I know that Sprouts has been open for awhile, but I haven’t shopped there yet. Anyone have an opinion on it? Worth the trip?

Thanks

It's worth the trip, but you better hurry. I predict that the store will close because they have very few customers. Charging 10 cents for a plastic bag turns me off, but I am easily turned off by environmental wackos. One good thing is that you can buy a lot of ready-to-eat items. Another plus is that there is a Jersey Mike's sub shop nearby.

Went by there yesterday prime time shopping hours I thought they was closed with the few car’s in parking lot. Those cars was probably employees and JMs customers?

I really like Sprouts. I don't get out that way very often though, I live in the northeast corner of The Villages (Historic Section) and have eight grocery options all within 10 minutes of each other. (Two Publixes, one Winn Dixie, Aldi's, Walmart, Target, BJ's and Sam's).

Never been there have heard repeatedly pricing very high and very happy with fruits and vegetables from Sams and BJ's.

They totally screwed up a dinner order for a club we are in and that didnt give me a reason to go.

Although I like sprouts, it’s got nothing on Fresh Market as far as products and stuff generally costs about the same. Plus, they push shoppers to self check out and charge for grocery bags. Based on that, I go to Fresh Market.

I think Sprouts is fine. It's one of those places that is going to come down to personal preference. Not quite a love it or hate it type place, but close.

I like the prepared or semi-prepared foods there. Their steaks and fresh fish are too pricey for what you get. The produce is good though. They carry a bunch of items that most other places don't carry including Three Wishes and Magic Spoon cereal which I like.

Nice selection of sauces and condiments.

There is a big difference in pricing between Aldi's and Sprouts and that is why no one complains that shops at Aldi's about bringing their own bags or grabbing a box. For the price of everything at Sprouts you expect a free bag. Plus the way the store is situated it is to far back to attract 466 traffic. Whoever agreed to that location - well - it was a bad idea. I was excited about Sprouts going in as I live close but prices are too high to make it worth it.

In the UK, all stores charge for plastic bags. We all bring our own shopping bags.
Whilst there is no legislation where the money goes from those who purchase plastic bags, businesses are expected to pass on the money to a charity of their choice....... Yeah! :icon_wink:

When I was stationed in Germany in the early 1980s (Army), every German grocery store charged a few pfennigs for plastic bags. We lived 'on the economy' and did most of our shopping in the local stores. We just got into the habit of bringing our own bags.

We stop weekly, right after fresh market baking on site, (best pies for $5-7) if one needs a quick sandwich on homemade bread.

Those who need to shop for special dietary items it’s the only place to do one stop shopping.

We buy ready to bake, Or skillet dinners with vegetables and all the seasonings 2-3 times a week. Depending on what you like dinner for two can be $8-$15 sometimes with leftovers for lunch. Their shrimp fajitas and salmon dinners are very good. Meatloaf dinner is not as good as moms but better than mine. Fresh meatballs ready for sauce are excellent

All meals come in a microwave or oven ready container.

Zero parking spots early morning when we shop. Mid to late day parking not a problem.

If cost for groceries, is a concern than we need to revamp our budget.

Hard to bash a business is one has never stepped foot in the door, but then again it’s a hobby for some:22yikes:

I agree, I enjoyed the alternative to Fresh Market and was spending about $75-100 a week on produce and specialty items. Once they started charging $.10 a bag, haven’t been back.

My guess is you don’t shop at Sam’s, BJs, Costco or Aldi, who have never had free bags.

We always take our own bags to all grocery stores. Not a fan of plastic bags so thin they rip open. But then again I don’t shop at Aldi because bags aren’t free, I just don’t like their products.

I will say I did buy one bag at sprouts and it rivals a couple of my reusable bags, sturdy and handles that don’t rip off

We have tried to give this store a chance. Some good produce and specialty goods not found in some other stores, but very expensive, especially compared to items you can find at Winn-Dixie. The produce section does not seem to be culled as often as other local groceries. Watch out for frequent molded or rotten items. Also we often find that sale prices posted on the shelves do not register at checkout, and due to limited number of staff when the cashier sends another employee for a price check it can seem to take forever. The parking and bag situations are aggravating but not a deal breaker. Given the nearby competition, I'm afraid this store is not likely to make it financially.

I'm thankful we have a Sprouts. Not the same as Whole Foods, but a decent alternative to find specialty items that are unavailable at Publix or Winn Dixie. I regularly shop Publix, Fresh Market and Sprouts. It's great to have grocery options.

Good for some items. My wife likes the bulk spices and IMO they are the only place in TV that we've found so far that sells Polish sausage that is pretty close to the real thing. Pomelos too: much better quality at about 1/2 the price of Publix, and many stores don't sell them at all. Also Thai cooking is heavy on mushrooms and Sprouts has a good variety.

Overall pricing seems pretty high though, and like some who post here I am turned of by the $.10 per plastic bag that they charge.

