"I (the author) left Los Angeles in part to escape the Karens, not invite them to surveil me by golf cart, fine me, and critique my front yard in the newspaper."

Oh boy that's going to hurt.

Other than that snarky comment, not a bad article.

Would have been interesting if he spent some time with Don Wiley.

I'd agree it's fairly even-handed, but its failure to criticize Some Kind of Heaven as a misguided hatchet job was an omission. Also, thanks PugMom for mentioning the Daily Mail article -- I'll see if I can find that.

I’ve grown so tired of the constant hit job articles on the Villages, it is refreshing to finally read something that appears to attempt an objective view without a preconceived agenda. Also, I enjoyed the endless weekend analogy. Thanks for posting the link.

Kinda thought he *did* criticize it. As to the unusual "balance" shown, it does come from a publication called "Reason". 😄

I found it and read it. Then I read through "Some kind of Heaven", where do they find these people to interview. I've been here almost 20 years and never met people like that.

Don’t look to the Daily Mail for truth or fairness or accuracy. I think that’s the rag that trumpeted The Villages falsely as a hotbed of venereal disease because it sold papers.

Not a “snarky comment”…pretty much the truth from our experience the two years we’ve been here. Y’all just can’t leave others be…

THIS!!! We think a like. Whenever I get “so, you know what they do in The Villages? (Wink)”. My answer is “sure, that’s why I moved there “. The look of horror is so worth it 😂

I know! I’ve not heard of the fuzzy dice thing, nor the collar thing. We moved here 3 years ago and a friend in Atlanta promptly sent me the chart about the colored loofas. I try to change mine up regularly just to keep folks on their toes. :a040:

Thanks for the link to TV article. Agree with others that he showed up with an objective attitude and he saw some things to like. He also did some work to attempt to explain some of the governmental structure.....and I admit I'm vague on some of the aspects. What is difficult is for a thirty-something to imagine the wants and needs of a 70-something. Boy, does your outlook change!

Well, my 2 30 something sons, their wives, and my 29 step daughter all plan on living here when they retire. They LOOOVVVVEEEE The villages. I think my youngest son and his wife may like it better than we do. My grandkids too.
The kids are all Millenials, but they hate that title. My youngest is a CPA and will yell at me if I call him that. Sort of like me actually - born in 1963 and I am most Definitely NOT a boomer, I relate very well with Gen X as do all my contemporaries. Someone got that cutoff wrong for sure :)

Article flowed along with information for those that don’t live here might consider doing a drive by.

Our oldest and youngest boys have been visiting for last 6 years. Middle daughter hates all things Florida so boys will be buying her out from whatever homes we still own.

Our grandkids love the small town feel and love the quick drive to parks. Granddaughter, hopes to move into ortho trauma thinking this will be a place to land.

She respects elderly people as does her fiancé, his parents were 47 when he was born. So new gens are already making plans.

Go to city fire or gators dockside after 9 at night. I’m home by 7 so wouldn’t know for sure.

When we decided to make this our extended snowbird roost (mid-September through mid-May) we were pretty sure we wouldn't see much of the grandkids while we were here. I mean, why would they want to come to a place designed for old people.

We have 4 sets of grandkids, and 3 of them have visited. The fourth set have 4 kids, all small, and traveling just isn't much fun for the parents, so they don't go anywhere at all.
Of the 3 sets who have visited, the LOVE it. They can't wait to come back.

It just blows my mind how much young people like a place that was designed for old people. Makes me very happy, though.

Good advertising for the Villages.

I have been here since July of 2005 so must like something about being here. And am always glad to get back.

And I too have met very few ladies named Karen. A lot of Carols and Susans.

Nope not the reason she hates Florida.

Heat and humidity not your friend when you are coping with seizures, diminished sight, from inoperable brain tumor, and death is knocking on your door in your 40s.

So not going to accomplish anything in your post, including not seeing her kids weddings or med school graduations.

I saw Some Kind of Heaven and didn't really take it as "a misguided hatchet job". What I saw was a sad but pretty accurate take on the problems of the elderly in America when it comes to mental health, poverty and becoming widowed. The documentary was shot here, but it could have been shot down the road at the Del Webb community or up the road at On Top of the World or basically any other retirement community in the country. They didn't say that the poor folks portrayed in those scenarios were the typical experience of folks who choose to retire to such communities.

That said, the nearly silent scenes of practice sessions by precision golf cart drivers and synchronize swimmers and such (which also could have been shot anywhere) were creepy as all get-out. They didn't intend to be a "balanced" take on retirement living any more than the ads for The Villages, Del Webb, OTOTW, etc. If you really want "hatchet jobs", check out YouTube for the videos about what supposedly really goes on with those sex-crazed seniors living here! After six years of happily living here with my wife, I'm still looking for those folks! What a laugh!

Surely the important question is

"Why have you NOT got dice dangling in your car?"

Maybe you can pick up a pair of seasonal Christmas ones.

So where do the loofas and dices hang out? I never seem to see them. But the myth continues.

My very well off girlfriend is buying a beautiful house not far from Orlando and I suggested she check out TV. She looked at me horrified, “But, it has such a bad reputation” (she meant sexually). She goes on nice cruises several times a year so I asked her, “Have you met anyone from The Villages on these cruises?” She says she has. And I asked her, “So did they strike you as promiscuous?” She said they seemed like loving couples to her.

So why this myth? It hurts me, it hurts TV. Just because one disgruntled doctor a long time ago said something stupid we now have to live with this curse?
