All I’ve seen are cover bands in the squares. Perhaps you mean tribute bands that only play songs from a single band?
Anyhow I’d love if the music modernized and added some harder rock now and then. I do hear 80s pop/new wave. But some metal now and then would be nice. I don’t expect to hear Slayer any time soon. But Ozzy, AC/DC, Maiden, that would be fun. It’s time for metal Mondays.

We can only wish!!! lol. They had a Guns N Roses cover band at the strawberry festival that was really good. But unfortunately they won't be in the rotation.
We really need some fresh, newer music in the rotation. Hearing the same bands, play the same crappy, overplayed songs gets stale.
There are a few that at least mix it up, Relic is one of them.
The Villages is slowly trending younger, and I believe there's people that feel like we do. Altough I'm 67.
Afterall, they have 4 venues to fill 365 days a year. That's 1460 dates. Surely they could add some different, newer stuff.
Old music doesn't always mean good music, and not everyone wants to go down memory lane over and over. Hopefully TV entertainment continues to try new things.

Wish they were here. My husband chose “Today” by the Smashing Pumpkins as our wedding song. We interpreted the lyrics probably quite differently than how Billy Corgan probably meant, as he was depressed when he wrote it. I find it interesting how often great art comes out of hurt and pain. Although not exactly the kind of music I listened to (it frightened my young students) I got used to it.

We have been listening to those same tunes in the squares for nearly 20 years! Some of the bands have been around even longer. We go to the squares for a nice walk, chat with friends, watch the sunset, and dinner. We never listen to the music. It is the same ol', same ol', over and over and over! It would be nice if some of the bands learned a new set.

Some bands are ok and there are actully a few, very few, we really like. Some are just plain not good. I guess it's just wishful thinking on my part. lol

I guess it would be fun to have a "Metal Monday". Although my preference for music is now towards smooth jazz or classical. I also like "Soundscapes" (I call it "spa music" :) on cable Music Choice. Not sure if that's included in cable in TV.
Do they have any Bob Marley/Reggae type bands?

I would love it if Dave Grohl decided to move to The Villages. He's probably the nicest, most generous, kind rock stars on the planet, and his infectious potty mouth would give some of the geezers a conniption, which makes me snicker gleefully.

Heck yeah!! Some smooth jazz instrumentals would be great. I’d go so far as to add a Classical night or a Latin night. Maybe provide genre music nights so the heavy metal folks can get their fill while the more conservative music lovers can get theirs as well

Well I hate dance party music as much as they may hate metal. What's fair is fair. :D
There was a band in a square about a year ago that played some Metallica and AC/DC and some grunge also. I recall seeing it on one of the YouTube channels. Someone on here mentioned that they haven't played since. The square was hopping with lots of folks enjoying the music.

There are a few bands that play better rock....Relic is one of those. They are a newcomer to the squares and have several dates planned. Check their schedule on their FB page. Also, if its tribute bands you are looking for check out the schedule at Savannah center. We've heard quite a few good bands there. Not necessarily heavy metal but good classic rock.

It may have been Anti Idol. They were basically the Hooligans under and alias. And yes they rocked the place. It was packed and people were into it. They actually played music from this century. Which is unheard of here. lol

I definitely don’t want to hear any form of metal or rap. Those would drive away a lot of the audience that just wants to relax and enjoy. Of course, what I would prefer to hear would probably drive you away. I’d like to hear the Great American Songbook—Sinatra-type music. Or bluegrass. Or old country with a pedal steel guitar. Or bossa nova. These things are seldom heard in town squares.

Second Sinatra! I was born in the 1960s, but I thoroughly enjoy the standards from the 50s (Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee, etc). I wouldn’t want a steady diet of that music at the squares, but an occasional night of this type of music would be very popular, especially with those who like to dance.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m 57…. A lot of the bands play music before I was even born.
Yes I’d love more metal, The Hooligans is a sad loss from the regular play list. Actually they played on our first night and were part of the reason we moved here!!!!
I also like rap and techno… but I kinda guess the 90’s music that I listened too is a little tooooo progressive… can’t see Snoop Dog, 50 Cent, Eminem and Dr Dray being on any cover bands set list….even though everyone of those musicians is old enough to be a resident….
How about some really good techno… a laser/light show… get down to some acid dancing…. Oh well… seems I will just have to pump up the volume at home and hope my neighbours share my taste in music 😂😂😂😂

Just because you don't like that music doesn't mean they shouldn't play it here. Do you go to every square every night? No. There's room for all genres. If it's not your thing, don't go there.
Music is very subjective, and TV is trending younger. What we're saying is we need more variety. Again, there's 1460 dates open every year. Mixing in some newer music would be nice.
Open your mind, it's healthy.

I think what happens is the businesses pay for the square entertainment. They are interested in making money. So they will get the type of entertainment that will bring in the type of people who will spend money. When I was looking for a house in 2019 all the stores were playing such bad music that I only shopped with ear buds in. There has been great improvement since.

There are only a couple of bands here that play hard rock- Ozzy, AC/DC, etc: Penta, Uncle Bob's Rock Shop, and The Deadlanders. The Deadlanders play a combination of Hard Rock and Hard Country. We never cared much for country but they have a very skilled guitarist who plays blistering guitar on all songs and we love it all. Some other hard rock bands that aren't in the squares are, The Edge Of Rock, and The Howlers. The Howlers play every week at City Fire, and The Edge Of Rock plays in clubs in surrounding towns. Relic is often suggested for hard rock but the night we went it was mostly mellow rock- Stevie Wonder, etc. with a few hard rock songs- Aerosmith, etc.

