I am trying to sell a car. I've posted on a few sites. I have an interested person who contacted me via email. They said they are interested and would like to purchase but will not be able to come and see the vehicle and pay cash due to their work schedule, They will pay with a certified bank check and have movers pick it up after the check clears my account.
Is there any possibility that this could be a scam?

It is definitely a scam. The certified check will be counterfeit, but you will not know it until several weeks after you have deposited it into your bank account. Your bank will deposit the money into your account but they will remove the money when they find out that it is counterfeit. You will assume that the check has "cleared" but it has not.

Yes.
Use a 3rd party Escrow company to handle the transaction if there's a lot of money involved.

I don't agree with the KBB section on certified checks, unless the check is issued by a local bank. As I understand it, the typical scammer uses a counterfeit certified check with an out-of-town bank, or a bank that doesn't even exist. Your bank will credit your account, but when they discover that the check is counterfeit, they will debit your account and you will lose your money.

Why can it not be legit?
Payment with a Certified Check is usually very easy to confirm and much different than payment with a "Bank Check". If you'll note the OP's original post, he's not using clear language for what he's been promised.
Depending on what bank issued the check, some "bank checks" are easy to confirm.

This is a well known scam... To sweeten the pot, the scammer will then write a check for MORE than the asking price, telling you to keep some of the money and return the rest "for the inconvenience"... Once they have that money, they disappear...

The key word here is "cleared". Your bank will never clear a check until they have received the money from the bank that issued the check. If the check is counterfeit, that will never happen.

Just to let everyone know, I sent a message back to the "buyer" and said "You can pick up the car when the check clears YOUR bank." I also told them I needed to check with my bank to make sure there weren't any issues.
Shocking, I have not heard back from them!
I knew it smelled like a scam, but the "certified check" comment threw me. I posted here because I knew people would give me good advice! I did plan to go to my bank tomorrow and also ask them about it.
Thanks everyone!

None whatsoever. It is a tried and true scam used all the time. I played along with a scammer one time on Facebook Marketplace and he did send me the certified check. It was an excellent forgery. I emailed him after receiving the check and told him he was a scammer and I had no intention of selling him the item. Guess what? Never heard back from him, no argument, didn't want the certified check back...nothing.

If you do that, you need to get a letter from your bank stating that the check has totally cleared, and not subject to a future account debit. The scammer is depending on you assuming that the check has cleared because the bank has credited your account. Personally, I have never heard of a bank agreeing to provide a letter stating that the check has cleared.

All people and companies selling more than 3 cars in a 12 month period need a Florida Car Dealer License. Additionally, you'll need this license even if you advertise more than three cars for sale.

This is exactly the scam. They send you a check for way over your cars price then ask you to send them a part of the overpayment. The check clears, then its determined to be a counterfeit and you are out the funds. They have no interest in the car, in fact 99.999999% chance they are out of the country.

This may be off point, but I just sold my p/u truck to Carvana (shopped all the online services; they had the best offer…~$700 more; all competitive) and they gave me about $800 less than retail—$15000 for a 2017 Nissan. Didn’t take 48 hours; no hassles; no dealing with public; no listings on sites and YOU KNOW THEIR CHECK IS GOOD. Just a thought.

Yes I think it is a scam for sure. I posted an E bike for sale in classifieds a few days ago & received an extremely suspect message. First of all the person exhibited poor use of English. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that in itself.). Then the person said several times: “LOL” for no apparent reason. Seemed odd the use of that particular phrase, like trying to impress the seller with American usage of slang. Use of punctuation was way off. As we got further into the posting the person asks if I’m. “Really real”. Then immediately says : for me not to worry because he had me checked out. Anyway I became suspicious due to the myriad of mistakes & oddities so I quit replying.

The problem is that the money is in your account. The bank is required to place the money into your account when you present them with a check. However, when the bank discovers that the check is a counterfeit, they can remove the money from your account. The scammer is depending on you to not understand how certified checks are processed. Do not accept a certified check as payment if the check is from an out-of-town bank.

I offered a certified check or a money wire to her account with out seeing title or getting possession of the car . The seller was so wrapped up in her paranoia that she refused both. It works both ways . Paying cash is not a great idea for the buyer as it makes it harder if the seller tries to scam the buyer .

Actually, if you sell cars, becoming a car dealer is not a bad idea. I used to work with a guy who got a dealer license so he could buy cars at the weekly car dealer auctions. He would attend the huge "dealer-only" auctions in Lakeland, Florida. He would buy a late model Cadillac, still under warranty, drive it for a few weeks, and then sell it and make a few thousand dollars on it. But, the guy really loved cars. There are also dealer brokers who will go to the auction and send photos to a client, and buy a specific car for the client. Apparently, thousands of cars are sold at the auction, and most are gone within a few seconds.

