I am having increased knee pain recently and I am looking for information on any pain medications (cremes) that can be applied to the knees to relieve the pain. I am sure this is muscular pain, and some of the OTC cremes do seem to offer some relief.
So if you found one that worked well that is what I am looking for, I will be going back to my doctor in a few weeks, so I do not need a doctor referral UNLESS this would be required for a specific creme (CBD based?)
Thank you for any information.

I can only attest to its efficacy relieving some of my occasional pains. I understand it may not be a particularly healthy option, but that's well beyond my expertise. At my age, I'll take efficacy over long term health benefits, anytime.

What I recommended above, is "generic" Voltaren from Amazon. I've found it equal to the brand name, but that's just me.

I have knee and lower back pain. Tiger balm and magnesium lotion has helped a lot. I use "Life-Flo" brand and buy it on Amazon.

Some of it is arthritis for me... so apple cider vinegar (in ice water) and avoiding gluten really helps!

This inexpensive creme from Walmart is basically Voltaren mixed with Tiger Balm (an anti-inflamatory plus camphor and menthol). It works well for minor muscle and joint pain. Ice helps a lot always. If I have to, ibuprofen for when it's bad.

I have tried Voltaren in the past and it did not seem to work. Perform gel does provide some relief, and I had used Tiger balm on occasion (completely forgot about it) and will try that again. Also, tried BluEmu with some relief.
I have heard that some of the CBD(?) based products work, but have no idea of getting or using these.
I appreciate the replies so far.

Have you tried wrapping? The kind weight lifters use in the gym. Or taping, like NFL athletes use.

Orange BlossomBaby may know something about CBD I think.

Heat from heating pad followed by ice from cooled knee pad can help too. 20 min each.

If it is sore muscles, a massager like Theragun under knee or on muscles, not on bone, using soft option, might help. Theragun is great for sore muscles anywhere. Especially if your wife applies it to your back. Mmmm.

I have tried just about every product available for joint arthritis pain. The creams that seem to work for me are icy hot, tiger balm, and arnica cream or gel. I also find that CBD works for me, but it doesn’t work for everyone. I don’t use CBD cream, I take a daily CBD gummy that has no THC and can be purchased online. If you try CBD, be sure it comes from a reputable company whose products are tested by an independent lab (I use a company called Green Roads). Best of luck.

For straight muscle pain, I have always found relief in ice, and heat treatment.
Arthritic pain just heat, and any painkiller that works when too painful.
You may find an elasticated knee brace may help.

My wife tried a CBD based product from the Pharm Stand for wrist pain. They’re in Brownwood and no doctor or prescription is needed. One drawback is it’s kind of expensive

After a lifetime of jogging, running (40 miles per week), training for and running a marathon, and daily long-walks (when I couldn't run anymore) and two knee operations (meniscus repair), numerous cortizone injections (that usually lasted until I got home from the doctor's office), Blue EMU, Voltaren, Bio Freeze, and other topical oinments, as well as acquiring an impressive collection of knee braces/wraps my orthopedic surgeon suggested viscosupplementation (an injection of collagen extracted from the comb of roosters). The first round of injections lasted about six months and, so far, the second round has lasted over 4 years. It is covered by most insurance programs (including Medicare) and provides inflamation relief.

If you think it’s not structural (i.e. knee replacement); then I would recommend stretching.

Yoga is a good option. OR

In Pinellas and Trailwinds (on 466A) there is a Stretch Zone and a Stretch Lab; professional stretching.
They’ve cured me of many ailments caused by tight muscles.
I prefer Stretch Zone (in pinellas).

Knee pain, joint pain, tendinitis, fasciitis are all inflammation in the body. The most natural way to get rid of all aches and pains is to change your diet. Eliminate all grains ( wheat & white flour, rice, barley, corn). Eliminate white sugar and all processed foods. Check out books like WheatBelly by Dr William Davis. Grain Brain by Dr David Perlmutter. Your health will be so much better.

My daughter is an MD. Recommends Voltaren. Not all creams work for everyone. May need to try more than one.
I still play baseball (not softball). Oddly, I have found that “horse liniment” works for my shoulder and knees. Recommended by my fam doc. Find it on Amazon. Called Absorbine Veterinary Gel. Orange label. My cousin in the horse biz also recommended it. Smells minty, dries quickly. Good luck!

Are you certain your pain is only muscular? Many years ago I began having knee pain. What I am going to say I know is not what you asked for, BUT, a friend in the medical field told me I should take Glucosamine (1500 mg) / Chondroitin (1200mg) with, and this is a must, MSM included. I have been taking this for about 15 years now . I am active, playing tennis, etc. and have little to no knee pain. I have found that creams, balms, etc. do not work for me. Probably our conditions differ. For whatever it is worth, and I wish you well.

