View Full Version : Loud Mufflers (Oxymoron)

Why do so many teenage senior citizens have to have loud mufflers on their cars? My neighbor wakes me up at 6:05 every morning. It seems that whenever I am enjoying a meal outdoors someone has to drive by and almost break my eardrums. It would be just as easy for them to hang a sign on their rear bumper saying “I am a jerk”

There was a thread about 3 weeks ago, about this subject. It didn't specifically start out about the "teenage senior citizens" who think have a loud vehicle is cool ... but I made sure it got to that point :bigbow:

I asked what the attraction was and why anyone would think it's "cool" to have an automobile or motorcycle, loud enough to annoy most anyone. They all ran for the hills and didn't offer any justification.

Boys being boys .... 50+ years after actually being a "boy".

This is about motorcycles, but same theory. https://youtu.be/ipDmsxQVxIM

Only 2 kinds of people own Harley-Davidsons.

1%'ers and wannabe posers. That coming from someone who's owned 6 of them.

They do nothing well. Chrome, glitter and noise.

At least I was always upfront about it.

It has nothing to do with being cool. Personally, I think it is done deliberately to annoy other people. I put them in the same category as those who play loud music in their car with the windows open, bring dogs everywhere they go, bring children into stores who do nothing but scream and annoy everyone in the store, and those who hang wind chimes in their yard to spread noise to their neighbor's property. If you complain about it, they act as if you are the problem.

I've only encountered 1 person with a loud vehicle here, too bad he lives a few houses down and he has both a Harley and one of the 'hot rod' golf carts. I have to admit I don't know him but I have built an opinion of the kind of person he is. I think passing judgement on someone without giving them a fair chance is just plain wrong, in this case I'm ok admitting that I've done something wrong.

Most of the loud vehicles I here are landscape and contractor trucks. Harley's do get a pass as they sound great and a few muscle cars with loud exhausts can be tolerated.

When I was about 18, in the early 70s, I had a friend who was cool. He was like Fonzie-cool.
I had on old Chevy sedan, maybe an Impala, but not a hot-rod. The muffler fell off, as they do. I told my friend I was going to put on a glass pack, or maybe a Thrush. He told me, No way, just use a regular muffler, you will be sorry if you use a glass pack. He was cool, so I did what he said. As time went by, I appreciated that quieter, standard muffler.

Light turns green. Mustang sits there. Revs engine, makes lots of noise. Still sits there. Other lane traffic is flowing. More loud exhaust. Does a burnout to finally move ahead. Unmarked PD behind him pulls over Mustang.
Now watch insurance triple for a reckless driving ticket.

"Loud pipes save lives," and we just love the sound of Harleys!! However, my husband backs his bike down the driveway and I push it to the farthest point around our surrounding houses to try and help minimize the volume on that AMAZING start-up sound if he's/we're leaving on an early ride. If y'all don't know about The Village Nomads, it's a riding group for all bikes/trikes and they ride every Wednesday and Saturday morning leaving from Colony.

not @ all!! bikers on Harley's i've ever known are,: patriots, gentlemen to ladies who respect their bikes (lol), and very helpful to anyone. yes, i mean those big hairy mean looking ones sometimes have a pet poodle @ home! i saw 1 guy stop his bike in traffic to help a kid cross the street in NewHaven. no lie!!! :D bikers on rice burners tend to be: inconsiderate, passing me on right AND left doing over 90mph. no offense to those who own them, it's just my exp of being on the roads of the Eastern seaboard.

It's all about that biker at the expense of everyone else.

To heck with anyone else. Disturb the peace & enjoyment of hundreds of other people. Backing a bike down a driveway means the bike rider KNOWS the noise is disruptive and wrong, otherwise they'd fire it up in their driveway and let it run awhile. (after all the neighbors might ask a loud biker to stop disturbing the peace, and who wants accountability for being so rude and selfish?). So sneak out of your neighborhood and then let it rip. Impose that unwanted loud noise on every other person within miles!!! That's OK, right? Why should hundreds of other people not have there lives disrupted? The bike rider is so much more important than everyone else. Spread it for miles and impose it on everyone within earshot! They're just strangers. It's exhilarating and powerful - right? Self important. Oh you are so tough & powerful, and more important than anyone else. Remember what a loud biker wants is much more important than the peace and enjoyment of hundreds of other people. It's all about the person riding that bike at the expense of everyone else. Vroom. Vroom.

we just love the sound of Harleys!!

