Some years ago, there was a post here on trapping rodents around houses with those black box type trap.
I remember one guy said he had 6 of these (Picture below) around his birdcage and he
said they worked great.

I had mine for 2 years now and after checking them every couple weeks, there was always evidence of rodents chewing a small bits and pieces off the bait, no big deal until lately.

The problem now after just a couple days of checking, every piece of bait is gone.

What could possible be small enough to clean out the whole trap besides rats, mice, or snakes.

My neighbor suggested squirrels maybe?

Any ideas?

When we found 2 dead rats in our backyard we found out our neighbor a few houses down the street was using the black bait traps in your photo. When the rodents eat the bait they won’t immediately die in your yard. I would ask your neighbors if they have found any dead rodents in their yards and then you will know what type of critter is eating your bait.

Mother nature will take care of them, just keep your property clean and let them run they will be seen from above and below, snakes, birds, cats, will kill and eat them.

Is the bait something that would attract squirrels? They'll chew through just about anything to get food.