IF one has a food sensitivity, is gluten, this store is a great option as they carry items others don't carry. Groceries are expensive ALL over! Do you shop Publix?? Even "discount" ones such as Walmart are ridiculous. I wish Sprouts well. As for bags---others on this link have stated that it's no different than Aldi or Sam's and probably BJ's. You all should realize that Sprouts is more of a "specialty" store and maybe prices are elevated a bit. Fresh Market falls into that line as well. As I stated in another thread---there are folks who would complain if hung with a new rope.

I didn't realize that 10¢ was such a hardship for people, but then I didn't realize that anyone still doesn't bring their own bags to the store when they shop. I get a lot of exercise just walking to the store door, and remembering that I left my bag in the car........ Hahahaha

Sprouts - great place to pickup a cooked plastic carton of a dinner (go early) or various vegetables.
Fresh Market - awesome cookie and bakery plus old style meat counter and like a deli counter to get the usual stuff. And ice cream you cannot get anywhere else

I finally made it up there from way down south. Half hour drive. Had a few specialty items I liked. But the chicken I bought was rancid so I will not be returning. I googled if there was a recall on the chicken and what I got was that a fair of the meat sold their is spoiled.

we like sprouts for things we can't get from other stores like certain dried fruits, we also like their wild caught frozen shrimp, reasonably priced pink salt and some other things

hate to see stores/businesses fail, I buy extra when we do go hoping that will help the store catch on, hope it will not close

Limited selection? I think maybe you're not going to Sprouts, but some other store. Honey mangos, dragon fruit, no idea if they still have it but they've had durian. Cotton Candy grapes, mineola tangelos, in addition to the usual 10 varieties of apples, 5 varieties of pears, every berry you can think of when available in season, two sections just for greens of all types from lettuce to endive and everything in between, PLUS the Villages Grown section, on top of all of the stuff that Publix has.

And the prices are generally less for the usual stuff than you'd pay at Publix.

You are free to bring reusable bags to any store, and to do whatever you want to improve the environment. Charging 10 cents for a bag is not about the money. But, a lot of people are turned off by those who want to force other people's behavior. The Sprouts policy to charge for bags is just a stupid idea that is costing them business because a lot of people resent being told what to do. If they actually wanted to reduce the amount of plastic, why do they package most of their products in plastic?

Totally agree. If I went there I'd make a statement by bringing my plastic bags from Publix.
I also get all my statements, bills and correspondence by e-mail, except for one. That business did not ask to go paperless because of convenience or because it was saving money. It was to "reduce their carbon footprint"---the perfect phrase for me to continue to get paper from them until I die. And this business is not stupid---they're simply catering to the stupid people who think the global warming sky is falling.

I do believe the business that want to go paperless are doing it to save money. Less printing to be done and savings on paper.

Why should they pay the cost of printing statements when they can email and let their customer print them out.

I certainly don’t need to bring plastic bags into my house that are found later in waterways and on streets I carry many reusable bags in my car. I find it ridiculous when I see the number of plastic bags that some people use in one shopping trip at some stores. Absurd

Funny about, "people resenting other people telling them what to do". People are told that they must pay their taxes. People in the US are told to drive on the right side of the road. Plastic bottles and particularly plastic bags don't ALWAYS make it to the trash cans or bags. That is how they could end up at the bottom of a lake in The Villages or in the ocean. And a plastic bag sitting on top of some coral in a Coral reef would probably kill some. True, excess CO2 is killing more living Coral than plastic bags. Love Sprouts but yea, there haven't been many shoppers in there lately. This is the busiest season too. Earth Fare lasted about two years. Hate to see the same happen to Sprouts. I'll keep going though.

I know that Sprouts has been open for awhile, but I haven’t shopped there yet. Anyone have an opinion on it? Worth the trip?

Thanks

If it was convenient to me I would certainly patronize them. I wish it was. One time I bought fresh produce and it was moldy the next day. They have a decent selection of items, and the smaller the store, the quicker the stop, so that is a plus.

Funny about, "people resenting other people telling them what to do". People are told that they must pay their taxes. People in the US are told to drive on the right side of the road. I mean, I don't know too many people that stop for green traffic light and go on the red lights. Laws and convention Sheldon.
There is a big difference between the Government passing a law that everyone must follow, and a grocery store trying to promote an agenda that a lot of people don't agree with and who are not going to follow.

I love the plastic bags from Publix...

I use them to pick up dog poop... I guess I'm recycling the bag before it's recycled again, for the last time...

So happy that we have Sprouts. The store carries healthful and interesting brands and items not found elsewhere. The bulk section is extensive and beautifully maintained. Spend some time looking around. Your health is worth some extra money! Our health is our most important asset.

Meats are very tasty. Produce and fruits far better than any other grocery store. You definitely get what you pay for!👍🏻

I’m glad Sprouts charges for their reusable shopping bags. Their bags are much thicker than the regular plastic bags. I have reused my Sprout bags for months. All stores should charge for bags. Small things like these bags help to improve our environment. Small things add up.

But not .10 per bag! Those bags cost like 1/100 of a cent and that’s probably too much.

Really unique store. Fruit and veggies are the best. Always interesting to shop there. Whoever picked that spot was not thinking. They really belong in one of the malls and not isolated in that out of the way spot. I can't imagine any store being a success there. Maybe a "Hooters".

