Akin to my ketchup thread, it is time to seriously discuss frankfurters…aka hot dogs, weiners etc.

There is absolutely no frank other than Nathans in Coney Island, Brooklyn that is worth eating. All others are ground pulp compared to Nathans.
After all, the famous hot dog eating contest is at Nathans!
Nothing better than standing out on surf avenue in coney island enjoying the only true American Hot Dog.

Now before you people from chicago chime in. Chicago style hot dogs are an disaster to the culinary world..who can taste the meat with a kitchen sink piled on it.

And lets not discuss something MidWesterners call “Coney Sauce”….there is no Coney Sauce in Coney Island

And lets not go anywhere saying that chili should be on a hot dog..at most, some mustard nd sauerkrut. You want to eat chili..eat it..leave it off a hot dog.

And New Jersey….ive seen them put cream cheese or mashed potatoes on hot dogs…another abomination to the human spirit.

Nathans is the only true hot dog….it must also be HALAL,

Seriously, I’m not saying people don’t but the places I go to in Boston.... like Sullivan’s on Castle Island (South Boston)....it’s standard offerings ( minced onion, relish, mustard and dare I say....KETCHUP!)

New Englanders, Maine specifically, know of an iconic spot in York, Maine. A roadside converted mobile home that pushes out untold numbers of hotdogs yearly. Proprietary dog made locally with a little snap, steamed bun and again a proprietary relish, which topped with mayo and celery salt is....what you eat before you go to the electric chair! Amazing

Hot dogs must be all beef from parts of the cow that we would normally eat which is why Kosher are best.

Further we should only allow mustard and sauerkraut to be put on the dog on top of the bun.

Sorry you are totally wrong. Nathans are ok but Kosher much better, and sabretts comes from parts of an animal you would get disgusted with if you knew.

Real Kosher Hot Dogs, with natural casings. Typically sold at a Kosher butcher shop or deli, link style, where you can buy a strand of dogs...

You'll get that "CRUNCH" when you bite them...

Add brown mustard, maybe sauerkraut and your golden...

There is only one Hot Dog in the world, worth eating ... & that's a Fenway Frank, sitting in the Bleachers at Fenway Park.

Get 'em while you can, because there won't be Bleacher Seats much longer.

All others are wannabes.

Flo's aren't all that great. The dogs are lousy, the relish is ... interesting. The whole thing is just a novelty from the past. & trust me, eating a hot dog in 10 degree weather, while standing knee deep in snow, takes some of the fun out your hot dog experience.

Just had a Fenway Frank (in my kitchen). You should give Flo’s another try....maybe in 80 degree weather and a 70 dew point, much better experience ;)

We will only eat Hebrew National hot dogs. Or rather, my husband and my dogs.
When the dogs go into their crates at night, they get 1/6th of a Hebrew National all beef hot dog. All I have to do is open the fridge door at 11 pm and they go tearing into their crates.
This does not work with my husband.

Hummel's all-beef hotdogs, footlong, split and grilled, on a grilled top-split hot-dog roll, with spicy mustard and chopped onion.
Or their regular, with chili and shredded cheddar cheese.
Or my absolute favorite: with shredded cheddar and two strips of bacon.

But always split dogs. And always Hummel's. Can't get them around here and so far I haven't had anything that comes close.

(and yeah they're from Connecticut. Made in New Haven. Perri Sausage Company and Lenders Bagels originate in New Haven too. My grandfather was friends with Mr. Lender, and I worked briefly as a temp at Perri Sausage.)

You can get kosher dogs south of here, in Tampa, and West Palm and Boynton Beach, Boca Raton, Ft. Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach, all of that mess on the east coast. Lots of excellent Jewish delis and bagel shops to choose from. Lots of all kinds of local cultural foods from all different cultures. Unforunately, one thing that lacks in The Villages is diversity.