I am a nurse, so here is what I know, heat for muscle pain, ice for joint (inflammation) pain. Ice can be applied for as long as you want, heat 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off is the rule. Voltaren ( generic is Diclofenac & can be bought everywhere, but cheapest is Walmart’s brand) is an anti-inflammatory medication. This is the topical version of Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen meds. This definitely helps if inflammation is the problem. However, most people don’t read the instructions & don’t use enough & rub it in per the instructions. The trick is everyone reacts to topicals differently so it may or may not work for each individual. That being said, joint pain is tough but the rule of thumb in the medical community is ICE…Ice, Compression, Elevation. Good luck. This getting old sucks. 😉

I successfully use DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) for most issues. It's a natural product, and before using it, I highly recommend reading a little booklet: "Healing with DMSO" by Amandha Vollmer. Both are available on Amazon.

DMSO is derived from wood and is a by-product of paper making. It is a powerful free radical scavenger and an effective anti-inflammatory agent. It also has pain-relieving, collagen-softening, and anti-inflammatory characteristics, making it an incredibly effective natural pain reliever. Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) is a colorless and transparent fluid that must be diluted before use.

Regarding CBD, I go to the "Pharm Stand" in Brownwood. I call it the CBD pharmacy. You can ask them questions, and it's a reputable company that I trust.

Good luck!

I know you're asking about topical applications, but for me it's all about daily stretching of the thigh muscles to keep knee pain at bay. Picking up the foot and gently reaching your heel towards your buttock and holding for a minute until the stretched feeling subsides. If it doesn't feel better in a minute try again with less stretch tension. I wish you well Tinker.

Before self-medicating your self-diagnosis, see an orthopedic (knee) specialist. Osteoarthritis is a common cause of knee joint pain in seniors, which will feel like it is muscular. Another cause could actually be in the hips and not the knees. All it takes is an x-ray. I would recommend seeing Optimotion Orthopaedics (https://www.optimotion.com/). They have an office conveniently located on Rt 44E near Brownwood. If osteoarthritis is your problem, then there are various treatments available.

I had both knees replaced in 2022 after probably 5 years of pain and some loss of motion. Zero pain since then. Yes, I tried chondroitin, etc. first. Results vary depending on fitness and rehab. I returned to full athletic activity 6 weeks after each replacement. Age 70. Fit. Played two hours of pickleball each day for four months before the first replacement.

Hi! I had an issue with knee pain. I saw a Physical Therapist who diagnosed my issue as weakness in my hips and prescribed exercises to strengthen my hips. Many times knee pain is a symptom of an issue, as opposed to the source of the issue. My knee issue stopped me from running. I am pretty vigilant about hip exercises and am now back to running. It’s my hope this is helpful.

The stretching advice above is also excellent. Stretching also strengthens. Best to try to go after the cause first.

Try across the counter glucosamine chondroitin!

It gave me 10 years pain free before I had to undergo a knee replacement. You have to take it daily for 3 months before you notice any real difference. My Physical Therapist told me it would give me 5-10 years before needing surgery. She was right. I hear from some it does not work. For the majority it does work.

I had a friend with terrible knee pain, but it was osteoarthritis. They used a CBD capsule with turmeric (the turmeric reduces inflammation) & reported great reduction in pain. I have been looking at the company that supplied the product & I no longer see the one with turmeric. But that could be easily remedied at home, use both CBD & turmeric capsules. Use some black pepper with the turmeric as it increases bioavailability. Usually turmeric caps with black pepper included, are more expensive & they say contains 'bioperine' - just a fancy name for the ground black pepper in your kitchen. Since you should eat something with fat in it for the turmeric absorption, just sprinkle pepper on it.
Good luck

Tinker, I've had increased knee pain recently, making walking very, very difficult. I picked up some CBD 'salve' 1000 mg and it worked perfectly within 15 minutes. KMRELIEF.COM
YOU can access it directly from the company, legally. KM Salve.

But, I have found it to work, but it doesn't last.

So I went to the Ortho Institute to determine what I had done to my poor knee!

I was shocked to hear that it was arthritis, bone on bone, and TKR is definitely in my future.

They gave me the option of cortesone shot. Nope! I did not take them up on it, as I didn't want steroids in my body.
A month passed and I called them back and scheduled for a cortesone shot. WOW!

It worked miracles from June -January, when I just got another.
Best wishes Tinker

For my knee pain, my best relief is strengthening the other leg muscles. They take over the wear you put on your knees. A few times at a rehab and they’ll give you a set of the best excercises for your needs.

This inexpensive creme from Walmart is basically Voltaren mixed with Tiger Balm (an anti-inflamatory plus camphor and menthol). It works well for minor muscle and joint pain. Ice helps a lot always. If I have to, ibuprofen for when it's bad.

pain creme (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Ultra-Strength-Pain-Relief-Cream-4-oz/10324625) There is no Voltarin in this stuff. It is Ben Gay stuff!

Voltaren cream. Used to be prescription only. Now available OTC. We get ours at Costco.

I recently was denied a claim for Diclofenac Sodium 1% cream due to it being OTC drug, but they ran it again and for some reason it cleared. $0 cost through a Medicare Advantage plan in NC.
Every state seems to be different.

