We noticed people have put stickers on thier mailboxes (Citrus Grove) I think it's cool to remember your box at the beginning. And add some "personality " Are the stickers allowed? What is everyone's feelings on them? (Should I duck now?)

For me the sticker is essential. I am sight impaired and cannot see the numbers, but I do know the vicinity of my box and I recognize my sticker..

When stickers are removed it takes the paint finish off the mailbox. Some mail stations stickers have been completely removed and had to be repaired and painted. Looks awful.
In the new areas stickers are not allowed

What paint? Ours are plain aluminum... (or "aluminium" for those wacky Brits...)

Agree, ours are also plain metal. After removing a sticker the only remains might be some glue, which could easily be removed with some 'Goo Gone'.
Also, as above mentioned, for some people with vision problems the stickers are wonderful.

Why do you care what others think about them? If you like it or need it, do it. You certainly don't need the approval of a bunch of strangers to make a minor decision like this.

The "building" that houses the cluster mailboxes, the postal station itself, is owned by The Villages. The boxes, and the doors to the boxes, and the locks, are property of the USPS. Theoretically you're not supposed to adorn those box doors with anything, because you don't own them. But the USPS has taken a hands-off approach to them and as long as you're not obscuring the box number or blocking the lock, or putting the sticker in between your box and someone else's, no one's going to "do" anything about it.
Some people consider them to be very tacky. And - some of them (IMO) are tacky. But some are cute, or pretty. I'd suggest keeping political stickers off of them, or anything that suggests that you're "pro" or "anti" anything.

Do not remember one from before, ours has lots of stickers and lots of places where the sticker has been removed leaving residue.
Do not really care one way or another

Seems not allowed at our boxes. Boxes have "conveniently" placed scratches on them instead.

But then again, my wife and I are from two different parts of the UK. You should hear the friendly banter we have about the way you say scone.

Yep, I've got a sticker on my Car and my House as well so I can find them. I have the 'glow in the dark' kind so I can find them even at night.

I’m in a new area, not only do we have stickers galore but the mailboxes aren’t painted. They’re aluminum. I personally don’t have stickers but couldn’t care less. I can’t do anything about them either way so…

Ownership of the boxes has been questioned in other threads. It appears the USPS *might* own the keys and locks but if I remember correctly, the USPS was less interested when it came to replacing rusted doors.

Our old neighborhood mailboxes (2008) had a coating that when stickers were removed it took off sections of the coating. It was grey and when you removed stickers it came off in sections leaving a zebra pattern. We were so embarrassed when we removed the sticker put on our mailbox by someone else, removing sections of the coating, making our box look awful. Since the sticker was clear, with yellow, the grey that came off was definitely from the box.
2010 Notes were put in mailboxes property of USPS, that stickers were being removed and refinished. No stickers were allowed.
So to those who are newer the very old boxes are definitely different then what is being used by USPS today

One of my favorite subjects. That, and accents. May have pointed out previously here that I recently learnt that "aluminium" is actually correct. "(IUPAC) adopted aluminium as the standard international name for the element in 1990. In 1993, they recognized aluminum as an acceptable variant". Humphrey Davy found it and called it aluminum, but he coulda treated Michael Faraday better. . .
Oh, and I like the stickers.

So when a resident sells there house and they have placed a sticker on their mailbox, do they remove it before they move? Or does it become a " not my problem anymore" attitude?

When I bought my house, I inherited the sticker. The real estate agent also refused to tell me my box number, so maybe the prior owners found it by sticker & not number.

At closing you should gotten an envelope with 2-3 keys and the number of your box is clearly written on the outside of the envelope. At least for all 4 of our houses that has been the norm

At closing I did NOT get an envelope with 2-3 keys & the number of my mailbox. There was no envelope & there was no number written on this non-existant envelope.
Why, when I clearly stated that I had trouble getting my mailbox number after purchasing my house did you
1. Decide to disbelieve me?
2. Decide to post your disbelief publicly?
As I stated that was what we received for the our four houses, 3 new one preowned.
At sell of our last two home we were instructed to leaved Keys on counter, which we left In the original envelope from closing.
If one doesn’t question that vital information is missing at closing, then that’s on the buyer.
If no keys are left at preowned, then simple trip to local Postoffice for mail box number and new locks and keys provided will be installed.
Our garage door openers were missing at preowned. Just stopped at Romac and bought new ones, gave us sheet to program, issue fixed. Not a big deal, definitely didn’t get upset that they were missing. There are better things to think about, that one cannot fix
Giving info on our experience is just that. Seems you made your experience public once you posted on any public forum.

My parents taught me to respect other people's property. The mailboxes are some else's property, you do not have the right to deface that property. Using the justifications espoused in this thread, I guess it would be permissible for anyone to put their favorite whimsical or funny sticker on your house or car, right? Apparently, entitlement trumps good manners and proper morals.

In our villages it's been "allowed" for 18 years. No one seems to mind (?) but maybe they do and just "suck it up" ? We have really enjoyed having NO sticker as it helps us find our immediately...LOL ! Only there for literally seconds each day, so frankly the variety of alma maters, favorite teams, home state stickers, etc. is kind of interesting and certainly doesn't interfere with my life in a meaningful way ! ?

Not sure I understand, but that's happened to me before. I think MANY people do but whimsical and personally meaningful, stickers and other symbols on their cars and homes( garden flags, favorite team symbols, bumper stickers and window stickers of their preferred political candidate, their choice, even Christians putting small crosses near their homes. To me, putting an NHL team sticker on a pigeon hole mailbox that is NOT in a federal post office, is not really akin to spray painting a statue in the courthouse or spray painting offensive words on public sidewalks, but that's just one opinion !

