Let me start by saying we are NOT extremely tech-savvy.

Living in a courtyard villa on a corner with lots of grass presents a need for surveillance cameras. We searched TOTV to see other opinions and recommendations. Wyze, Blink, Arlo, Villages Alarms - all too much to consider.

Looking for recommendations if a.) you live in a corner CYV and added cameras on the wall and b.) if you had a company install cameras that you are happy with.

Thank you

I installed google nest cameras myself. Used a solar cell to power one that isn’t near an outlet. Wireless and works good.

Be careful, I doubt you can install on the wall, I personally have concerns about any wireless cameras as these can be hacked, and now someone can be monitoring YOU. If you go wireless, CHANGE THE PASSWORDS, HIDE YOUR SSID, and keep the outside and any inside cameras on separate networks. I would go with hardwired cameras for on the house or inside the house, and leave the wireless for outside only.
Now having stated all of this I find The Villages to be very safe and really do not think cameras are necessary. We installed a set shortly after we moved here and some neighbors were robbed, and that was 10 years ago, and the last time there was an incident in the area. The cameras are useless.

Thank you all for your responses.

I too think The Villages are very safe and do not require cameras for security. The camera system I was inquiring about is specifically for monitoring the activity of neighbors that leave "gifts" (not the "P" word) on the grass both in front of my house and along the side wall out of site of my front door. 3-5 times per week, every week for the past 5 years. 12 months a year. Not exclusive to snowbirds. Equal opportunity for both permanent residents and snowbirds.

People within this Village have recommended a camera system to identify the gift-givers and address my desire to stop receiving gifts.

I e-mailed the manager of security cameras that works in Districtgov.org asking if there were guidelines or regulations before going forward.

Thank you all again.

Now I understand, I saw (I do not remember where) someone found motion activated sprinklers, end of problem.

I looked at them too (motion activated sprinklers) but I feel that dogs are dogs and they are WELCOME to use my front and side lawns to do what they have to do. Why punish all dogs of responsible owners because of the ignorant and irresponsible ones.

There are also motion detectors that produce a high-pitched tone that is unpleasant to dogs but again, why punish all?

I'm leaning towards identifying and addressing offenders.

I'll see what I hear back from the districtgov manager about being able to mount cameras on the wall.

Thank you.

This is a better response for this kind of thing because if you catch someone on the camera, that won’t tell you who it is.

I live on a corner lot and do want any dogs doing their business on my grass. Even if the owner picks it up there is still residue left that can be stepped in and urinating will kill the grass & plants. Let them do their stuff in their owner's yards...that is being responsible!

Have you looked at wireless nanny cameras? They are tiny and easy to hide. No one will know there is a camera in that area of your yard. You can see the perpetrator on your phone. The cost is under $25.

Once you know who it is, you can confront them. "Hey, while I was walking through the neighborhood, I saw your dog left a mess on my lawn. Can you see that it doesn't happen, again?"

Just a suggestion. Look at the available models and see if any will solve your problem.

I think you should consider the WYZE product line. You can purchase these one at a time and scale up as you are ready to expand. The small cameras are battery operated and depending on events, they can hold a charge for 3 months. You can purchase a package of two small 4x6” solar panels and never need to charge. Both you and wife can monitor on iPhone. I have expanded and added devices one at time and have doorbell camera, door lock, garage controller, and 4 other cameras. My total expense is less than $200. One you purchase first item, they almost annoy you with sales and offers.

if that's all you are looking for, I'd go get the battery operated hunting one because you can strap that to a tree. We used on in my old HOA for that purpose and it worked very well. it records everything no wifi necessary. Battery changed about once every 60 or 90 days.

I use Reolink and Anran 4K cameras with solar panels and memory cards. I ordered both from Amazon. The cost is under $75 and no required subscription fees.. I am a part time resident so I like the ability to keep an eye on both properties for maintenance issues while away.

I live in such a Villa. I had Pike Electric install outdoor outlets in my soffit system. Installed 4 cameras around the house and one inside. I have a pond behind my house so I wanted to make sure I got a view of area behind my fence. Used Google cameras. If a bad guy unplugs they have battery backup good for a week. Pay $100 a year for Google to keep a record of what the camera records for up to 10 weeks. Since my Villa is the first home into our Courtyard, the neighbors appreciate that I see all who come or go. I’ve also noted who cleans up their dogs leave behind’s.

My wife bought blinks, the motion detection doesn't work all the time, I program them to stay on 1 minute, sometimes they do, sometimes not, they shut off even when motion is ongoing. I guess for a cheap unreliable solution they are ok.