Votaren has worked for me, The Dr. also has prescribed it in pill form for shoulder injury. I use it dabut I get thru my Dr ily on my knees, one is store bought and the other original equipment. The literature with Voltaren say it takes 7 days for it to work, then use daily. About $36 at Sams, but I now get it prescribed. My Uncle Ben's CDB also works, but the script is more cost effective for me.

WOW, I want to thank all of you for the information, for those of you that asked, yes I have a knee doctor and will be seeing him in the next couple of months. No bone on bone per the last exam, I have also been experimenting with heat and the hot tub and this appears to be lessening the pain. I will be trying some of the other suggestions, great info.

Good luck!

Yes, the horse gel was recommended by a masseuse and I ordered more because I ran out of It on Amazon. It does work. It shows an Arabian horse on the front smiling.

I had good luck after knee surgery with a customized pain creme called Pensaid. This comes from a compound pharmacist and requires a prescription. Do you know just about anything you take by mouth can be made into a creme by a compound pharmacist?

While the creme works great for pain it is only temporary. I ended up getting 4 injections of stem cells directly into my knee joint s where it was hurting and it hurts no more!

The trick is everyone reacts to topicals differently so it may or may not work for each individual. There is no Voltarin in this stuff. It is Ben Gay stuff!

Voltaren is a topical NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug).
Methyl salicylate is also a topical NSAID. They are similar.

BenGay, IcyHot, BioFreeze are all menthol + camphor.

The product I recommended has both, which I mentioned in the post. RIF

You can try Voltaren(R) (generic name diclofenac). It is a cream, formerly prescription only, now OTC. It is an NSAID class (like aspirin, Motrin, etc.) and is absorbable through the skin for local pain relief.

Absorbine Jr. has worked for me. Plus I use knee braces when I play sports. Lot's of people with knee problems are over-weight. Not everyone, of course. But, if you are, losing weight would help.

OP, this does work. My husband had severe hip pain about 20ish years ago. Whenever we walked in an area that was cemented (big department stores, etc.) I could hear the change in his walking, his foot would thud and I knew it was time to leave. He started taking Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM. It took a while took work but eventually the pain went away completely. Before taking this the pain had lasted close to a year.

Not to compare you to a dog but my old hair dresser where we used to live had a dog (large breed 150 lbs. or so.) The dog had arthritis when it was 8 years old. The dog was no longer enjoying life at all. He was limping and didn't play anymore, didn't go for regular walks. My hair dresser started giving Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM and began moving a LOT better. He was back to himself again. After a couple years the hairdresser thought the dog was better and stopped giving him Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM. Within a week the dog was back to limping again. So he began giving it to his dog again and the dog lived to be 15 which is very rare for such a large breed dog.

I once injured my shoulder and a neighbor had me try tiger palm. It worked great.

Good luck!

DMSO works best of all that my husband and I have tried. But do read up on it first. A couple important things to know if you do go this route 1) apply it with your hand or organic cotton balls. DMSO picks up whatever is on your skin. Make sure your skin is clean and chemical free before applying. If 30 minutes go by and you still feel pain apply again. I've never had to do it beyond the 30 minutes but have done it later in the day or the next day. Eventually the pain will subside completely, or it has for us. 2) Get it in a glass container not plastic. It's available on Amazon. 3) One downside to this is you can smell like garlic after applying it. I think the odor is better or worse depending on where it is applied.

I believe this is the best advice, especially for long term overall health. Plus eat organically as much as possible. I started doing this last March (plus dramatically reduced carbs, especially processed carbs.) Within one week I felt so much better overall. My energy level in a matter of days was dramatically better. I needed to lose weight but this isn't why I started doing this. I did it to feel better and to be healthier. But the weight melted off. I would barely replace the clothes I had grown and would go down another size. I never weighed myself before I started but have always been excellent about knowing my weight within 2 lbs. even without a scale. I've lost 40 lbs and it's been easy to keep it off.

Arnica oil. It’s a botanical anti inflammatory and analgesic. For me, it’s been magical. It’s not an instant fix. Takes a couple of days. Use it religiously and in about a month you will really feel the difference. Some people combine it with CBD oil. You do not need a prescription either. I get it through Amazon.

Please consider an orthopedic doctor for an opinion after an x ray and or MRI. Topical creams otc cannot go deep into the skin . FDA regulates the prescription ones that offer deeper penetration. Once you get some pics and a physical evaluation you might get some exercises to do at home and maybe a script or shot. These exercises do work if used properly. Cortisone and Ketoloroc injections are helpful also. And go easy on knees , it takes longer for us to heal. best of luck.

Yes! Right after Christmas I went completely gluten free and I feel SO much better.

I had been "cheating" and consuming gluten occasionally before the holidays but couldn't resist stuffing, gravy, etc. My arthritis got so bad I was afraid to get out of bed being so achy with the pain. Then remembered reading about gluten and arthritis pain and knew I had to make a change.

Adding 2 TBS of apple cider vinegar to a pint of water each day has helped me too.

GL everyone and hope we all are feeling better soon. There is some great advice/suggestions here.