They said they are interested and would like to purchase but will not be able to come and see the vehicle and pay cash due to their work schedule, They will pay with a certified bank check and have movers pick it up after the check clears my account.
Is there any possibility that this could be a scam?
Most likely, it is a scam; however, you'll learn very quickly if it is by taking the cashier's check to a local branch of the bank and cashing it.
If it is on a small bank which does not have a local branch, the chance it is a scam becomes more likely. In that case, first call the issuing bank and ask it to confirm the existence of the account on which the check is drawn and that the bank has issued the cashier's check. If there is an account, then take the check to your bank and ask for help in getting it paid. Your bank should be able to arrange for an electronic transfer of the money which will be complete in a matter of minutes. You will have to pay a small fee upwards of $50.
Finally, tell the buyer that you do not want a cashier's check, and, instead, want the transaction done electronically, bank to bank. That may involve a fee around $50 unless the buyer is a good customer of the bank. If there is a fee, tell the buyer to deduct it from the payment.
Simply put, don't turn over the car or the title until you have money in hand and not merely a check.

It is not a cashiers check, it is a certified check. Two different things. A cashiers check is drawn on the issuing bank's funds, but a certified check is drawn on the buyer's account. So, with a certified check, the account owner could possibly remove funds from their account or close the account before the check is cashed. But, more likely, the check will be a complete fraud, a counterfeit check.

Walk away, only deal with a person face to face in a very public area. Do not meet with strangers under any condition.

Yes, its definitely a scam. I went through the exact same scenario a couple of months ago. I had a car for sale and the interested party said they wanted the car for my asking price. They also said they would include the shipping cost for a mover to pick up the car and bring it to them in Ohio. He sent me a cashier's check from Deutsche Bank for two thousand dollars more than my asking price. He then instructed me to deposit the check and let him know when the check clears so that he could arrange for the movers to pick up the car. He said that when the movers arrive to pick up the car i would need to pay the movers at that time with the extra $2,000.00 he included. I told him to just grab a cheap one-way flight from Ohio to Orlando and he could pick the car up himself and drive it back. Get to know the car. He said no, his work schedule would not allow that.
He sent the cashier check via FedEx and I deposited it. The bank didn't put a hold on it. But I was getting suspicious of this whole deal. I went by the bank the next day and asked if the check had cleared yet. The lady at the bank asked why I was asking. I told her the story and she immediately called it scam. She then put me in touch with the bank fraud department and they pulled the check. I then called the scammer and said "the gig is up bubba, this whole deal is fraudulent and I gave the bank your phone number. Hope they come knocking" Then I hung up. Lesson learned on my part, I won't do that again.
I was almost out the car and an extra $2,000.00. Me being Mr. Naive thought the guy really wanted my car and didn't have time to pick it up himself. Glad my sixth sense kicked in.

This TV land. Paranoia capital of the USA.
People are worried about getting scammed on FaceBook for $25, but justify paying $150,000 for their $60,000 pool or brag about their 30% Tips to the "hard working servers" at restaurants.
Tipping someone is getting scammed? :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:
Equating that to thousands of $$$ on a car purchase scam is laughable...

Their response has all the markings of a scam. Don't even response to their email.

I recently sold my car on AutoTrader and got more than I thought I would. The buyer brought sight unseen and had the car shipped to NY. I thought it screamed of scam, but the money went to Aoto Trader and only into my account when I released the car to him. Would do that again!!

Of course it's a scam. Ask yourself, why would someone buy a used car sight unseen and pay extra to have someone come get it. Would you have done that?
I have sold many used cars in my day and as recently as last month. If the buyer does not want to meet with me, check out the vehicle, bring cash, then I will not talk to them.
As a side note, I hate it when people respond to a listing online and their first question is, what is my bottom line. I has no interest in negotiating with someone who has not even seen the item i'm selling.

Sounds shady. IF someone gave me that offer, I would only agree to meet at their bank and have that person give me a check or cash from that bank. Bet the person will not agree to that.

Save some headaches and go to a dealer or CarMax and sell your car out right. I've used CarMax twice and been pleased with the transaction. May not be the best price but no hassle. You walk in with the car. They look it over and offer a price. If you like the price, walk out with a check. Easy!

I once sold a car to Carmax. They gave me a written quote that was good for 7 days. It was more than I expected. I would never try to sell a car to a regular new car dealership.
