View Full Version : Walmart To Charge For Guaranteed Self-Checkout
Pugchief

Walmart will begin charging people an extra fee if they want to use their self-service checkout.
Those that want to take their sweet old time and scan and bag their own products will now have to purchase a Walmart+ subscription, which is around $99 for the entire year. Some Walmart locations have already started enacting the new policy, with many on social media not happy with the change or the absurdness that one has to now pay even more just to bag their own products!

The self checkout at Colony is already insane as they don't have enough cashiers. This would be enough to make me not shop there anymore, not that I go often anyway.

Seems like a self-correcting issue: reduce the manned checkouts then drive people back to them resulting in longer lines. People will vote with their feet - I know I will.

Walmart seems to have a very odd business plan trying their hardest to alienate customers. First self check out itself was an affront, then inadequate space for the merchanise at check out, then competing with the walmart staff with their large carts hogging the aisles fulfilling online orders and now extra charge for using the self checkout . I think they must be trying to push us out of the store and into online ordering.

That's fake news started on Tik Tok and other social media. Walmart has a $98 annual membership program (similar to Amazon) and corporate is allowing store managers to experiment with special lanes for annual membership holders, some are experimenting with fewer self-checkout lanes and more traditional checkouts and some are experimenting with self-checkout lanes designated as 10 items or fewer. I like to use the self-checkout lanes, even when there are no open stations, they quickly open up. One can count on Walmart to keep pace with what works, they aren't going to impliment changes that affect their customer traffic in the long run. What works in one market may not work in another; that seems like a smart strategy.

The idea was to reduce costs by getting rid of staff. This is a direct result of minimum wage - computers are cheaper to employ per hour, don’t have sick leave, holidays etc. But its a false economy… the people on low wages can’t work so end up claiming more benefits & suffer worse health… end result… the money I may have saved at the till ends up going in increased taxes….ergo sum and taking to nth degree - does society actually benefit? I continue to use tills in UK & US for no other reason than to ensure the low paid keep their jobs….

I LOVE self check out and the big reason is I can memorize all the prices without trying so it's fun to check my memory. Plus I can load the bags the way I want. I never go to a cashier anymore. But then again I don't cheat. According to statistics too many do.

Good joke! It’s true that a lot of people using these self-service checkouts everywhere seem to both think and move in slow motion. They remind me of sloths. The scary thing is that they also drive cars, and their reaction times are exceedingly slow.

Too many self check customers are not scanning all their items. Theft has soared causing heavy shrink losses to retailers with self checkouts. Many retailers are now doing away with self check. We, the customers pay for this theft as retailers have to raise prices to cover their losses. I for one am happy to see self check out go away.

But only partly false. Not charging extra for self checkout unless....
If the stores have the option to close some or all self checkouts then it could happen that the only self checkouts left open are those for Walmart+ members. In that case, whether you want to phrase it this way or not, the customers would have had to pay extra to use the self checkouts. Even if other self checkouts were open, if I am in the self checkout line and head to those that are reserved I am going to be told that I am not allowed to use them because I have not paid extra.
So maybe a glass half-full/half-empty situation: not as bad as the headline made it sound but not entirely false either.

Walmart is one of the biggest differences between government and capitalism. Now since there is a big supply of their jobs they can not adapt at the demand side. Years ago hated going there. All other stores have/had a conveyor belt and Walmart had the small unloading area. Personally hate to using the self checkout of fear that I will not scan an item and some overzealous security guard will go out of his way to justify his job.

Cool. Brings back another "childhood" memory. Part of my Winn Dixie job in high school was filling in as a "checker". This subject also reminds me that one of my daughters was on the phone with me recently while the grocery person was loading her online order into the back "hatch". They apparently never even interacted. Mind boggling to me. Reminds me of my lack of understanding of how tipping has evolved in this country. I think I might have twice received a quarter after helping someone out with their groceries during those years. There's never been a faster bag boy than I in my prime. . . :-)

That’s easy to say unless there aren’t any registers open with a cashier. Or the one register that does have a cashier has a very long line. When that happens to me, I don’t return to that store. A particular CVS and Sprouts are both on that list.

First self check out itself was an affront, then inadequate space for the merchanise at check out, then competing with the walmart staff with their large carts hogging the aisles fulfilling online orders and now extra charge for using the self checkout . I think they must be trying to push us out of the store and into online ordering.
It may "seem" like that to some of us, but a wildly successful business like WM sure doesn't have a track record of mistakes or misjudgments. I would make a considerable bet that ALL of the variables were put into a matrix and MBA"s covered every possible result: drop in weekly/monthly sales, social media "screaming", people vowing to never step foot in a WM again, and some keep the vow, for 3 months, 6 months, and the initial drop in sales is quickly recovered (like the number of people who vowed to never buy Anheuser Busch again) PLUS a bonus of a billion, maybe more, when those same people give in and buy a card that allows them the quick in and out for about $8 a month. Don't think that all of our outrage, and "vows" was not "baked into the cake" from the beginning of this revenue enhancing plan ! Who would ever have thought it was a "brilliant idea" when they sat around in the board room of Costco, B.J.'s, Sam's club and said, "Let's CHARGE people for the privilege of coming into our store instead of having to beg customers; we can simply tell them it's a "club". Often we look only through out own bank of experiences and circumstances, but most corporations see the "big picture". Guess we'll see soon !