Never liked the one that was 5 minutes from us before we moved here. Went to this one once and liked it even less. We drive an hour to Dr. Phillips to shop at TJ’s because it’s so much better. Wish it was just around the block from us though like back home.

I certainly don’t need to bring plastic bags into my house that are found later in waterways and on streets.

Really P.G? WTF are you doing with the plastic bags that go from your house to the waterways and onto streets. Perhaps more responsible disposal should be on the agenda. Like J.M., we find multiple useful reuses for the mislabeled single use bags, and then send them out responsibly with our trash where they don’t wind up in the waterways or streets. We hoard our plastic bags from Publix and bring them up north with us for reuse, where the wack job tree huggers have made them no longer available.

I found their sushi to be decent. I like their potato egg salad. They have some unique goods that I don’t find elsewhere. When I go, I typically use my Trader Joe’s bag

If you ever travel in France, and like to use your own bags for shopping, pop into a Carrefour Supermarket and buy their re-usable shopping bags.
Had ours for 'double number' years, and still going strong.
Best shopping bags we ever purchased.

There's zero chance those thick bags they use cost less than .10. Even regular grocery bags cost at least that much to the retailers now with inflation.

Sounds like you're living in the 80's or something.

Not exactly. Amazon sells regular plastic grocery bags with handles for 3 cents each. The thicker ones are 8 cents each. Those are retail prices. The Sprouts bags are slightly thicker than the ones at Publix, but both can be reused if you want to. I wouldn't reuse either, but I prefer the Publix bags and they are free.

I love Sprouts, and go about once a week. They always seem to have good seafood - I like the wild caught shrimp, and good selection of fruits and vegetables, nice quality organic veggies. The store has a nice layout, is very clean and just has a pleasing atmosphere, and the employees seem very friendly. I keep a couple of bags in my car I just take in for shopping, not a big deal.

I know a lady in the UK who uses Waitrose (Like Publix in US.) plastic bags to pack her shopping in from Aldi.
Said she couldn't bare the thought that her neighbor ever found out she shops at Aldi.

Sprouts is nice but nothing that would make we want to go there regularly.

What the area needs is a Detwiller's Farm Market. There are a number of them in the Sarasota area. If anyone has been to one, you know!

On another note, I find it fascinating how a post about a store turns in to a debate about plastic bags, I'm sure the OP appreciates it....

I finally decided to try Sprouts. I normally shop Fresh Market for specials and/or specialty items. Sprouts is very similar to FM, IMO. I have a family member that has a Gluten allergy so I stopped in Sprouts to see what they might have available. They have more GF items available than FM. FM has been reducing their GF items available. Even though I had several cloth bags in my car trunk, I paid the ten cents per bag. The plastic bags are sturdy and they claim they are reusable. If one can afford to shop at specialty stores, they certainly shouldn't complain about shelling out a dime for a bag. When I shopped at Sprouts, the place had very few customers. I think there were more employees than customers at the store at the time I was there.

I like Sprouts, it's like a fancy 7-11 with different things :) but whoever in their company chose that location should be fired or someone greased their palms to sign a lease. It's NEVER busy. Even the day it opened it wasn't busy. Unless you know it is there it is just about totally invisible to passing traffic on 466. There is a little sign on a fence on 466 but the building cannot be seen from the road without specifically knowing it's there and looking for it. Visibilty of the strip mall is blocked by a large fence and tall trees. Can't imagine how many POSSIBLE customers they lose because people driving through the area down 466 have no idea it exists. That entire mall LOCATION is horrible (hidden). It certainly isn't doing enough business to survive, the only thing saving it IMO is they have enough other stores doing well to cover their nut. That's one advantage "chain stores" have is that they can average losses & profits. That PLUS they are insanely overpriced on a lot of name brand stuff. One example is my wife likes some Amy's Vegetarian frozen dinners and they charge $7-$8+ for what Publix and Winn Dixie chanrge $2-$3 less. Their produce is excellent, as are their cinnamon chip scones! :D

For those seeking out grass-fed meats and poultry, and wild-caught fish and seafood, Sprouts is a good option.

Fresh Market reminds me of a shop on the bottom of Beacon Hill in Boston. It was a small neighborhood grocery store that specialised in gourmet foods, fresh-made deli and hot lunch foods, and the usual napkins and forks and canned goods and fresh produce and meats and cheeses. Everything was pricier there, but it was totally worth the extra expense. I didn't have to walk 8 blocks to Big Y and walk back with 8 bags of groceries for a mile and a half til I got home. The shop I went to was only 1 block from my house.

Sprouts is more like something else up north, a sort of miniature health food store with all that produce in the middle, with taste testing, and bulk purchases of grains and spices, granola and nuts, coffee, etc. They definitely cater to more people who come from cities, where these types of stores are common and in walking distance to most people who /would/ shop there. I'd love to see both of them (Fresh Market and Sprouts) over on my end of the world, maybe where Bealls outlet is now, next to Lowes off 441.