Hot dogs are an abomination, food of the devil and should be banned, Kosher, Halal or Coney.
They even boil the disgusting things, for heaven’s sake
The ingredients seen to be a paste of unidentifiable source, much of which I am sure is waste from food bins, and veterinary surgeries.
There is only one item of culinary perfection that is worth eating, in a bread roll, and that is the Great British Banger.
Perfection in a roll or on a plate!

OP Doesn’t Nathan’s make “coney” packaged in 1 or 5 pound packages, which can be bought at grocery such as Kroger, Meijer, Or shipped directly to your home?

So does Nathan’s make coney for only Midwestern people? Cause is also served in their establishments.

Then again National Coney dogs and coney can also be bought At Gordon’s.

I have no problem when people talk about their favorites. It’s the BS statements that something is the absolute best and nothing else is worth it that bothers me.

With that said, there is never any reason to eat anything but vanilla ice cream on top of a brownie and then covered with Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Syrup. Don’t even think about using that lesser chocolate syrup that is also made by Hershey’s. Only Dark will do. :icon_wink:

Have yet to hear of a dog in this thread that I wouldn't love - at least as long as vegetable matter is left off it. BTW, the Sam's dogs seem identical to the Costco dogs to me. I do not have discerning tastes.

Nathans is the only true hot dog….it must also be HALAL,
Frankly my dear--------I don't give a mustard soaked DAMN !

:icon_wink:

I've never had it. Didn't even know they made more than one kind of chocolate syrup. But I wouldn't put it on vanilla ice cream with a brownie. I'm not a fan of vanilla ice cream, OR of brownies.

I like Hershey's syrup in milk, and sometimes on coffee ice cream. But when I really want to sauce up ice cream it's got to be Mrs. Richardson's hot fudge sauce.

OK, so being a Texas gal for over 20 years, it is Ball Park. Who the heck is Nathans??

Also, what is it the with the Coneys here (i.e. Coneys at 301 & 466a) Being from Tulsa and Houston, you STEAM the buns, and put the (tiny unknown source) hotdogs on there with mustard (on the bottom) , chili with GRATED onions (not chopped) and lots of cheese.

Growing up (Kansas) it was those awful Oscar Meyer wieners, with mustard and Pickle relish (or BOILED with Miracle Whip on White Bread - not a bun). I'm sure that with get someone riled up!

Now my dad (German descent) would always try to get us to put sauerkraut on them, but seemed he only wanted to put them on Brats.

I'm originally from Wisco and hotdogs are picnic food for the kids. :a20: :throwtomatoes:

Brats are better. Johnsonville only. And must be slow cooked in beer and onions before grilling. And use tongs not a fork otherwise you'll ruin it and make 'em too dry.

Do NOT use a hotdog bun. Must be a hoagie style bun or brat bun.

Topped with Frank's kraut and ground mustard only.

Serve with Point beer.

Enjoy your tailgating. :spoken:

Nathans is the only true hot dog….
IMHO, Nathans isn't even a close second to Michigan's supreme hot dog; the Vienna with Natural Casing by Koegel's. Even though it's a small company serving mostly southern Michigan and a little of northern Ohio, those of us from Michigan crave it enough that they send a freezer truck to The Villages (and to other locations up and down the Eastern seaboard) twice a year where we fans gladly line up in a hot parking lot to get six month's worth of them. I've served them to friends here that have never heard of them and they get near-universal acclaim. Two of my friends are serious hot dog connoisseurs, having eaten them all over the world, and both say that this is the best hot dog either of them has ever eaten.

D*mn, now you got me hankerin' for a hot dog! Gotta get some Koegel's out of the freezer and go get me some buns at the store!

Serve the Curve! (a slogan used by Koegel's)

And lets not discuss something MidWesterners call “Coney Sauce”….there is no Coney Sauce in Coney Island

According to Wikipedia, hot dogs were not invented by him, but Nathan Handwerker (the founder of Nathan's) was responsible for really making them popular at his stand (and later restaurant) on Coney Island. Thus a "Coney" is synonymous with hot dogs, not neccessarily with the various ways of serving them. "Coney sauce" is therefore essentially, "hot dog sauce", used to liven up the too-often bland flavoring of hot dogs. Variations on it seem to have been invented in several places around the country (in Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Texas and Ontario) , mostly by Greek immigrants who opened up hot dog stands in various places. Michigan seems to be where it is the most popular and has sub-regional variations, including Detroit-, Flint-, Jackson- and Kalamazoo-style. In many Michigan "Coney Island" restaurants, Coney sauce is also served on scrambled hamburger. This is called a "Loose Burger." Both "Coney dogs" and "Loose Burgers" often come with onions and some mustard.

