View Full Version : Address numbers on house

I’ve noticed that in Moultrie Creek, the developer has gone back to using metallic decal stickers in some of the windows of the new homes to denote the home’s address. Is this a cost-saving measure, or is there some other reason I’m unaware of?

Here's my guess. If a bad storm comes through and high winds blow away your custom with your house number, dog's name etc., the numbers in the window will remain for emergency services.

I think the OP is referring to the house numbers installed by the builder, not the custom signs installed by the homeowner. My house number is attached to the concrete wall above the garage door.

Mine is nailed to the facia above the garage door. Could a cost saving or maybe they could not get enough to be consistent in a neighborhood, so they just did that...

Probably a construction/contractor delivery/work ID!?
Not intended to be the finished house address location/quality.

Yep!!!! Much cheaper for stickers than the letters that go above your garage door. I swear every year the builder is getting cheaper and cheaper on what they provide. If you look at the pictures of homes online unless it's a custom home most bathrooms don't have a shower doors, and some don't even have curtain rods. They don't even put screens on the lanai's anymore.

Is there any choice in this return to normal buyer’s market? Upgrades, surfaces, fixtures…everything needs to be accounted for just so the bean counters can be happy.

House (PV)in 2007 Caroline & (PV)2010 Pennacamp both the reflective numbers in the front window. Post sign had names no address.
2012 cottage Fernandina same reflective numbers front window. No post sign.
2009 Designer Duval same reflective number front window.
We hated the tacky numbers in front windows asking number of residents, and sales staff if we could remove them and put numbers on garage face of houses. No don’t remove, but no reason given.
Finally in 2014 at LSL market night Fire and Sumter sheriff department had a booth. Asked why numbers shouldn’t be removed. Answer: they are reflective so we can find houses easier in the dark. Although there isn’t a rule not to remove….Please leave them up, it easier for us to find you.
So new build in 2022 no reflective numbers in front window only numbers over garage. They are metal, not reflective.
So what changed. Why go back to reflective numbers.
My guess is the Fire/Leo department will have the correct answer.

It is that way because of Public Safety. The reflective numbers on the front window are there to save your life... VPSD and local LEO use these to find you in the dark..

Then, I guess they don’t care about finding anyone in my neighborhood. I’ve never seen these reflective numbers anywhere. Mine are on my house by the garage door and I don’t have one hanging on my lamp post by choice ( wind has blown it off too many times) :)

You won’t find any of the decal stickers on the homes in Richmond, or many other of the villages built between 2020-2023 - Moultire Creek is mostly decal stickers, but a few patio villas have the numbers above the garage.

Our house was built in 1997. They did not put-up curtain rods, shower doors, lanai screens, or permanent addresses. I guess they were unable to predict people's taste back then.

They were using the stickers LONG before the even began building homes in the South...
We're North of 44 and every village around us has stickers.
My wife hated them, so we removed them and replaced them with screw in black aluminum numbers we bought as ACE. We put them vertically on the column at the entrance to the house. Very easily seen from the street.

Unfortunately, much of the landscaping blocks the reflective stickers.
The tree that the developer put in did just that on our home.

I don't understand why, say, 6 houses on a street can't be numbered 1 to 6, not in the 2 thousands. Wouldn't it be easier for EMT to find.

It's very complicated, but The Villages has nothing to do with assigning the house numbers. It is done by the local Government and in accordance with the USPS standards.

Something against walk in showers? Many recently built hotels are going tubless and using walk in showers. Curtain rods and styles are personal so why provide them?

I bought my new home in September in Lake Denham. I have the black numbers above my garage doors. I have a walk in shower, so no need for a door. My lanai is screened. I also had a shower curtain rod in my second bath shower but I admit it was a useless piece of garbage. It would not tighten against the wall and I had to buy a better one. Heard the same complaint from most of my neighbors. They all agreed the developer should just stop buying them because they all go in the trash anyhow.

I just can't imagine living a life that includes hopping onto any opportunity to show contempt for "The Developer". Why would anyone be upset that someone else's home has stickers rather than metal numbers. Could someone please explain.

 My house is 24 years old and Mark Morse still drops by from time to time (if he can't make it he sends one of his sisters) to trim the landscaping ...... it was in my contract.
The contract that promised me Katie Bells and Hacienda restaurant/pool for life. Wish I had asked them to put in the 2 DQ's that were here when I purchased. :icon_wink:

Don’t worry….There are no lanais without screens, there are no curtain rods because all the windows have blinds.

I assumed they meant shower curtain rods. Never seen a new construction home that had window curtain rods. In Massachusetts most don't even have blinds included, nor bathroom mirrors, no even cabinet hardware.

With El Niño, developer realized they need to divert money from house numbers and shower curtain rods to executive golf course maintenance.

If you draw a line from north to south, all houses on east/west roads that fall on that line should be the same number.
Same for a east to west line.
Helps find houses when not knowing the area.

Usually and made be mandated by Fire Code each home must have street number on home to get a Certificate of Occupancy.
“ Every structure assigned an address must have the address posted in a visible location. Posting your address correctly will: Help Emergency Responders protect you and your family in the event of an emergency. By making sure your address is visible, you will allow Emergency Responders to locate you quicker.”

I can’t imagine what standard that might be when some of the houses are built so close together you couldn’t put up a tent in between them, but their numbers are not only not consecutive but sometimes far apart. The US post seems to have missed the boat here:
“Regardless of method, the key to any housing number system is simplicity and uniformity. That way, visitors and new citizens can easily grasp the city's layout. Additionally, services like mail delivery or food delivery become vastly more efficient when they can plan out their routes.”

Thanks--28 years as a first responder and it is so frustrating to search for unit numbers of properties when they are not uniformly located. Is it on the mailbox, the curb, over the garage, to the left of the front door, etc. Maybe not so much of an issue with our homes being so close together but the numbers are not for the Village mail carriers--they are for the first responders (and maybe guests)...
(In some condos up north they also put unit numbers on the back of the homes over the slider in case emergency entry needs to be made or for LEO response for a break-in to set up a perimeter on target home.)
I like having them uniform...change it up and get creative with the (secondary) lamppost sign...

Putting them on both sides of condos and townhomes is also very helpful in one's application for search warrants and to prevent the costly mistake of serving a warrant on the wrong domicile.

I bought a new house in Hillsborough 10 years ago and it had the reflective house numbers on the front window so that is not new. They are still there BTW. To be honest I don't see much difference in the spec homes they build now vs 10 years ago exept the tilt up concrete, which is pretty nice. I don't like how some are so much closer to the road, but that gives more back yard space so oh well. Does it suprise you that with the lovely inflation and high interest rates they may have to cut a few things out to sell houses?

Don't emergency services use GPS? My house is findable that way. Those reflective numbers in the front window are tacky looking. We removed our when we moved in.
