View Full Version : Another Golf Cart Goes Ablaze

This fire happened early in the morning at LSL near Panera Bread. The cause of the fire has not been stated.
Update: The cart that went ablaze in Brownwood was a gas cart. After filling up with gas, the owner did not turn the tank cover tightly. Driving to Brownwood, gasoline leaked onto the engine. While parked, it caught on fire. Firemen did their best to quickly douse the flames. The cart, of course, was destroyed.(This is what I have been told. If anyone knows something different, please post. It is important we all remain safe.)

And the point is?The reason for the post is to discuss how carts catch on fire. The one in Brownwood was due to an error the owner made. If the cap was screwed on tightly, the cart would not have caught on fire. I think it is important to send this message: Make sure you secure your tank cap tightly. If it saves only one person, I did a good deed.
I have no idea how the cart in LSL caught on fire. If it was owner error wouldn't you want to know the facts? This way, you can make certain it does not happen to you.

Do I need to know, NO. I could get out of the cart, stumble hit my head cause bleed, and die before bus arrives. So cart fire, or bleed either way pretty rare, or just bad luck

Why are people attacking the OP for posting a relevant story. If a cart fire doesn’t interest you then don’t click the thread. She didn’t post clickbait. I for one think it’s a great reminder. I’ve left my car’s gas cap off by mistake. I could see it happening in the cart. Unfortunately the cart fill nozzle is in the engine compartment.
This post is a good reminder as leaving it off in a cart can have much more serious consequences.
Thanks for posting this.

I've read it was a propane heater left on. There officially has been no cause released.

I tend to believe the propane heater cause. Highly unlikely that enuf has would spill out to reach the exhaust to ignite a fire even if you overfill the tank. All the newer carts have an overflow mechanism that diverts gas to the ground and away from the exhaust.

First of all how do you know the gas cap was NOT tightened enough? The fire would’ve melted the plastic. It could’ve been electrical as well unless there was an expert at the scene on causes of fires there is NO way to tell what caused the fire. I’m just saying it could’ve been ANYTHING and not the gas cap which is a guess.

I'll agree with the poster, why do I need to know?? So let me correct your logic.
1) does it have a direct effect on my life today? no
2) does it have a direct effect or restriction on my life in any way? no
3) is there anything I can do to reverse it? no
4) do NOT need to know.

I too was wondering how gasoline, spilled on the opposite side of the exhaust engine off, could ignite. Very suspicious.

12-13-2023, 09:36 AM
There would have had to be an igniter or spark to start the fire.
The cart was parked and it was cool that morning so I don't believe the gas on exhaust theory.
I think there is more to the story but yeah closing the gas cap is wise.

OP, thank you for posting. Many of us see your post as an excellent reminder that we can never be too careful. Whether the fire was caused by a loose gas cap, a propane heater or something else, I appreciate the "reminder" that we should all be careful and thoughtful, whether we're dealing with a gas cart or an electric cart. Thanks, again and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

The fire department was not able to make a determination. My insurance company did not investigate since it was a small claim and no loss of life and no major property damage. I contacted Yamaha several times and did not receive a call back.
I feel fortunate this did not happen after we came home and parked in the garage. I might not be here today.
My advice would be to install a heat sensor on your garage ceiling. They are under $20 on Amazon. Many of my friends and neighbors have done this.

I am the owner of the gas Yamaha golf car that caught fire in Brownwood on September 30. The gas tank was filled 6 days before this incident and very particular of how I take care of my vehicles. This includes how I secure a gas cap after putting gas in my golf car.
margaretmattson is making false comments spreading rumors and is an idiot for doing so.
Passing along hearsay often gives incorrect information. But in this case it was meant to advise us to be careful and mindful of the things we do that carry some risk.
Margaretmattson meant well and brought the potential dangers of owning/operating a golf cart to TOTV. Thanks Margaret.
As for RobertWR, he claims ownership of said cart, but does not correct any misinformation, leaves us none the wiser and insults the OP. Thanks for nothing, Rob. And a bah humbug to you.

I suspect/guess dead short from wire hot off battery? Original equipment or aftermarket add on? Vibration causes things to shake and let’s face it gas golf cart vibrates like old ringer washing machine. Wise to look for loose wires and wires rubbing against metal. Or it could have just be failure of electrical components wire directly to battery. Really only few things that can cause fire, electrical short or gas fumes ignition? Gas vehicles have been blazing since model T From failures, neglect, and collisions.
As tinker pointed out most Yamaha gas golf carts have over charging problem? A factor or not who knows?

Yes, it was fortunate the cart was not in your garage. Then it would have been a very sad story. Thank goodness you are OK. Enjoy your holiday because you were very lucky. I have a sensor in my garage and now I can say that I'm happy that I have it. Happy New Year.

OP posted that the owner just filled the golf cart, didn’t tighten the gas cap, gas ran onto the engine starting a fire.
Then owner posted that was not what happened, had been 6 days since fill up, and alway checks cap, fire wasn’t investigated, so no official cause of how fire started.
It’s definitely conflicting information, unless OP is talking about a different cart, that was invested and proven as a loose gas cap that caused the fire. Then again, if there is nothing left of the cart, how does one predict cause of fire. Not an adjuster, and have zero knowledge of what would have ignited the fire. Just seems that because gas leaks on the engine there still has to be a spark to cause fire

Thank you for pointing out that gasoline can be dangerous. That does a good service to the community to make and keep people aware of potential danger. People that say, "so what?" just want to PRETEND that gas golf carts are perfectly safe. They don't want to be reminded that their golf cart could catch fire while it is parked in their garage.
Many people also want to believe that gas carts are SAFER than E-carts. And they want to PRETEND that gas carts do not produce pollution. And, of course, many gas golf cart owners WILL NOT make ANY connection to climate change.

And there you have it……the ultimate source for information.I was in Brownwood when the fire occurred. After the firemen left, people were asking if anyone was injured. A shop owner told us everything she witnessed and heard. She was a bit shaken and it is highly unlikely she made the story up,. However, she may have misunderstood what she heard from the firemen on site. This is the reason my post stated if anyone knows anything different, please post. As we all know, an official report of the cause is better than an eyewitness.

Sometimes people get so invested (cash, emotion, investments, pride, etc.) they are blind to anything but their position - such as those blowing the E- trumpet.
By the way, interesting its being hailed now as "Climate Change" instead of the original and temp-charts-contradicting term, "Global Warming."

"now?" The terms have both been used for many years though "climate change" became more prominent about 20 years ago. They are both correct though climate change is a bit more broad.
"temp-charts-contradicting?" Do we really need yet another thread to cover the same, familiar ground?
