The credit card surcharge is 3.75 percent. So, with tax, credit card fee, and tip, the soup was about $24.

& before everyone wants to beat up on me for agreeing .. those servers can get a job anywhere they want. There's not a restaurant in the USA, that's not hiring. They can get a job at an honest restaurant, not a restaurant that wants to jack up prices and hide it in a fee.

But you know nowadays they have a tip offering on the register when all you did was buy something! I refuse to tip under those circumstances because they get paid to sell me something. Of course a server gets paid to bring me my food, but if they do something extra, have a smile on their face, or something like that I will tip generously. Unless it’s printed on the bill, I HATE that. Besides, it’s always less than what I would’ve given.

Agree, F.O.S. there is VERY good, but, not that good ! Time to make it at home, there are some FABULOUS on line recipes, butter, caramelized onions, beef broth.. sounds like some high class French cooking but actually not difficult to make VERY VERY good F.O.S. at home... try Julia Child's classic recipe to start with... Make your own large round crouton with a cookie cutter and you can find Gruyere cheese at Aldi ...have fun with the new hobby, we make it at least twice a month. An aside, eating out in the villages is really getting a bit out of hand price wise. Sure, things have really gone up, up, up with the inflation following the Covid pandemic, but $14-$18 cups (and a "cup" is never a full 8 oz ! ), and nearly $15 for a big mac meal deal, home cooking gets better and better, LOL, and that's not inexpensive !

It is getting to a point where cooking at home is the better alternative. It is cheaper, full of quality ingredients, and is much healthier. We make French onion soup, often. We freeze the leftovers to enjoy when we want something fast. Pull out a pot, and give it a try! Your wallet and stomach will thank you.

In their defense I take 3 hours to slowly caramelize my onions to the bronze color of choice. Then add the homemade stock that took 8 hours to give it depth.

Toasting the 1/2” French bread in the oven, then adding copious amounts of Gruyère to insure bread stays crisp, while Gruyère has the almost perfect melt.

Ladle in about 1/4 cup of onions from the pot add stock to the crock. Then gently float the toasted bread returning to oven with extra cheese to get that slightly brown top.

So I get the $18 for French onion soup because I am sure that’s how they prepare it.:clap2: (holding a Sheldon sign)

See Post No. 53. The lady at the restaurant told me that the price is $17. On their website, the front page lists the price as $9, but if you click the download button, it says $15. They really need to make up their mind about the price.

Complaint police? If you are dining out and sitting at a table, you probably want to order something that you normally like. Chicken gumbo isn’t everyone’s bag.

Point being the OP wasn’t dining at a fine bistro in Paris and $18. is a lot of change for broth with onions in it at Palmer. Each to their own but we appreciate the heads up.;)

The prices have been increased in the last month or so. Nothing new here. The prices are ridiculous, and the food is mediocre at best. $70 for a veal chop, with potato and vegetable extra cost items. One of the more expensive restaurants in the villages, and the food is, maybe, a step above diner food. That said, they have some of the best servers in the villages. If you go there, it’s not for the food.

Well just met friends for lunch at Havana. Had their onion gratin soup with 1/2 sandwich. $13.95
Larger than a cup smaller than their usual crock bowl. Which I have had numerous times.
Soup had a piece of bread right out of the package, like wonder bread. With cheese melted. Under the questionable bread was more bread cut up again right out of the bag. Removed the top bread and the half slice of cubes. What was left was 4 pieces of onion and 4 spoons of broth.

This was nothing like they have served in years past. Management noticing the dissected bread on my plate, that I pushed away, Asking if he could remove the entire meal from the table, two managers came to the table apologizing that Bread prep was incorrectly prepared, as was the soup. I opted not to reorder since everyone was finished. I would attribute to busy lunch but inside had 4 tables occupied at 2:30.

Hopefully kitchen just had a bad day. It’s the only restaurant I order onion soup

My bet is he did not. My bet is he thought the soup would be a reasonable price, say $9, and ordered it without looking. That's what I would likely do.

I just looked at six menus around the Villages and six more at Disney World. Other than Palmer's, there was no French Onion Soup priced higher than $9 in the Villages or $14 at Disney (including Chula's and Chefs de France). Why would the OP *not* be surprised at the $18 price?

At a diner for breakfast customer orders today’s special, 2 eggs, 2 bacon, has browns and a biscuit for about $8. Then says put a little gravy on the biscuit. Order comes food is good the the bill arrives with a $2.95 charge for a side order of biscuit and gravy. Gouging is everywhere, and at all price points.

According to their online menu, the soup is made with Gruyere cheese, and the listed price for a bowl is $15.

You must have been hungry.

A bowl is $15 and cup is $8.
They figure you get a bowl, if that’s your meal, you get a cup if its a side - i.e. you order a burger also.

They could have added the credit card fee to the menu, then the bowl of soup is 15.50 and the urges goes from 18 to 18.75. That’s not fair to the cash payers.

Then we have a post about the prices.

Soon we will have posts about the bad service at Palmer’s, because guests are reducing tips by 3.75%.

Actually, the price for the soup is $17. See Post No. 53. Apparently, Palmers does not know how to update their website.

The quality of service should be the same regardless of the tip. The restaurant is responsible for paying their employees a fair wage and for ensuring the service is good. There is no excuse for bad service. Why should customers be responsible for this? No wonder some people, including me, have reduced their restaurant visits.

It wouldn't have been for me- i subtract the 3.75% from the tip

If you subtract the credit card fee from the servers tip you’re hurting the wrong person. They don’t control that charge.

You didn’t know the price before you ordered?
