I'm surprised something called the "Gourmet Club" would even know a restaurant such as Sonny's.
Some of them aren't too bad for what they are, but I once ate at the Sumter Landing location and it was scary bad.

They will be closing permanently next Tuesday.
Please forgive the staff, they just got told Saturday. So if your server is drunk/stoned (as the outdoor bartender is today), that is probably why.
The food was awful, the staff was ....
I don't want to cast aspersions on my bartender that day, but the above post from another thread seems like an accurate characterization ... other than it was going on, long before today.

We went to the one on I think it was on 301/441/27 but I could be wrong (it was in that town before Ocala) and I have to say it was several notches below that of standard BBQ. We told the server and she swore that their meat was smoked but it was clear no smoke ring was evident.
Now we go to Mission when we want BBQ. I bought an additional pound of brisket and that served two of us for two days - succulent, tender, with a delicious red ring on it. At about seven dollars a serving you can’t beat it.

There is another question that should be asked, is the restaurant closing because of quality or due to rising rents.
In N.Y.C. there are restaurants almost on every block, some are good, and some are bad, but most close due to rising rents.
If it is the latter, the very restaurant you love might be next.

Ive never been but I looked at the menu....the $6 sandwich is a Wednesday special. The rest of the menu is pretty uniform (price wise) as one would expect. Not sure if its a rent issue but previous post talked about server issues and poor quality. That's a killer for any establishment in the industry. Bad news travels fast!

Past 2 to 3 years, I'd see many tables never cleaned after guests left, still sitting there after I was gone.
Chaos. Wait staff seemed always seemed to be in a state of confusion.
Never had a manager cruise by and ask how was everything. OK, the guy/gal should be busy bussing tables.
Too cheap to hire a busboy.
IMAO; wait staff should never remove a glass or plate from a table, nor clean a table.
Let the wait staff give the best service possible.
Many local restaurants could use this advice. Yeah, laugh.
I was a busboy. My job was to bust my butt, especially preparing tables for the next guests. While guests were there; never an empty plate on a table - especially on the edge.
I'd get tips from the waitresses (yeah, they were all female - obsolete term? - ToughS)
Hit and miss food. Sometimes good, sometimes not. Sometimes hot, sometimes cold. Sometimes what I'd consider too greasy to eat, sometimes, not.
Got a pitcher of beer recently. I could feel the pitcher was hot from the dishwasher. Mugs, not freezing cold - err, not even refrigerated.
Mortal sin.

Davis Square sure isn't what it was, when I was a boy in Somerville.
A friend owned the Rose Bud property (I think I remember the name right) for a zillion years.
I once walked into Jumbo's in Teele Sq and Burton Cummings was the entertainment. Probably 30 years ago.

I knew it was inevitable on TOV to have a snarky reply about the salad bar. It happens every time. I have the same reaction when I see portly patrons chow down on steaks or pizza.
There are two primary reasons why some people enjoy salad bars
1. There are many fat laden items to choose from.
or
2. My reason. There are far more healthy items such as greens and vegetables to choose from than on the menu.
In the case of lettuce there are only 100 calories per pound. If I tried to eat that much lettuce from a menu the bill would probably be four or five times more.
I will confess though that on rare occasions I will go to an all you can eat restaurant and pig out. Then the Derisiveness is deserved.

Thus the reason they sell a $6 meal.
I disagree that it’s much too costly....I know many BBQ establishments, not franchises, family owned that not only do it ‘low and slow’ but do so very competitively on pricing. Granted theyre in my home state but even here in FL I can guarantee there are many that do it sans ‘boiling and pressure cooking’. But as others stated many times....you can’t change people’s minds on authenticity. Some think Olive Garden is representative and some think Sonny’s is. They’re not

They had a great salad bar before COVID. They never brought it back so I will not miss them.
It has a large bar so it will not be empty for long.
I also miss their salad bar. I think more sonny's will close if not close all of them

We went to Sonny's twice. The food was average (at best) and the place was empty, both times. The waitstaff was nice, but we never saw a reason to return...
Food is ok but sandwiches we find are rather skimpy. Willy Jewels has better brisket

Ate there many times. Always had great meal and service. Smells great as you pass by too... will miss the option.
There is another option for BBQ in LSL. This is an unpopular opinion but ......... I LOVE Cody's. They have the best Baby Back Ribs in the area. Yes, I have tried Oakwood ribs and Cody's is on parr if not better than Oakwood. Pass by Cody's and you will get the same aroma of BBQ as Sony's. I never thought Sonny's was all that great. Will not miss Sonny's.

You are 100% right. Oakwood doesn't smoke ribs, they take boiled ribs and grill them over a flame. That is NOT BBQ.
Terrible.
:BigApplause:
Is that the way Cody's makes their ribs too?

A large group went to Codys about 6 months ago.
Took forever for waitress to take order and than 45 minutes later nothing came out, Asked waitress and she pretty much said not my problem. Found a manager and 15 or so minutes got our food. Ordered unlimited soup and salad, food was good but still waiting for the unlimited part.
Than could not find waitress for checks. We all paid in cash as we did not trust waitress with our cards. She took money never did come back with any change.
Looked around for a manager could not find one and finally we just left all of us deciding never again.
Have seen quite a few of these stories on here and other places.

Sadly, once @ Cody's, we had a similar experience. We sat for 40 minutes, waiting for a waitress to take our order, then another 40 minutes, waiting for our food.
Yes, they were severely understaffed, and yes, when she finally arrived, the waitress was extremely apologetic.
The burgers were good, the weather and music were nice, so it wasn't a total loss.
The other 2-3 times we've been there, there were ZERO problems...

At least you had an apologetic waitress, given what we had with a nasty useless one turned us off from ever going back

If you ever have that issue again...you should keep a bag of coins....preferably pennies in your car (Kramer inspired) and go back in and drop them on the table.

I'm not surprised!!! Never was exceptionally busy. Mallory has a full rack of ribs for their specialty, while Sonny's onle had half
Went to Sonny’s, admittedly a while back, and the chicken was severely undercooked and the ribs were just baked with sauce poured on. Yuck. Not surprised it’s out of business.

In your place, I would have sent dear wife home with friends and gone back to the front desk to introduce myself? Me, "HI! MY NAME IS KAREN, AND I NEED THE MANAGER. NOW! AND HAVE HIM BRING OUR PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A WAITRESS! NO, I PREFER TO STAND RIGHT HERE AND TALK TO THESE FOLKS WHO ARE WAITING, ABOUT OUR EXPERIENCE TODAY. THIS IS MY INSIDE VOICE! -----". 😠😡🤬👹

Been to a lot of restaurants in our life and do think that was the worst experience we have ever had.'
Perhaps should have gone to a Cody website and told them.

Pass on good info along with bad every place you can. Sometimes a bad experience, or good, for that matter, is a one off. But usually it is a sign that standards are getting lax, and poor service, food and sanitation is going to become more common. This is a good first stop to warn your neighbors to beware. Cody 's website next. Corporate may or may not want to know, but they need to know.
