It's a tossup between Aldi & Trader Joe's in which company has the most food items recalled. Low prices and a free dose of salmonella; what a deal! No thanks!

Publix foods has given us salmonella on occasion. Watch out for their produce. I can’t tell you how many times we have bought there only to discover later the food item was close to expiration or expired. We try to check all the time, but things just slip through. I’m sure it may have happened at ALDIs as well as other stores too.

We look forward to the new ALDIs at Sumter Landing.

I hope one of the 'significant number' of Winn-Dixie's becoming Aldis will be the one in Pinellas Plaza. That was the 'new section', not long ago & is golf cart accessible.

Don't know why they would turn that WD in an Aldis when there is an existing Aldis practically across the street.

In the main, the Aldi deriders are usually Publix (in UK. Waitrose) snobs, who think paying more for the same item is a rise in their social standing.
We have used Aldi for years without a problem, and are a lot wealthier for it.
Their Customer services, if needed, are second to none.
We only use other supermarkets to top up with any line Aldi do not carry.
So there!:girlneener:

Incorrect. This is a common myth. The owners of the two chains are related (cousins I believe) but the companies have always been separate.

Article explaining the connection between Trader Joe's and Aldi.

Trader Joe's is a owned by German chain Aldi Nord and Aldi is owned by Aldi Süd. They are separate companies originally owned by two brothers - Karl and Theo Albrecht.

No they are not. Same family... totally different companies (Aldi North and Aldi South in Europe, Trader Joes was bought by Aldi Nord. Still run independently from Aldi Nord. Split was due to selling cigarettes long ago.

For those who are stunned to learn Trader Joe's isn't just an Aldi subsidiary but that there are two Aldis, let's take a step back. CNBC explains Aldi was originally founded as a suburban German corner store which brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht inherited after World War II. In the economic turmoil of post-war Germany, the brothers worked to cut down waste by only selling staples at low prices and were quickly able to expand their store into a chain. By 1955 they had 100 stores, but in the 1960s, the brothers split the business into two (Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd) after disagreeing about selling cigarettes.

Salmonella normally is a supplier issue (contaminated field, production machinery) in grocery stores or from the users kitchen (getting raw chicken or meat on uncooked items), not the store or chain. Most Aldi or Trader Joes items are supplied by the exact same suppliers WD, Publix and others use. They may be a different quality spec but same plants. Produce is regional so an Aldi in the north is not getting the same spinach (same exact bag, not same spinach inside) as a Florida Aldi store.

Aldi will start with 50 WD stores to be remodeled this summer and reopened in 2025 as Aldi's. Locations have not been identified. They likely will split the store in half and lease the other side vs. filling current footprint when they do remodel (they have no need for bakery behind glass area, Deli service areas, meat dept. cutting area or full refrigerated produce sections). Some stores will remain WD's and be run under that banner. Anyone saying anything else is guessing, even WD store employees. In the business. Aldi has not said anything about their plans outside of the first 50 stores.

While the two brands coexist regionally in Germany — divided between the north (Nord) and south (Süd) — they split the rest of continental Europe into territories. According to Brilliant Maps, Aldi Nord operates in France, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Poland, Luxembourg, and Portugal, while Aldi Süd services the United Kingdom, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Slovenia, and Italy, as well as Australia. Aldi Süd expanded into the U.S. in 1976, just three years before Aldi Nord bought Trader Joe's, making the U.S. the only country besides Germany where both brands operate.

Unfortunately most people don’t pay attention to or are oblivious to recalls. Sure grocers PR machines reach out to media outlets when it’s known that a certain lot has been deemed contaminated.....but much like auto manufacturers, unless you get the postcard or an email, most never even know about them. In fairness, every grocer chain gets stung once in awhile by a recall.....romaine lettuce always seems to rear its ugly self annually

Brothers. They used to be in business together, but had a disagreement over selling cigarettes and went their separate ways.

Now one has Aldis and the other has Trader Joes. So not the same ownership anymore, but same family.

Wrong on so many levels.

-The Aldi on 466A is the same size as most all of the Aldi stores, and that is by design.

-Inaccessible? It's much easier to get into that Aldi than the WInn-Dixie across the street, unless you are referring to via golf cart. The parking lot is also easier to navigate.

-They can both stay in business simultaneously as long as the WD remains a WD. They cater to different crowds.

I’ve been to one up north. Their model in that store is one manager, one cashier and one general worker so essentially minimal staffing. That’s why prices are so good but you’re correct, they all have similar footprint.

Wow ! Had no idea, thought T. J.'s won that contest a long ago. Most of the peanut butter, ground beef, snack dips, apple juices, lunch meats, etc. etc. recalled seem to be brands OTHER than the ones Aldi carries, but thankfully, you have a lot of choices here, so can avoid Aldi. I find their produce surpasses even the farmer's markets in the area, and the USA raised and slaughtered meat attracts us, but to each their own, we all deserve choices !

Agree ! Do you think the poster may have meant the one on 441, it's small, a bit darker, not quite like the big, bright, large one in Oxford and on 466A. I doubt the 466 at 301 would ever think about closing with the numbers of huge housing and apartment complexes being built there ! But, I don't attend their board meetings...LOL.. so who knows !

Probably has more to do with choosing well-known chains than finding low-cost chains. The Aldi's price was $43, Publix was $70, and Sam's was $106. Publix isn't low cost but is certainly well known. Sam's, with bulk sizes, isn't really a good comparison - while price per pound is probably less than at other stores, I don't need that much peanut butter.

Shop TJ’s twice a month, according to manager in Gainesville, they get a good percentage of TV residents. Which request, and sometimes pleading please come near us.

My grocery list has price comparison when I add an item, for Kroger, WF, Sprout's, Fresh Market, WD, TJ’s and Aldi.

Rarely does Aldi or Whole Foods come up as a better prices, sometimes equal but rarely less.

I only buy two things at Publix thin slice Italian bread and Boars Head Turkey. So not on my app, but for us no one has whole grain bread or scones as good as TJ’s.

For us it’s close to an hour to northern TV,depending on time of day, and Gainesville on I-75 is 53 minutes and Clermont Costco on turnpike is 36 minutes. However takes 10 minutes to find a spot to park at Costco

I get what A3 is saying mid day traffic heading north is unbelievable. lawn services people driving right lane at 21mph and don't forget stop at every roundabout just in case. We live south of 44 and traffic on Morse to TV hospital took 69 minutes last Wednesday then 14 minutes to finds a parking spot. I can cut that time in half if I go at 6am, but nobody wants to set appointments for that time.

I go to Malcolm Randall twice a month, 2 miles to 301 to turnpike to 75. At MR in 53 minutes still 15 minutes to find a parking spot. If I keep up with traffic its less but sometimes 80 can be little interesting. Then again just one accident you can sit in I75 free parking lot for an hour.

Normal everyday food, that I grew up with. Our beef, chicken is raised on family farm, so rarely do we buy at any grocery. Although some aldi meat prices are in the same range at other grocery on sale. Salmon is shipped from Alaska as a gift during season.Grown herbs, container veggies, except for tomatoes that are a fail here. So we can at the farm

Non pasteurize milk
Brown eggs
almond flour
artisan lettuce.
Staples made without nitrates and phosphate.
No additives or preservatives.
Kosher.

So normal groceries that Aldi, WD, and Publix either doesn’t have or prices are outrageous
