“Best” is a subjective term. Most successful financially? Most groundbreaking? Best social commentary? Best Cinematography? Best historical epic? Best at setting a trend? The list could go on and on.

For better or worse, mine are as follows:

BEST TRILOGY: The Ring Trilogy, Hands down. Great from the first to the last. There’ve been other memorable trilogies (The Godfather trilogy, for one) but all seem to have one episode that fell significantly short of the others. Not so with The Ring.

BEST HISTORICAL EPIC: Lawrence of Arabia. Pretty true to the facts with some embellishments (Sherif Ali was a complete fabrication) and with uniformly great acting. Plus, the visuals were out of this world.

MOST GROUNDBREAKING: The Birth Of A Nation. Set the standard for many subsequent movies, including wide-action shots, a score that was part of the storytelling, great close-ups, use of color to emphasize scenes, etc. …and this was in 1915! It gets often ignored, particularly by those folks who seem that to recognize its excellence in light of its really cruddy story line somehow would tarnish them, but it is great on so many levels.

BEST SOCIAL COMMENTARY: Nuremberg. It’s topic of the responsibility of a nation’s judiciary is as pertinent and contemporary (maybe “timeless” is a better word) today as when it came out in 1963. And to call the cast a “constellation” of stars is not understating it. Both nuanced and hard hitting…two qualities moviemaking has seem to have lost in the years since. Others that IMO rank right up there would be Schindler’s List and Lincoln.

BEST HISTORICALLY ACCURATE: Gettysburg. True to the actual battle in almost every respect. Too bad it was succeeded by that clunker Gods and Generals…would have had the makings of a great trilogy, otherwise.

BEST REVISIONIST WESTERN: Dances With Wolves. Not too many pictures where the Native Americans are the going-away heroes and the Civil War soldiers, almost to a man, are despicable toads, but Dances With Wolves pulls it off. Very entertaining, as long as you’re not really that much into historical accuracy.

BEST OUT-AND-OUT ENTERTAINING: Quigley Down Under. Great American (transplanted) Hero offs the chief bad guy and about a thousand of his supporters along the way, rescues a baby, is idolized by the Aborigines and (of course) wins the Fair Maiden in the process. Nothing there a red-blooded American guy wouldn’t like. And I would give a lot to get my hands on that rifle or on one of the replicas that have been made since.

In 1970, when times were changing and counter culture films were be being released enmass, and just after "Easy Rider" was the first R Rated film to be shown in military theaters (my only available venue at the time) , I saw a film called "Joe" which starred Peter Boyle. It was the most disturbing film I had seen up to that point in my life. I, along with the rest of America, have since been completely desensitized to violence in film.

I was never a fan of Western movies until this one came out. And I did not see one mention here. This movie came out in 1968 and had a host of great stars. Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Jayson Robards, Claudia Cardinale and Jack Elam. It was the only movie Fonda played the bad guy. From the first ten minutes into the movie, you hated Fonda, It's an epic spaghetti western filmed by Sergio Leone. It's widely considered to be one of the greatest westerns of all time. You can still see this on TV.

A Few Good Men.....so many quotables from that movie. AND My Cousin Vinny!
LOVED My Cousin Vinny. It isn't often that an actor can appear in a movie completely out of character relating to the roles he or she usually plays and do as well as Joe Pesci did in that movie. Hilarious! Fred Gwynne as the judge, too.

Another movie along those lines was Leap Of Faith, with Steve Martin as the charlatan faith-healer Jonas Nightengale in the only serious role I've ever seen him in. A really excellent movie in all respects that never really got the recognition that in my mind it deserved, especially for the revelations of many of the ways such phonies "motivate" people to make donations. And with a really great (and unexpected) ending.

Of course humor is so subjective. When friends and I saw "Brady Bunch" movie we thought it was hysterical but people were walking out. It was mostly younger people that couldn't relate to the "Bunch" genre of the '70's I guess. Stupid humor but relatable to those of us that grew up watching Brady Bunch.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

A Christmas Carol (the one with Alistair Sim, but many are good because the story is so good)

Cocoon

Harry Potter (1-8)

Agree the one with Alistair Sim is so good, but my personal fav is now the one with George C. Scott (Patton). As Scrooge, George Scott is just amazing (listen to some his "mutterings" to himself while various "spirits" are speaking to him ! Classic for sure.

On my "greatest" list is Dr. Zhivago, and NOT because it's a "love" story, but for the powerful message it gave at the time (probably would not be made in Hollywood now !). Also War and Peace, The Last Emperor, and Gandhi are on my list... obviously I favor big epic like films ! Pearl Harbor, Out of Africa, Passage to India... they "don't make um like that any more"....LOL !

No kidding!!! 1939 was a GREAT year for movies. The thirties in general were good, I think because of the hardships of the Great Depression, people need the escape that movies provided & 1939 was the pinacle.

Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Dark Victory, Wuthering Heights, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Three Musketeers & lots of others.

The Godfather

The first one was fabulous, the first "follow up" was interesting, but nothing like the original based on the novel. Jaws was terrific, IMO, even though the mechanical shark (given it's '75 debut) looks so contrived these days. The Jaws follow ups, like the Rocky follow ups, never reached the quality of the originals, again, just my opinion.

It is very expensive to make Hollywood movies, so the companies rely on sequels to bring in cash. They don't need new ideas, frequently refuse to pay the original screen writer's asking salary, don't need much of an advertising budget as the original paved the way with audiences, simply put they are most often low quality cash cows.

Unforgiven is the greatest western that impacts the way you see gunslingers. Anything Clint Eastwood and also the title of my favorite Metallica song.

Remember when you could only see Wizard of Oz once a year on TV?

Seven Samauri, Jaws, Raiders, Das Boot, etc....all excellent. Jaws made me afraid of the ocean but still drink some Narragansett beers.

I'll add some of my faves even though they may not be classics:

Star Wars....first year in High school and first time I went on my own to the movies. It changed the way films are made forever.

The Terminator...don't worry....he'll be Bach

Top Gun Maverick. I dispise Tom Cruise but just love me some Top Gun. Was better than Top Gun and can't wait for Part 3

Meet the Parents....Jack talk Thai!

Christmas Vacation....yes, I could be Cousin Eddie

Step Brothers, Ricky Bobby, anything Will Ferrell

And I will disclose my favorite film is The Waterboy. Adam Sandler has made some entertaining comedies. Happy Gilmore is kinda a classic. Yes I am immature and usually only looking for laughs when I choose to watch movies....unless I'm forced to watch a "Chick Flick".

You pretty much named all my Dads favorite movies. Indirectly I’ve seen...or heard them all many times over the years. Good list

Didn’t want to start a thread on this.....and full disclaimer, this is not a political discussion just an observation.

Is it me or does US Rep. Matt Gaetz of FL look exactly like Randall McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) in One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest? A definite separated at birth if I ever saw one!

What say you?

Both The Shining and Deliverance messed with my head for a while after seeing them.

Napoleon Dynamite hasn't been mentioned. My daughters made us watch it at one holiday gathering. Couldn't *believe* anyone would intentionally sit and watch something like that more than once. Have now watched it multiple times. What is *wrong* with me??!

Two other movies I found with a very strong message were Paths of Glory, and All Quiet on the Western Front.

I'd never get in the water without a cage around great whites, but Jaws seemed to give all sharks a bad name. :-) Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mentalblock/3395035238/in/photostream/)

What's the matter with you folks??? "Dr. Strangelove" for the win.

Great movie.
Peter Sellers was great, one of my favorites with him was 'Being There'.

Another favorite, 'Harold and Maude'.