Harley Davidsons don't have to sound like log trucks, their riders just like it that way because they want to act tough and be noticed. They are the height of 1930's technology gone wrong, lets say stuck in time and performance. This is coming from someone who in his younger days did install a few sets of drag pipes, stoker kits and piles of chrome on my own bikes, thankfully I came to my senses in my early 30s and left that mess behind for the teenagers and infirmed of mind. I also dig the older technology, my tractor is a 1941 and my Dodge is a 1942 design. I for one strongly dislike loud pipes on sports cars, redneck pickups (I have one currently) log trucks (read that as Harleys) as well as rice grinders when ridden in public. Put them on a drag strip or other race track and I'm happy to hear the noise. I attend drag and drives and thoroughly enjoy that time and group. The car/bike community has consistently been the best group of people I've ever encountered.

not @ all!! bikers on Harley's i've ever known are,: patriots, gentlemen bikers on rice burners tend to be: inconsiderate

I've spent a lot of time around bikers of all kinds, much like the rest of society you will find good and bad in each group. In fact, I've known some that were great people until the moment they throw a leg over and some that are the opposite. As I sit and think about it I'd say I've known the extreme in each direction as biker friends or acquaintances.

Mod, you will be happy to know I left out several colorful and inappropriate werds in my descriptions above, I'm doing better :eclipsee_gold_cup:

A lotta folks do it, and don't forget the 5kof chrome parts they buy to replace the factory parts, they end up in the pile next to the factory pipes. BUT, the chrome parts do serve an important purpose, when they fall off in the ditch they are much easier to find. :a040:

We rode our "loud Harleys" to the Florida National Cemetery on Sunday and placed hundreds of flags on gravesites of veterans. We are riding them back this Sunday to take the flags down.
Toy runs, rides to support various charitable organizations, helping veterans in need, etc, Harley riders are always there.

No excuse on a car. They like the attention.

I moved from a farming community where everyone went to work before the sun most days. I had to adjust my sleep schedule cause there's no way I'm complaining about someone going to work.

This problem, like so many others, will NEVER be solved as long as the local police turn their ears to the noise.

Which by-the-way, states loud after-market exhaust is illegal, on any motor vehicle on national highways.

For years tree/bunny huggers have been reminding the public about water pollution, air pollution, space pollution,
but no one talks about NOISE pollution until your windows fallout from the cycle or modify ventage car going by.

Where I come from, the saying was "The louder the bike, the shorter the penls." :loco: :pepper2::clap2:

It was allowed when geeks brought Harley’s thinking they was cool finely in in charge. Rules have changed since 1965.

Is sensitivity to sound a sign of dementia?
Sensory issues - These are often under reported and under recognised as being a symptom of dementia. People may experience issues with depth perception and spatial awareness, sensitivity to noise, or notice changes to taste and smell.
I had sensitivity to LOUD sounds at age 25 and I certainly had no dementia then. Many sound experts say that loud noises can be tiring to everyone, Although many will say that it doesn't affect them. As a child I had many ear infections and that could explain my sensitivity. When the local firetrucks turn on their sirens close to me and other people, I notice that I will cover my ears and they will NOT. Musicians playing loud music are notorious for having ear damage. Same for people working around large aircraft engines and also loud factories.

Here in The Villages, the commercial lawn mowers are often louder than the motorcycle, cars, and trucks. I can get annoyed by lawnmowers 2 and 3 houses down from me. I will turn up my TV or music to block it out. A really aware residential area would FORCE the use of electrical commercial lawn mowers. I don't expect that here in my lifetime.

The loud pipes on motorcycles SAVING lives - may have been true in 1950 before automobile A/C when cars rode around with their windows DOWN. But, today the windows are up and sealed tight letting in very little sound. So, the LOUD motorcycle noise has NO FUNCTION. It just got handed down for decades with no reality. It has become an excuse and it hurts the hearing of the motorcycle rider and annoys people on the street, all the while providing NO additional safety for the motorcyclist.

There’s a YouTube channel where a group of people get together....in the dozens....and parade into subdivisions and neighborhoods of ‘Karens’ with their classic and modified hobby cars. All the other neighbors friends, families and children line the streets in solidarity of the organizers. I will post the link at some point.

IMO....if it’s without malice, I have no issue with it. If someone was idling and holding court in front of my house....different story.

Way back when I was 21 I drove a souped-up lowrider 1968 VW bug around. After I replaced the stock fan housing with an aluminum one to "pretty up" the engine it began to have a whistling sound while driving. Perhaps because of the hole I drilled for the clutch cable to go through. A co-worker thought that I had upgraded the performance and asked if I had "gearing." Hmmm, I liked that assessment. I never minded the attention at a few stoplights, but I was also wary of driving through the quiet neighborhoods during late nights/early mornings. Ever since I changed vehicles a few years later I never missed the sound. These days I don't want to have my car attracting any noisy attention to myself and I have embraced having a quieter engine. Apparently not true for some.

The saying goes, LOUD PIPES SAY LIVES!!!

From an ATL motorcycle attorney.....

What Do Studies Say About The “Loud Pipes Save Lives” Motto?

I found a study that studied this phrase and whether the loudness of the pipes, and exhaust pipes of the bike, lead and correlate to fewer motorcycle wreck events.

They found no, it is an absolute myth, and the reason is interesting. The main reason why it’s a myth is because most motorcycle wrecks do not occur where a motorist is striking the biker from the rear.

