Depositing change into our bank

Back in TN, we were able to take bags of unwrapped change to Bank of America and they would send it through some magic internal process and deposit it into our bank account. The process took a month or so, but was fine because it worked.

I tried this with our local BoA, and they said they don't do this. I have to wrap all the change.

Does anyone know of a way to convert change that doesn't cost $0.07 on the dollar and doesn't require me to spend hours wrapping coins?

I think they have coin machines at some stores, like Publix and others, that will allow you to set up an Amazon account where the coins are converted into a credit to be used on Amazon.com. They don't charge anything for this option.

Dump the coins in and after a few seconds of rattling around the machine issued a ticket, which you took to the counter and either cashed in or deposited. A couple of credit unions did the same thing. Not any more though…now it is rolled coins or nothing. I don’t mind rolling anything from a nickel on up but doing it with pennies is a waste of time. I take ‘em to Wal-Mart sand pay the whatever percent they charge for changing the pennies into paper.

According to my wife, it is all part of a movement toward a cashless society.

There are still quite a few credit unions in TN (Like TVA Employees') that do this. I joined one and park $100 in an account there simply for access to their free CoinStar machine in the lobby and in the unlikely even I will need to take advantage of their low loan rates in the future. All about keeping options open for me. Plus, I can always get the $100 back whenever I want.

The supermarkets in TN charge about 10% for the honor of using their CoinStar machines. No thanks.

Citizens has a change machine in LSL I believe there is no charge for account holders.

It's also my "splurge" money. I wrap it, bring it to Citizen's, they give me bills, and I use the money to splurge on something at Sephora or Ulta.

I have almost totally eliminated my coin accumulation problem. I use a credit card for almost everything I buy, except at sit down restaurants, where I pay cash and never ask for change. I always carry a supply of 20's, 10's, 5's, 2's, and 1's. I order two dollar bills at the bank because that is the only source that I know of.

TD Bank had coin counting machines when we used them up North, I saw they have a branch near or in TV, but I have no idea if they still have the coin counters.

When I go to a grocery or whatever that has a self-checkout, many will accept coins. I put a handfull of coins in my pocket, and if there is not too long a line behind me, I feed the machine. It keeps the coin jar manageable.
OTOH, if you're buying rolls to search for silver or something, good luck.

I have an extra coin counting machine if you want it you’re welcome to it. You put the coins in the top and it sorts them into the individual wrappers for U. Let me know.

Absolutely. Just take your coin to any casino. They will be happy to count it and give you cash back for it. No charge. Unfortunately, I’m not aware of any casino closer to The Villages than Hard Rock in Tampa.

The solution is to spend the coins as you get them. I pay with exact change every time I can. Reminds me of when I was young and most things were bought with change; 5 cent bottle coke, penny candy, etc. You only accumulate change if you don't take a moment to count it out; my wife does even if I'm in a hurry.

Yes, you can Google "coinstar locations"....the machine has some options that do not extract a fee. But even 7% fee is worth not having to waste time counting and wrapping!!

I get those too. Also, some people act like they have never used a credit card machine when it is time to pay.

TD bank had coin counting machines in NJ. They supposedly charged nothing for this service. They had an option for you to guess how much you had accumulated. If you were within a certain amount there would be a prize. That backfired on them
when some people had counted in advance and found that the machine had short changed them. Soon after that the machines disappeared.

Unfortunately TD has taken most if not all of their coin machines out. Claimed there were too many people saying they were inaccurate plus there were some mechanical problems. So now, as others have been saying, it's wrapped or nothing. I have a small craft business so I just keep mine in a bank at home and just replace what I give out in change at the shows. Or give it to my granddaughters for their banks.

TD Bank was sued in a class action because the coin counting machines weren’t accurate. As a result, they removed the free machines.

I never used them for myself but a friend of mine who didn’t have a TD account always asked me to take her coins to the bank and get cash back. As a result, I was a class member.

I figured I might be able to retire early. I got a check for about fifty cents! But the lawyers got paid.

Class action suits. The US has more attorneys per capita than any other industrialized nation. We also have more law suits. So many expressions for this
some not very polite. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Any class action suit. Typical you are told you pay nothing unless they collect. They do not take any case unless they KNOW they will collect. The only question is how much. The atty gets typically 30% plus expenses. A friend used to do photography for attys. Since the client was paying price charged did not matter. Far as plaintiffs, customers who sign up, the more the more profitable. The work? Most if not all is done by a clerk-a secretary.

Usually the machines have a couple of choices. If you want cash back, there is usually a fee of about 7%. But if you are ok with a gift card like Amazon or Starbucks or Home Depot, there is usually no fee!

How do you accumulate all coins? If I buy something with cash I always to enough change so I don’t get change back. That keeps excess to minimum. Course I get lot of rolling eyes, but it takes no longer than paying with credit card.

Mid America banks will count IF YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNT.

Just take your change over and have them deposit it.

One BofA here wanted unrolled coin because they had the machine to count it and send it wherever and then deposit the $$ into the account. But the other BofA needed it rolled. Better than the old days when it had to be rolled with your account number on it!

I live in Chatham over 21 years now. I’m getting my Grandchildren interested in coin collecting. Mostly Cents, Nickles Dimes Etc.
my youngest is 8 and he is very interested in completing his Penny sets.
I’ll gladly help and count any coins (pennys) etc. you might have and give you cash at face value. Please don’t use the COIN STARs at PUBLIX as they charge a fee for dumping coins in their machines. My kids love to hunt for the dates to complete sets. I buy the blank folders and they enjoy filling the spaces.
