Yeah! After a natural disaster, cars are mangled or destroyed by flood waters. If you ever have an opportunity, walk an area that has been struck by a hurricane, tornado, or flooding. The MASSIVE amount of cars destroyed will boggle your mind.

There is that, and much more. How about the likes of Dan Newlin and Morgan & Morgan, the large number of both very old drivers and tourists in rentals with screaming kids, dangerous cars on the road (no annual safety inspections), and partying vacationers such as spring breakers. It’s the perfect storm for insurers. We pay significantly less to insure 2 newer vehicles up north than our one late model Village’s garaged car, which we drive less miles per year than our golf carts.

Bingo! All very much a part of the soaring rates.

Another very large slice of that pie is the number of uninsured motorists infesting Florida roads. Florida ranks sixth in the nation at 20.4% per capita uninsured motorists, but that doesn't begin to tell the whole story. 20.4% in a state like, say, Idaho, where you can drive for an hour or more without meeting another vehicle, is negligible. 20.4 in Florida, where the geezers, 3rd country cowboys, and folks speeding because they're late for whatever, on roads that are often bumper-to-bumper in what seems like ever-shrinking spaces, is a whole 'nother story. A mishap with an uninsured motorist in, say, Boise, might mean a fender-bender. One in Miami, Jacksonville, etc. might easily result in a five-vehicle pile-up.

Those insurance guys aren't singling out The Sunshine State because they're after a quick killing (no pun intended). They're motivated by statistics and the bottom line. Florida's auto insurance rates are what they are because of the drivers inhabiting the roadways here, and the resultant expenses to the insurance companies incurred thereby.

Fortunately, most of us after we are retired can go down to one car and maybe a golf cart. Or two golf carts and rent a car/hire transportation when you need it.

Another thing to do, if you don't drive your car that much, is to check with your insurance company to see if they will reduce your premium if you don't drive that much. Not a huge amount, but why pay like you drive your car 15,000 miles a year when you don't go over 5,000?

Finally, increase your deductible. Most should be able to afford the first $1,000 of any damage/repair. Many people carry $250 or $500.

Add to that some TikTok challenge with instructions on how to disable theft systems and steal Hyundai's! Yay!! We have 2!! This is the story we got when we just got our latest bill with an increase. Our cars are not new and (we think) rates should be dropping as they age, but....no.

Hyundai, Kia Provide Anti-Theft Software Update | NHTSA (https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/hyundai-kia-campaign-prevent-vehicle-theft). Everyone took a hit on car insurance your agent is just using talking points not everyone owns a Hyundia.

Florida is a large state. We moved from Pompano Beach, just north of Fort Lauderdale to the Villages in June. We got a refund on our auto insurance. Moving to the Villages has been a great financial move for us. Cheaper auto insurance, home insurance, property tax, gas prices, food prices, parking prices (can't park anywhere near the beach without feeding a meter). No complaints here!

Lest us not forget states that are just handing out licenses. Doubt they are handing out insurance to go along with the licenses. Where does one think those northern drivers will be driving to as snow birds? Crazy FLORIDA drivers?

FL does have one of the highest rates of uninsured motorist accidents... hmmm... why is that??

Buckle up and raise your uninsured motorist coverage cuz you are right, M n M is nationwide. 1990 they were a small family business in Orlando. So too was T V a small family business. Growth - a double edge sword.

Sadly it is almost impossible to address the OP post without going into the world of politics....because thats where it lies. Texas and Louisiana both have hurricanes, ambulance chasing lawyers, and bad drivers yet their insurance is somehow managable. If the state would mandate a driving test for those over 80 every year and would repossess cars if you did not have a license we could get these rates down very quickly. But the elderly vote still so politicians won't touch this and how would are Developer and others get these houses built so quickly without the illegals. Follow the money it is not going to go down anytime soon. On the good side we do not pay state income taxes so it's a wash the way I look at it.

Nope. Don't have to go anywhere the dreaded "P" word is brought into play.

Simple answer:

Florida is CROWDED. Texas and Louisiana aren't. Texas has 29,527,941 people living there. Florida has 21,781,128, and Louisiana 4,624,047.

Florida is SMALL

Not the rust belt down here where 5 year old vehicles are rusty PO* due to owners lack of maintenance. More fraud in state inspections than Medicare care supplements. I was in state that required NEW vehicle state inspection, what waste of time and money for someone to slap sticker on. Now I could see 5 year old or more safety inspection cause most people don’t know what or where dipstick is Let along how to check air in tire.

Florida a long time ago decided to do away with inexpensive required annual auto safety inspections. Drivers who are too cheap to buy insurance are also too cheap to get their brakes fixed or bald tires replaced. I have been rear ended by these drivers on occasion.

I’m 66 and I volunteer. We NEED to get bad drivers off the roads…regardless of age! I’ve driven well over 4,000,000 miles through all lower 48 in the course of my life and have seen the results of poor drivers. It doesn’t end well.

Not to change the subject, but I wonder if an electric golf car, when it is one’s primary means of transportation, can qualify for an energy tax deduction? If my new solar tubes do, why not my electric golf car?

Yes Fl drivers seem to drive fast. However California has many uninsured motorists, high speed drivers, damage to cars from fires and mudslides. I would also guess CA drivers drive many more miles.

It's only political because some choose to make it that way. It is true, states have insurance commissions that manage insurance companies that do business in their state, but other than push back when a company wants to up rates, not sure what they can do.

It does appear that Florida is quite litigious. There have been attempts to curb that, but there is only so much that can be done.

Hurricanes/floods cause cars to be damaged/totaled. I would be in favor of a surcharge on those that live within XX miles of the shore areas, so they share more of that burden vs those of us to chose to live inland.

Uninsured motorist is a problem. The ability to avoid being insured and still drive is something that could be addressed better. Seems every time someone goes through a toll booth/scanner one of the things that could be checked at that point is if their insurance is current, car is registered, etc. Such devices could be set up randomly at other than tollway locations to catch those that don't use tollways.

I would be in favor of inspections for safety issues - brakes and tires being the primary items.

All non-political things.

I used to have a boss who would always send me a memo to “take appropriate action.”
