Twice a week a need to clean up the mess that raccoons or possum or whatever animal is tearing open my garbage at night. My pick is about 5:30am so I must place it outside the night before.
Does anyone have a suggestion how to deter these animals from feeding from my garbage ?

try spraying a little vinegar or ammonia on the bags when you put them out

When I had that problem up north I would pour a splash of ammonia on the inside of the bag and a splash on the outside too. It worked.

A couple of things;
1. Freeze the items that become odiferous over time (meat scraps, cantaloupe rinds, etc.) and put them in the bag just before you put it out.
2. Double-bag. We bag our trash in those white pull-tie 13 gallon bags and then put those bags into a large black 35-gallon trashliner bag (as I believe we're supposed to do) when I set out the garbage. I've noticed that a couple of folks on our street who put their garbage out in just the one white bag sometimes have problems with critters. Crows, usually--I often walk early in the morning and have caught 'em in the act.

Don't ask me why, but birds attack white bags more than black bags. We had to stop using the white, no problems since switching to black. I won't go back.

These mint scented bags worked well for us in rural NC.

I put any food items in the bag that the Daily Rag comes in and knot the end. If small, I can double it over and tie it again.
That stops the food smells that attract them, and stops the kitchen from smelling for the days that the trash bag is being filled.
Works well for tins too, such as salmon and tuna, which can start smelling very quickly.

Yes but only once. They will take them with the garbage so prepare to buy often.

Crows have x-ray vision and can see through white bags.
Black bags are like cryptonite. I guessing cause the crows are black and bag black the don’t want to be cannibal’s :super::1rotfl:

Sorry what happens when their habitat bulldozed. 5:30 am very early?
Possums are the only marsupials in northern hemisphere the are nocturnal and get slaughtered due car lights blind them. Quit dorsal creatures on decline in most urban area’s due getting smashed. With all the predators, run overs, and pythons taking over Florida Everglades killing all the native wildlife pythons will be migrating north. Soon to be in village near you if you live behind nature preserve? :22yikes:

We had the racoon problem - Caught them on our surveillance camera so I was sure it was racoons. Tried several things: ammonia, heavy black bags, scented bags etc all of which had minimal effect. The best help was making sure any CHICKEN leftover was put in a separate strong container. Then for some reason the racoons found easier food someplace and we haven't had an issue now for several months-Thank you, whoever you are. Oh! I forgot to mention the best fool proof solution is eating out at restaurants and not bring home a leftover bag. BTW one of our neighbors puts their trash in garbage cans with a very large sign > Do not take > Racoon issue, and the trash company leaves the can.
Good luck!

Better solution. Wife is a night owl and she sits out side with bb gun at night and shoots those darn rodents. She has lots of notches on our bed posts.

Bingo.
Without success, I have tried windex with ammonia, pure ammonia (inside and out), mint scented bags, double bagging and all of the above, all at once. The alarm clock method is the only one that has worked for me. The animals in my neighborhood must be brutes.

Because they are a bloody nuisance, I have them up north.
I use several odor deterrents. First, I put all food that is allowed, down the garbage disposal. I have a strong unit (Chatbrat recommended) so even chicken bones are fine. But not stringy stuff like banana peels. Then, I use lavender scented kitchen bags. I like the scent, the insects don’t. My garbage is left alone. But sometimes the renter next door puts out garbage with food in it and birds attack it etc. so I spray their bags with Lysol. Then the bags are left alone. If I catch renter sometime, I’ll mention it to them, but there is a regular turn over of people next door and I can’t always get to them.

Most depend on area or village. Many people in Fenney have had them for years. They just empty them and put them back on the driveway. Personally with pickup twice a week, I don’t see the need for garbage cans.

The few times it happened to us birds were the culprits.

Your best bet is to call Home Goods up on 466. Women flock to that trash like it's the cure to cancer. They must have a method to not having their store destroyed on a daily basis. Please let me know how to keep them away....please

You do not have to put it out the night before. We simply get up the morning of pick up and put the garbage out.

Is OP exaggerating as to how early the pick up is? I'm under the impression no noisy pick ups happen before 7 am, but I could be wrong.

Newspaper on bottom of garbage bag, Full bag..cup of Clorox put bag in black bag tie and place at end of driveway. The clorox smell is the deterrent. Also rinse tuna or similar cans before putting in bag. 20 plus years. No issues. Now if neighbors would just do same or at least clean up what the critters leave it would be nice.

We have that problem as well since we are close to Evens Prairie but since I have been putting scented Dryer Sheet in the bag no problems. We also double bag putting the white bags into one big black trash bag.

Take your weekly trash and put it in a heavy duty contractor's large bag. Then spray some Raid roach killer into it, twist the top around a few times, double it over and use a plastic Ty-wrap to secure it. Once you place it at the curb, give the outside a quick spray of the roach killer . Nothing will touch it.

Smells attract animals. I rinse everything and or put in glass jars. It works. Moth balls in garbage also repels maggots.

I would say there are 2 choices. Put Garbage bags out in the morning right before collection. Or use garbage cans. In the old days you could go out early with a BB gun. Ahh, the good old days.