Totally agree! As long as the owners pick up after them, they are good to use my lawn. Unless the dog is taking special meds where their "P" causes a lwan to burn, then "P" does not affect the grass. I say that with 2 dogs and having one of the nicest lawns front and back(where my dogs go) in my Village.

It’s not necessarily against burglary. For example, I’m putting up one in the back and front for the grass. I have property management, irrigation, fertilization and mowing companies looking after the lawn while I’m gone. Among the 4 of them I come back to burnt out and a weedy lawn. When I call them and I’m here the lawn is beautiful.

Yet another reason to allow folks to install small fences to prevent the never ending poop issue.

There must be some avenue for external deed restrictions to be amended and allow some type of barrier on your property.

Thank you all for your responses.

I am done.

With regard to suggestions to post a sign, it states in deed restriction:

"Section 4. No sign of any kind shall be displayed to public view on a Homesite".

With regard to Community Standards inquiring about posting security cameras on villa wall. I received this response:

"Thank you for reaching out and checking before you began your project.

You can not install security cameras on the wall, but you can install them on your personal dwelling. As a word of caution, as we do receive complaints from neighbors on occasion, please be mindful of the direction in which you point the cameras."

If anyone needs my address to bring their dog over, please let me know.

Dog urine doesn’t kill the grass. If that were the case I would have no grass in my front yard, but it’s green and luscious . My dog and at least 3 others use it regularly for both needs.

As long as you keep the dogs in your yard I don’t see anyone having a problem. Maybe the neighbor from the smell if too many dogs are using it.

Another possible solution; my friend breeds American Staffs. Let ‘s see which dog will come on his property….

Urine by itself will not kill grass. It is the uric acid in urine that kills grass. However, there are a very few breeds whose urine does not contain uric acid but contains urea instead. Prime example: Dalmatians.

Definitely would NOT consider a WYZE camera. See today's news headline? Wyze Camera Mishap Allows 13,000 Users to See Strangers' Property (https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2024/02/19/security-breach-wyze-camera-mishap-allows-13000-users-see-strangers-property/)

Well, my cameras are looking at the grass and driveway. On Google maps millions of people can see my property from the road. Why would I care if only 13,000 were observing?

Not worth it.
Last summer, I read of 3 different golf carts being stolen right from a person's driveway.
However, for some reason, they let them sit out overnight instead of putting them into their garage.
A heavy personal property loss like that says, stay vigilient and smart.

Maybe just put up a sign politely asking people to look after their pets when they walk by your home would suffice. I would think the vast, vast, vast, majority of Villiagers would comply. I'm not sure what a camera would accomplish.

I agree about the fence, but it wouldn't help this problem. People who do this are just too lazy to pick up after their dogs.

I had this problem with the next door neighbor at my rental, in a CYV neighborhood. The dog had the run of her entire fenced backyard. And yet the lady would bring her dog on a leash every morning to my yard so that she didn't have to clean up after him.

It ended when I installed a game camera and caught her on camera. I didn't even have to confront her. She noticed the camera after the dog did his business and cleaned up the mess before I even had a chance to pick up the camera and see the video.

As for the fencing, I installed a small wrought-iron fence in the corner just outside my lanai for my dog. Yes, it's no doubt illegal. But just like an 8" cross in your yard, it depends on where you live. If you live down South in a new neighborhood with a bunch of recent retirees, some Karen will probably report you because "property values" and "rules are rules". But in the long-established neighborhood where I live, folks would like to keep the friends they've lived next to for years, and couldn't care less about a decorative fence in my back yard that they can't even see. And nobody complains about 8" crosses or even pink flamingos with whirling wings, either.

It's called living in a Friendly Hometown.

I was thinking more on the lines of a 2' white plastic picket style fence just as a small deterrent around the house.

There is nothing wrong or unfriendly about having some fence around your castle. The whole kissing lanai thing is ridiculous.

I still think there is a way with enough community pressure for them to amend the no fence of any type restriction.

I have a CYV with rocks in front which dogs don't seem to like to do their business on.

I actually just have empathy for those who have to deal with this dog crap on a daily basis.

More lazy Seniors should have cats and not dogs. Some of these Seniors with dogs can't even physically bend over to pick up the poop.

Cheers.

I think it is the other way around. ASSUME that you and your dog are not welcome on other people’s property unless told otherwise. That’s what the law does, that is why it is called trespassing. The opposite is like going into a bank and assuming all the money in there is okay for you to use.
