View Full Version : Package thief turned out to be an Amazon contractor

My husband and I were each expecting a package from Amazon yesterday, his a small item and mine much larger. We each got a "delivered" e-mail with a photo showing a package at our front door. I thought mine seemed awfully small. When we got home there was only one package, his small one. We looked at the photos again and my husband said "they're both the same box!" We reviewed our doorbell camera footage and saw the delivery guy walk up holding the small box, look around behind him, drop the package at the door, and take a picture. Then a minute later he came back empty-handed, turned the box on its side, and took a second picture, which is the one I got. He had a big grin on his face the second time like he couldn't believe how clever he was to figure out such a great scam. He was driving a Hertz truck, which is why we suspect contractor rather than Amazon employee.
Amazon gave us our money back and didn't seem all that surprised. I just hate to think about how many of our neighbors he may have victimized and how many could be suspecting their neighbors of stealing their packages.

Wonder what Amazon did with driver. They will know who he is.. They won't have a clue and simple don't care. They wouldn't ever look at your videos. The "CS" reps just take your word for it and give you a refund (up to a point). Now if that was a $300 item the outcome will be very different.
However, if the same thing happens again, even though it is NOT your fault it is likely they will refund you and close your account no matter what proof you have. There are hundreds of examples of this happening on various forums (especially Reddit). Reddit - Amazon Prime (https://www.reddit.com/r/amazonprime/)
Even if only HALF of what is posted there is the truth you'll be concerned on what is happening with Amazon recently. Their "bots" are going nuts.

Wow! That's a good reason to consider delivery to one of their pick-up locations.

Amazing how Amazon became the worlds biggest retailer, without having a clue, or care what is going on!

Long ago they cut off a thief's hand for stealing. No- I don't advocate that punishment- but it does show that theft used to be considered a big deal. Not any more. Theft is now a relatively safe crime. Thieves can appear in court dozens of times without serious consequence. Wonder if that is why some people take the law into their own hands and shoot people attempting to steal from them. One final thought- If you are a thief you are a low-life!

Why you have cameras at your house
We have had cameras at our homes in TV since 2010, and at northern homes.
In TV keep track of lawn guys, deliveries, and the guys trying to sell you a roof. After a storm any damage, and see what walks in the yard.
Up north, lawn guys, deliveries, how much snow, did we get plowed, and who is checking on the houses. What walks through the yard and We can also have a conversation through the cameras, so our grands always say hi, and show us the mail, and the big snowman in the front yard.
Cameras are first, home Watch second in providing security in our homes.

As far as I know, cutting off a hand was never a legal punishment in this country. But, it was and it still may be allowed in Saudi Arabia. When I lived there in the late 1970's, they would behead murderers in a public square in downtown Riyadh. It was a huge spectator event every Friday at noon.

Amazing how Amazon became the worlds
biggest retailer, without having a clue, or care what is going on! The largest doesn't make them good. Only large. Xfinity is the largest cable/internet provider in the country. What does that prove?
I can only hope you never have a problem with them. Like Xfinity they are great UNTIL you have a problem. Not going to post my story but hopefully you don't need their help for a missing package (over $300) or getting a credit when double billed for keeping something they told you to dispose of. Doing a CC chargeback gets your account closed.
Read some of the Reddit stories and like I said if only 1/2 of them are true they are getting very bad.

Wow! That's a good reason to consider delivery to one of their pick-up locations.Yea, for delivery it is good but NEVER put a return in one of those boxes although it is easy for them to say something was delivered when the driver never put it in the box. AT least with home delivery they take a picture of every package they drop off. Fedex left a package for me at the wrong house by 2 doors last week but they also take a photo so I was able to find out who got it. Fortunately they didn't wear a 12 WIDE Brooks Adrenaline. :D

I’ve had the same problem but because our driver didn’t photograph anything, I just turned around and reordered the merchandise. What can you do?

First Amazon is not perfect, I recently ordered two of the same type of item, one was delivered on one day and the other 3 days later. One time I had a driver deliver the wrong package and when I approached them before they drove away, they realized that my package was delivered to the wrong home, and I had theirs. As a previous poster claims that Amazon will do little to reprimand a driver if he did do something wrong, the poster is correct. I use Amazon all the time and I found when there is something wrong with an item, they find it more convenient and less expensive to give me a refund and tell me to keep the product. I'm sure Amazon has concluded as long as it falls within a certain price range it's the cost of doing business.

A friend here in The Villages bought a $1,000 mirrored card table from India on Wayfair. One corner was damaged in shipping or delivery. When she to complained to Wayfair, they had another one delivered. Same problem. She complained again. A third one was delivered. Same problem. So Wayfair gave her THREE $1,000 tables for free, and she did what Way,ark recommended and donated them to a company that would fix them and sell them cheap to people in need. You know, people in need of a $1,000 mirrored card table. Each table, boxed, weighed about 150 lbs.

Does a mirrored card table help players see each other's cards?

Amazon delivers 1.6 million packages a day and employs over a million people so theft is evidently going to happen.
Reddit is a place where people go to whine about something that didn't go perfectly in their lives.
It's not a good gauge of the big picture and all the folks who get their packages without incident.

Hopefully, Wayfair didn't give her anything. The shipping or delivery company should have paid for the damaged tables.

I think that this punishment would be appropriate even in this country. Too many criminals get away without suitable punishment which encourages them to be repeat offenders.
If you want to do away with most crimes, then dish out a punishment that the criminals can't live with.

BS and propaganda most of the time, and of no interest to me. :a20:Those sites you list are nothing like here on TOTV where here there is no BS, no propoganda and EVERYTHING is factual. I guess "selective BS" is OK. . :a20:
As for AMAZON, see attached copy of the email I got from Amazon back in Sept 2022. Been trying for 14+ months to get a SINGLE RESPONSE as to what I did wrong. The only response was that email. The account was 23+ years old with rarely any returns. They "stole" over $200 in gift cards on my account, and I have yet to find out after hundreds of emails and multiple phone calls to virtually every department at Amazon I could fine what I had done wrong. The only possibility was I purchased a BEST BUY gift card with my gift card balance, which AT THAT TIME was allowed (but as NOV 1 of this year is not). Funny part was, about 4 weeks later (Dec 2022) I got an email APOLOGIZING for closing my account. They reopened it but 48hrs later it was closed again with the same email and reason.. The least they could have done was give me some sort of "warning" first.
Point I make is (whether you "read those places" or not) there are a huge amount of identical problems detailed out there and getting much worse. The consensus was the online services are run by BOTS and if one gets you for a right (or wrong) reason you're done. I called their "executive offices", wrote to "jeff@amazon.com" probably 50 times. I contacted the CFPB and FTC with no response (yet).
The only reason I found Reddit was because I have been Googling over a year to see what happened to me. If one wants to be blind or ignorant of what is going on beyond TOTV (which is certainly not a bastion of fact) fine, but there are lots of places that exist beyond the TOTV bubble. One needs to use their common sense to determine what's fact or fiction (although admittedly these days that is hard to do) while parsing all the info available out there. BTW, Reddit has lots of interesting boards that individuals set up. Kind of like 1,000,000 TOTV's.
Basically, there are no problems until there is one. I dare anyone to buy an Apple product from AMAZON and try to return it these days. I read the results of that multiple times ON REDDIT.
Fortunately for me I can still use Amazon because for some reason they didn't close my wife's account but I have learned my lesson about them.
Stick with small easy low dollar stuff.

About 5 years ago I remember at Christmas time people were stealing boxes that were left at the door. It never dawned on me a driver would do something like this.