Really ? Oh well, just like it's "illegal" to rent out houses for a night or a weekend on AB&B, not have to pay any taxes of any kind for running a motel ? Or like it's illegal to run a golf cart over 19 miles an hour ? Or like there is a "limit" as to how long a "guest" can stay in your home before that "guest" exceeds the legal "rules", just on and on, NOT saying rules are not important to a society, just saying "pick the hill you want to die on" is all, mail boxes probably not the most important consideration contributing to the deterioration of our community ! Just one opinion among many ! If you take a breath and consider the stickers on the mailboxes carefully, do you think the only law enforcement we have here (the local sheriff's office and deputies) have the time to take on mailbox crime with all that goes on here each and every day ? Can't even begin to calculate the theft, break-ins, traffic accidents, shop lifting, deed restrictions ignored, etc. they have to deal with daily.

Yes I agree but you have to understand that SOME people think in extremes , it’s either black or white- no gray area. Something so innocuous.as applying a harmless sticker to easily identify your mailbox is a mortal sin punishable by being banned from the community. Folks like that just need to get a life. No not golf or mah-jongg or samba - a life.

No idea. I don't know which boxes are assigned to which owners, and I'm not in the habit of watching people put stickers on/taking stickers off their boxes. I've put one on mine, and it's removable. If I forget to take it off when I move, or if I die and am no longer capable of visiting the box, I'm sure the new owner will keep it or peel it off however they see fit.

Reat the article: Using the broken windows theory to tackle antisocial behaviour | Housing Network | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/housing-network/2013/aug/06/antisocial-behaviour-broken-window-theory)
:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:
It starts with Mail Box Stickers...
Then you have human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... MASS HYSTERIA!
Dr. Peter Venkman knows of these things...

The stickers make finding the correct box so much easier, even if some find them tacky. I have no desire to watch a visually impaired neighbor looking like Indiana Jones trying to navigate the Temple of Doom just to retrieve a handful of junk mail.

There is a lot of history, and cricket and rugby hasn't helped.
Next time you meet an Aussie, ask to see their shackle marks! :boxing2:
Thx.

When in Durham, couldn't understand King's English. If you can, more regards your way! Scots are the best! Gotta like their cows! Aussies, make fun of everyone, but they did give us "AC\DC" and "Bee Gees" (thank God that punk rock came along to wipe disco away!). Love driving on the left side of the road too!
Must be a LOT of Brits in TV, then...on the MMPs anyway...

I personally think all of these different stickers are tacky. Makes the place look like a ghetto.
Have you ever been in a ghetto? I think not!

For me the sticker is essential. I am sight impaired and cannot see the numbers, but I do know the vicinity of my box and I recognize my sticker..
They also help those with memory problems, too, As memory diminish, they remember their sticker.

Yep have driven through, visited shelters, and gone to graffiti art in the ghetto. Tags have come a long ways from just using a can of spray paint with zero talent

I just joined TOTV so someone probably already mentioned this.........it is against the law to deface government property, which the mailboxes are. However, it appears that those in control of The Villages mailboxes don't enforce this law. Personally, having a sticker on our mailbox makes it much easier to find quickly. We Villagers are WAY too busy to spend an extra minute looking for the right box!! LOL

Next time I'm bored I'm going to go to the postal station and move a bunch of stickers to the right or left 1 box and sit back and watch.

I do not have a sticker on my mailbox and I never will. I think stickers are tacky.
Boy, I'm glad the owner put a sticker on the mailbox next to me. Makes my mailbox easier to find!

They are supposed to be tacky. That is why they stick to the mailbox.

I also use my neighbor's sticker to locate my mailbox. It's the same reason I didn't buy any palm trees. I can look at my neighbor's trees any time I want.

Not sure how many Brits are in TV, but have traveled the world so have had the opportunity to drive on the left. I did almost get hit by someone thinking they were in opposite world while on the MMP though. More than likely an ID10T drunk leaving Sawgrass.

Best post this thread. At my parents mailboxes someone late at night plastered political stickers on mailboxes.
Not sure if they were trying to give a hint it looked bad, or wanted someone to rethink how to vote. Really angry folks at mail pickup next morning, plus too forever to remove

It's just old fart graffiti. Too me it's just trashy
Glad you feel that way, that means no lawn ornaments in your yard or anything else that goes against the deed restrictions. Hope you can share that with your neighbors.

Well if you see a sticker with a picture of an upside down colander with strands of spaghetti slithering out of it, and underneath it says "WWHNAD?" - it's probably my mailbox. I'm a Pastafarian, and that jumble of letters means "What would His Noodly Appendage Do?"

When stickers are removed it takes the paint finish off the mailbox. Some mail stations stickers have been completely removed and had to be repaired and painted. Looks awful.
In the new areas stickers are not allowed
Really? Because I live in a newer area (Newell) and I have stickers (along with a bunch of other people) and no one has said anything.

Welcum too TOTV. Yu will fit rite in!
:1rotfl::1rotfl: Yep fit right in with those who play no golf, don't take any lessons, don't swim, stay out of the sun, don't play pickle-ball or shuffle board, don't volunteer at their favorite charity, dance, bike, fish, or...... just people with nothing pressing to do but study the postal station pigeon hole boxes, there's a hobby for everyone here, that's the great part of a senior community...LOL ! From a different era, but when you have time on your hands, read the great James Michener's Recessional about Florida retirement living. Quite a departure from his great novels like Texas, Mexico, Hawaii, Space, etc. etc. etc.

What you don’t know, is the mailbox sticker police, is a subsidiary of the mattress tag police.
LOL.... is that a division of the "DO NOT REMOVE THIS TAG" pillow police too,
