and cannot get Orlando reliably. One day I get 65+ channels and the next I am luck if I get 10 , this is with the antenna OUTSIDE and I am sure reception will be worse inside the attic.
As noted above, do some investigation as I recall there are streaming services for local stations.

We use a free app on our smart tv called Haystacks News. It gives us wesh 2 news for central FL plus other networks. I’m not sure though if that is a LG tv exclusive or not. Check your smart tv’s “App Store” there might be something comparable.

That is exactly right. I went to Best Buy recently to buy an antenna and was discouraged to do so because of the limited range of reception.

Good pick on the internet service, fiber is the best option. Why not get the centric tv service too? We had philo and youtube tv and got rid of them within 4 months.
Roku is just a piece of hardware that allows you to run apps/services on it, no different than using Apple TV 4K boxes or a firestick, you will still need to subscribe to tv packages.
Check with your cell phone carrier because some of them have deals/specials with tv services. For example, we get Apple TV+, paramount+, Netflix for free, $5 off philo, and we got $10 or $15 off YouTube tv thru our cell phone carrier.

If you have a smart tv you can download “very local” which is NBC’s local network. I’m assuming you can get it on ROKU also or you can download the app to your smartphone and then stream it to your tv. I’ve been hoping that CBS would do the same but so far no luck.

When I started with YouTubeTV it was $45 . It is now $82.50. I don’t have any “add-on” packages.
I’ll keep it through football season, then I’ll drop it again.
I really only watch about 6 channels.
I’m thinking about just downloading each of those apps.
I live in Sunset Pointe and was also advised not to spend $$ on an OTA.
I always enjoy these threads and hearing what everyone else is doing.

I do the same. There is no reason to pay for local news. Get the fiber internet and a good streamer if your TV is lacking and you will be able to stream most of what you want, i.e. local channels for free.


Antenna and cable are obsolete, you can stream everything these days.

Also don't fall for those "special deals" offered by the cable companies. They low-ball you to get your business then they raise their prices a year later and you have to go fight with them. With fiber internet they generally keep the prices stable, no tax, no fees.

Try B Smart, a service sold at Markets of Marion. Allows you to get every channel that's out there. You need one box/TV, they are expensive, around $200. Service is $25/mo, $45/mo for 2 TV's. We've had it about a year. You net internet to run it. Works great, except when the signal is weak during peak times around supper. We have Comcast, 400mb, and often the signal is so weak we get surfing circles. I'm told fiber would eliminate this, Only Centric has fiber, and not sure if they are in TV.

We did the fire stick and added 5 Star cable for $32 per month. Every station you could think of. So far very happy

Note that there is a difference between having access to the live local channels on a 24/7 basis and watching recorded local programs on a free app. To get full access to live local channels, you usually must subscribe to a streaming or cable service that charges a monthly fee, use an antenna, or do something illegal.

I wonder if Xfinity internet will support Xfinity streaming? I could imagine them not allowing a customer to purchase their services that way and avoid paying the higher amount for Xfinity cable TV. I know their Flex box that they provide (provided?) with their internet would not run some apps that offered channels available on their cable service.

Just something to ask about before agreeing to a contract.

I have the app from Philly streams. I get all stations plus all nfl games and more.

We have an Amazon Fire Stick and use the free "Local Now" app to watch the local and national news for free.
Also has a ton of channels, TV shows and movies, all free.

When I am outside of my house and I want local or national news, I use an "old fashion" device called a radio. Some people even have them in their vehicles.