I personally prefer the drier, meatier Flint-style Coney sauce on hot dogs and the wetter, less-meaty Detroit-style on Loose Burgers. I go without mustard (never cared for the stuff) and onions (they don't like me - why should I like them?). Until reading this article, I'd never even heard of Jackson- or Kalamazoo-style Coney Sauce. Next time I go home to Michigan, I'm going to have to look those up!

Lordy, the sprung out a memory I'd long surpressed. My elementary school would wrap a slice of cheese (one of those evenly-slice, square, Kraft Single-types) and a slice of white bread around a god-awful, cheap hot dog, stick a toothpick through it and bake it. They served it under the name, "Winky Dinks". Yeezus!

However, somebody at Pillsbury must have suffered through something similar and came up with a recipe where you wrap one or two of those triangular-shaped "Crescent" bits of dough around a hot dog (preferrably a Koegel's, of course!) and bake that. That is surprisingly not bad.

At least nobody is claiming that the quarter-pound alleged hot dog they serve at Costco's along with a big old soda for a buck-fifty is anything remotely close to good. That thing is a tube of gas, just waiting to hit your gut before the gas is released. Nasty!

I make that very claim. Could live on em. As to those cheese-like slices, can't count the number of weenies straight from the fridge with that very yellow slice as the "bun" that I've conveniently consumed! Heck, that stuff has *already* been cooked! Why would one require *further* cookage??

Now, I *do* have to admit to sometimes varying the shaping of said wrap. Oh, and a frozen hot dog straight from the freezer goes down little differently from a frozen Snickers bar. That cooking stuff is a *lot* of unnecessary work, seems to *me* - not to *mention* zero cleanup. Now I'm gonna have to ponder that "not to mention" cliche and how that never seems to prevent said "mention".

Y'all boil everything!

No self respecting hot dog connoisseur eats boiled hot dog (except for the "dirty water dogs form the carts in NYC and Philly...). They must be grilled, so you get that crunch!

Now go sit in a corner and think about what you did...

Nathan's hot dogs are "Kosher Style", meaning they are all beef. So no, they don't qualify as Halal, either...

Well I've read 5 pages and haven't seen a Zweigles comment yet. Up north you can get them at Wegmans and just about any major supermarket. Our relatives in Florida beg for us to bring them with us when we visit and then they ration them out until our next visit. For those of you who are grossed out by the thought of a hot dog, I'm guessing the option for red or WHITE hotdogs would push you further to the edge but some really love those best. They are all fat and pop open when they are ready. To each his own but something to try if you get the chance.

Best dog I've ever had was in 1966 at Memorial Stadium with my Dad watching Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Boog Powell, and Jim Palmer in the World Series. Eskay natural casing dog. You can't get anything like that for many many years now. My local butcher had them until the economy killed Eskay and they bailed on Harm City.

I made a trek to Chicago to try the famous food. Hotdogs sucked

I made a trek to Coney Island. Loved the roller coaster and "Shoot the Freak" attraction on the boardwalk but.....Nathan's sucked

Maybe when you were kids and products were quality not quantity and profit

If anyone knows of storemade natural casing dogs around the villages please let me know for my grill. If I buy a dog out for lunch, it's a Costco $1.50 dog and soda. I have some Costco dogs in the fridge now but they are over spiced for me. they're more of a kielbasa. I'll cook with kraut. There really is no super good hotdogs available. It's hard to beat Ballpark beef Frank's or Oscar Meyer's as a supermarket purchase to fill the hotdogs void