Let s look at Lowe's...what terrible incidents with only one or no cashier while we, the customers have to wait in line for self check out lanes...difficult to find a helper related to products that Lowe's or Walmart. Home Depot has self check out lanes with a plenty of helpers. Ace Hardware still uses check out cashiers with a plenty of helpers around. Chas
Love love love Ace Hardware. Seems no matter what city or state you are in, the employees are THE BEST. Apparently (?) it can't be only excellent employee training, they must have a nation wide policy, even though individually owned, that they do not hire lazy, disinterested, sarcastic, "sour puss" faced, or otherwise sub parr employees ! Is that even possible ? Is it even "allowed" ? LOL !

The self checkout at Colony is already insane as they don't have enough cashiers. This would be enough to make me not shop there anymore, not that I go often anyway.
What I heard was this is for only the area in the country that is having problems with thief. As you know FL will prosecute you if you steal from anywhere unlike places like California that you can still up to $900 and nothing happens so this is what happens when you allow your state to run amok.

Who in their right mind would pay to check out their own products. Don’t believe this thread

Reading if fundamental folks. Walmart is not charging extra for those that want to use self checkout. They are reserving a station or two for those who are Walmart members. Here is the article.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/walmart-limiting-self-checkout-but-it-s-not-exclusive-to-subscribers-fact-check/ar-BB1jYpqI#:~:text=No%20need%20to%20pay%20to%20use%2 0Walmart%20self-checkout,its%20Spark%20delivery%20service%2C%20USA %20TODAY%20previously%20reported.
Thank you. Again someone reads half an article, jumps to conclusions and then throws it out to everyone to cause a stir

I agree! I feel like I'm actually doing Walmart a favor since I'm not a paid employee and they opt to have 2 checkers working about every time I shop. I am not going to pay for PLUS and get less! Trust me, I don't mind using self check-out however I really don't like someone about 3" away from me because I look like a criminal.... more like a normal person that they feel comfortable to confront! I'll go elsewhere, was never a fan of Walmart but accepted it when I moved here. The 'crime' doesn't only come from SCO, people are walking out of the store with their carts FULL of merchandise not purchased.....

It's funny, when these stores went to self scan, what did they think was going to happen ? These CEO's must be from Harvard.

I went to Lowes in Wildwood yesterday afternoon and they did not have any cashier lanes open. Only self checkout.

So it turns out to be fake news, no surprise. The truth of the matter is that it is academic because the future of shopping is already active in Britain where there are no cashiers, no self-checkout, no lineups and certainly no theft. Check out (no pun intended) https://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=16008589011 the Amazon Go store which is new kind of corner store.

You can buy almost everything sold in the stores you mentioned from Amazon and get it within a day or two, and usually for a lower price. I rarely visit those stores anymore. Note that the Lowes in Wildwood is a smaller store than the one in Lady Lake and they often do not have what you need in stock. I went there once and couldn't even buy a hacksaw.

FAKE NEWS...not true at all. But, please...believe it if you want. I'll get a closer parking spot and get in/out faster!!!

FrayedEnd Snopes says: Partially true.
Walmart may, at peak times, only allow Walmart + subscribers and their delivery people to use self checkout. So if it is jam packed in there you may need to use a register. But it won't be to use self checkout anytime. As the thread title says, only for guaranteed checkout.

I believe that Walmart is charging more at the self checkouts because those stealing merchandise PREFER the self-checkout because it is easier to scam.

They're not charging more at the self checkouts. I do most of my grocery shopping at Walmart. I prefer the self checkout, because I'm faster and more efficient than the cashiers they have (I worked in retail 40 years, so I'm actually trained to be good at it). Once in awhile an incorrect price shows up, so I press the help button, an employee shows up within a minute, verifies that it's the wrong price on their little ipod, and adjusts the price. It's not a common thing, but it does happen sometimes. If it happens on the self-checkout, it's also happening on the cashier's register. It's a system error, not an intentional scam.

I’m thinking just for fun, I’ll go to Walmart self checkout line and open an umbrella to hide from the cameras, but scan everything and pay for everything. Can you imagine the security officer going bonkers collaring me only to learn there’s no fraud? Don’t think I’d even make it past the door.