We got the chance to see Edge of Rock play at a driveway session in Monarch Grove a few weeks ago. They are a very good band and play a good assortment of classic rock. They even played a song by Head East which you almost never hear. They said that they had submitted a video to the powers that be for consideration to start playing the squares. I keep wondering if The Villages will ever tap into the Hard Rock / Metal bands of the 70's and 80's. People my age listened to Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Nazareth, Montrose, Blue Oyster Cult, Uriah Heep, etc. from the 70's then Metallica, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Megadeth, etc. from the 80's. At the squares they wouldn't have to play the hardest songs, but there's also ticketed concerts where a band like this would likely draw a much larger crowd than they expect!

It’s really hard to say. I grew up listening to music in the 70s/80s , and though there was a “subset” that was in to metal music, most were not. Most were into more main-stream and softer rock (Doobie Brothers, Journey, Foreigner, John Cougar, The Police, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, etc), as well as dance/r&b (Michael Jackson, Pointer Sisters, Earth,Wind &Fire, Rick James, Donna Summer, etc) If you research the Billboard singles and radio play charts of the time, you will see the most popular music of this time was more mainstream. Talking to most people born my age (1960s), Metal and Rap are not the genres they listen to now. I’m not saying there is not a group in The Villages that would support a metal band, I just think it would be more “niche” and would not have wide-support to be profitable or in heavy rotation at the squares.

I've always considered myself "a small subset" kind of guy! That said it's interesting listening to the music wafting out of my neighbor's garages and windows and hearing a fair amount of harder rock so I don't feel too terribly alone in my music tastes here. I get no one (or very few) want Hard Rock or Metal blaring out from the squares, but something harder than the music you listed would still be a welcome change. And although everyone loves a Neil Diamond cover band at the Sharon, mixing in something with real amps & guitars would be a welcome change. Not dissing other's tastes in music, just wish mine were catered to a little more often here.

Yup there would definitely be a much larger crowd than they realize. Plus, a good band can pick music from just about all these bands that people could actually dance to, if they were so inclined.
I had plenty of AC/DC at my wedding a couple years ago and our slow dance was to a Metallica song (Nothing Else Matters).
And not to stereotype but people that like music of the metal genre are likely to spend plenty at the bar.

I don’t think you could sign any of those acts to perform at TV....however I could see a Kevin Cronin (REO Speedwagon) or Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers) doing so. I’ve seen both in some really small venues. I know the surviving members of Orleans play small charitable concerts, fairs etc as well.

Nobody is saying get the actual bands here, that's nonsense. We're just saying we'd like to hear bands that play that type of music.
Besides, REO and The Doobie brothers aren't part of that genre at all. We already have plenty of that old crappy stuff. Time for a change once in a while.
At some point the music here is going to have to start trending to newer stuff, as TV gets more younger people moving here that don't dig 60's and 70's music.

I’ve noticed our line dancer can attempt to line dance to absolutely anything.

Yes, because for some it’s just a form of exercising.

The thought of canes and walkers in a mosh pit makes me grin.
As a person who's survived being on the edge of several mosh pits at GWAR, Metallica and others that made me laugh!

I wish I'd been around to attend your wedding, sounds like my kind of affair!

I could not agree more, absolutely right.

I was at Slayer at the Channel in Boston for the South of Heaven tour. The Channel is long gone but was a great club. That was a mosh pit. Luckily back then mosh pits didn’t have the angry punching and kicking that the hardcore shows had. Just bouncing off each other and crowd surfing.
The Villages could add moshing and sell hip replacements in the square next to the bar hut.

At the GWAR concert I attended with my son and some of his high school buddies they got the bright idea to stand directly in front of the band. Anyone who's been to a GWAR concert knows the band sprays the crowd with green and red 'goo' and we got soaked. The small fence they put up in front of the band was flimsy and would tip over if leaned against so when the mosh pit formed directly behind us I played offensive lineman and kept all the mayhem from getting to them on the front row. One idiot crowd surfing back to front kicked me in the back of the head twice and after the second time he got planted into the floor, only surf front to back! My son decided he was ready to leave a little early so the next day he heard from every one of his friends that they got hammered after I left and was no longer shielding them! Fun times.

Fun fact; Maria Menounos and her parents used to clean The Channel in Boston. Great club

My son liked GWAR. I'm very open minded, and I tried to give it them a listen, but I couldn't handle that. Just a bit to hardcore for me. LOL

I think that there is a vast difference between the deep, powerful, 3 dimensional, large range sound of metal (you need the right sound system at home to capture it) and the angry, destructive, unhappy punkish style music. Or the jack-hammer effect of some rap. I like most genres but selectively.

These things are seldom heard in town squares.
i like most kinds of music, & yes, i love metal, but i also like Sinatra, too. even Dean Martin & Julie Andrews. i'd go for the GreatAmericanSongbook, thx for posting

Got to see Sinatra in ‘87 at a benefit concert at Boston Symphony Hall just a few yrs after high school. Parents dragged me there....tickets were like $100. I was in awe leaving there. I check all the boxes of genres myself...kind of an ADHD of music, but that guy was a performer. Thanks for bringing up his name.

Had to get used to it - when my daughter was 17 she was lead in a death metal band and I did not want to lose her. Those “singers” ie. screamers wreck their voices in a couple of years. Daughter has matured and now plays Mozart on her key board. Still loves metal though.
