My wife and I are arriving in a few days to close on our new home (!!!), only as snowflakes for a short while . This is quite a short visit and we're not setting up any live TV for it, just streaming (Roku device); none of our subscriptions include live TV. She looked around for any Villages-sponsored or -related Oscar events and didn't see any listed -- is anyone aware of anything happening? Thanks.

You will find that most people here, including myself, have no interest in watching a bunch of pompous elitists give each other awards.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the Academy awards. I find lately it has nothing to do with talent. A true disappointment.

If you haven't already, one of your first tasks will be to set up internet access for your new house. You might have Xfinity.

Ideally, someone who is watching the Oscars will invite you over after seeing this post, & or let us know of any Oscar events.

Otherwise, this link provides the answer to how to watch this year's Oscars:
Access Denied (https://www.oscars.org/how-to-watch/)

It says it is free over the air, so perhaps one of those antennas? Not the elaborate kind, just the kind you can put on a tabletop. Maybe some living in the area will chime in if ABC comes in with good reception over the air, or we're back to Xfinity. The link also mentions a few streaming sites.

You also need a television, or a couple of tablets, or phones.

Good Luck!

As usual the "Access Denied" still links to the appropriate site. So go ahead & click it anyway, if you are interested.

Since we have not gone to a movie in 8 years and never plan to go to a theatre again, we don't care about the current movies.

Ever since that wretched movie La La Land won an oscar, we don't care what any critics think.

At the present, we are very happy watching Blue Bloods and Castle re-runs and we are recording other TV shows we like. Life is very good for us.

Original poster here: I get that many don't care about the Oscars or go see movies with too many messages (Dune is the type of movie I'll go to ), but it's been a tradition in the family for decades to watch and "bet" on the outcome (movie candy prize), and my wife wants to keep that going with the adult kids, even if we're not around; they like the tradition as well.

We will be setting up internet for streaming TV the day we arrive but do not plan to have a subscription/app/cable with live TV, hence the inquiry.

Thanks anyway for the responses.

If you plan to be a snowflake, get YouTube TV. You can watch live TV from home or your new place in TV.

I did not see any “movie clubs” in the villages (I only did a quick search).
But previous post is correct, you won’t find anything for an event that starts after 9PM

If you don’t find an Oscar’s party you can take advantage of a 1 week free trial offered by HULU, or YouTube TV. You can also download ABC to your TV.

The last good movie I saw was Sound of Freedom which Hollyweird tried to stop from being released.

Imagine trying to stop the release of a movie bringing awareness to human smuggling for sex.

I’ll be interested to see how low the viewership ratings are this year or how many diversity awards they give out.

This has been an amusing time, and I can appreciate the various views; I love movies and wish the Oscars hadn't become so politicized. I did laugh at the comments about the ceremony starting after 9:00, and thought some might find it interesting that it's now starting at 4:00 West Coast time (I guess the East Coast dropped the hammer on the producers).

Anyway, particular thanks to Jann Carl for the kind offer to accommodate my wife, however, she'd found someone with whom to watch before I saw the message this morning.

When I was a child, I was allowed to stay up late and watch the Oscars with my family. I continued the tradition with my 3 kids. We saw most of the movies in the weeks before the event. We enjoyed watching the awards together and all the process They are now adults and live apart but we keep the tradition and call each other during the awards.

When I hear "Oscar" I think of Oscar Madison. I googled "Oscar" and discovered the show is now called The Oscars as shorthand for The Academy Awards. The last time I watched any of it was when Patty Duke muddled her acceptance speech in 1970. I quit watching all but a very few new movies years ago as they misportrayed reality to such an extent that I found it upsetting, especially when I realized I was paying to watch such trash.

I believe it started a long time ago when Vanessa Redgrave went on and on about the situation in palestine in a very long and slanted diatribe. They let her go on and on and nobody apologized for letting her do this. Since than I have had zero interest in the views of any actor or so called celebrity.

The Oscar trophy is a model of a Crusader holding his huge sword. Crusaders fought wars against Muslims all over the Middle East. I find it strange that the woke Hollywood society uses this as their highest form of award.

So glad your wife found someone to watch the show with. And sorry that you received some snarky replies, which did not address your question.

I try to stay up to watch the In Memoriam segment but don’t always make it. With the earlier start time, perhaps I will this year.

Frankly, if someone simply asks for information about an event that interests them, comments about how much you dislike that event doesn't really further the conversation. I actually agree the Oscars are pretty much worthless, but was trying to accommodate my wife (who wants to continue the tradition of the family doing something together), by seeing if there is anything organized for the event. It's actually a bit surprising how the "World's Friendliest Hometown" responded in some cases.

The “World’s Friendliest Hometown” is friendly. Most of the people here are. When you are in trouble, see how people come to your aid. But that does not mean that they are push overs, or don’t have opinions, or will put up with just about anything. That would be doormats…. not friendliness.

It's amazing how often when someone disagrees or gets offended with some opinions they pull out the "world's friendliest hometown” card.

You must have known bringing up a polarizing awards show was going to lead to some opinions.

Enjoy your Oscars.

I’m sorry you found out the hard way that America’s friendliest hometown isn’t represented here on TOTV with the exception of a few very kind and helpful people. I did not watch, used to many years ago, then got fed up with the continual yapping. BUT I do like to see the clothes they are all wearing and found a site online that had the clothing for both men and women. Have to say this is the ugliest bunch of dresses I have seen in a long time, and all (make that most) of the very young men looked very effeminate - maybe this is the fashion nowadays.

POOR THINGS

THE ZONE OF INTEREST
After paying $20 for Oppenheimer, I still haven't finished watching it. The first half was so boring that I fell asleep and I have
not gotten around to watching the rest of it.

Tustin714, How did your new antenna work? Were you able to watch the Oscars? Was it a table top model?

So it was scheduled for delivery "up until 9pm" :) but arrived mid-afternoon -- it was not table top but the type with a large square receiver you can put in the window, or rest on the back of a couch. Anyway, it only drew in 5 channels (only Fox was a major channel), even though we tried it at both ends of the home (north and south) and facing east and west, to catch Orlando or northern transmitters. No luck.

So my wife started watching the Oscars unlocked channel by ABC, before I left to play trivia. When I returned she said the channel had shut off as the show started, so she let the internet keep her up date to date as she texted with the kids (all of whom filled out ballots in the attempt to win the traditional box of Raisinets :)).

In the end, our son who is traveling in Spain won, even though he was asleep during the show! Meanwhile, I recovered $3 of my $5 trivia fee (tied for 1st place, incredibly, until the last question), so that beat the Oscars! :)

Thanks for the update. Was wondering how you guys fared. If you guys are here in TV next year at the same time you might try to see if any neighbor’s are planning to watch and then ask if you can come over and bring something food or drinks, appetizers are always welcome. The neighborhood pool is a good place to start the conversation about any show. Anyways, that’s what I’d do.

The parody on the streaker event was so damn funny. John Cena is some great eye candy! THAT was the best part of the show.

The only other thing that gained my interest were the clips from Poor Things. I will plan to see that movie...

And those are great ideas, so thanks.

I'd rather watch nose hair trimming.

I'm having a little trouble getting my trifocals to focus on the mirror these days so I'm in need of some assistance if you're offering :)