This is because head-on collisions minimize the effect of the loudness of your exhaust pipes, for obvious scientific reasons: your exhaust pipes are pointed behind you.

The noise is going backward, not to the sides or the front, so it’s less likely that the motorists that are going to potentially wreck with you aren’t going to hear you coming.

The second reason this is a myth is that most motorists have their windows up. They’re not driving convertibles, they typically have at least the radio on, they are talking with someone in the vehicle, they’re on the phone, etc. They’re distracted, and they’re not likely to hear the noise from your motorcycle.

I posted the Top 3 Links on Google, related to actual tests. There's no question, the saying is complete and utter BS, but of course, the proponents don't want to read facts.

I'm lucky enough, to live in the center of Laconia Bike Week, which begins 5 days from now. Before the week is over, we'll have 3 deaths, at least 6 serious injuries, and be bombarded 24 hours a day, by noise and squealing tires.

Laconia Bike Week is dying an increasingly faster death. In 2004, we attendance was estimated at 375,000. Last year's "100th Anniversary", drew less than 100,000 visitors. It was just a blip on the radar screen. Hotels had rooms available and restaurants weren't crowded.

The Poser Bikers have worn out their welcome most everywhere. The "Loud Pipes Saves Lives" slogan is one of the major reasons.

We're also home to one of the largest chapters of the Hell's Angels, who happen to own much of the land around Weirs Beach.

I'm sure sure what most of those guys do in their "spare time", but when they're riding, most of them are riding RoadGlides with full face helmets and quiet exhausts ... and laughing at all the wannabes that show up and buy "I support 81" T-Shirts for $30.

They also messed up Laconia when it was dropped from 2 weeks to 1 week in duration. Agree...the week is a shell of its former identity. Don’t even get me started with Myrtle Beach missteps on their bike weeks!

Charlie St. Clair who's been Executive Director of Laconia Bike Week for 20+ years has taken Laconia Motorcycle Week from 400,000 Vistors to 100,000 ... this year will probably be announced at 75,000 and really be closer to 50,000.

I was VP of the local/Host HOG Chapter for a bit and had to deal with Charlie (who was also a state rep. Of course, in NH, state reps don't get paid and you always get what you pay for.)

Imagine how safe learning to properly ride would be.

Loud pipes are for attention. Harley Davidsons perform better with some back pressure.

There is a reason Cobra Exhaust markets slip on pipes with the model name "Neighbor Hater."

They hardly "perform" under any circumstances.

My Suzuki SV650 could blow the doors off my FLSTS and my BMW would leave them both in the dust.

My dad told me in his early life he rode a Indian motorcycle that had a decal attached on the gas tank, which in itself was unusually for any warning labels back in the 1920's.

The decal read: "If you abuse me, I will kill you."

interesting.

I had to laugh at your post because as a young man (18-20 years old) I had a fairly loud muffler on my first car - 1954 Oldsmobile four barrel rocket 88 engine car. I even got a ticket for that muffler! I got married shortly after the ticket and never had another loud muffler the rest of my life. Young and immature! Seniors with loud mufflers? “You can’t be young forever but you can be immature for the rest of your life”. Anonymous

It’s a shame to hear that. Why one would have to be deemed ‘immature’ to continue a hobby or preference for....what is clearly a love for a piece of American pride, workmanship and dominance at a point in its history? It’s amazing how some on this forum can reconcile on some subject thread topics and can’t see the forest through the trees on another. Just because you (generalization) don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s wrong, ‘immature’ or inconsiderate. I find the noise coming off of a pickle ball court more offensive than I do some random American muscle cars emit at times. So if one lives next to a pickle ball court....should they deem participants ‘immature’ or are they just trying to remain relevant and youthful? -Anonymous

I have no problem with a Harley The noise isn’t ear splitting. I hope riders don’t start at 6:00 a.m. I am talking about the guy with a homemade hot rod who circles around the square with a 90 decibel and makes it backfire every 30 seconds while I am trying to enjoy my morning coffee.

You don't like the sound my bike makes? I don't like the sound your yapping little ankle-biter dog makes. Turn down your hearing aids!

Yeah, my sentiments exactly......... I hate yappy, ankle-biters also (and I am a dog lover)........ but, man, give me the roar of a loud Harley or Vette or any sports car....... let 'em roar........ and I am an 86 yr old female.........We had a Harley when we built our house in TV in 2001, but decided it wasn't worth the danger of the drivers around here with the Harley, so we sold it.
Grew up with loud pipes, loud Harleys and loud music.......still roll down the windows in my car so I can hear one that goes by.

I love loud music, but not everyone appreciates my preferences. Rather than subject others to my bizarre and (often questionable) subject matter, I play my set list at home and listen with a headset. You could do the same with the sounds of roaring engines and squealing tires. Just a thought.
I have given up putting up stacks of speakers in the front yard and blasting my insanity to the world while I wash/wax the car. I quit when the neighbor lady's ears started bleeding. (Slight exaggeration)

The way these OLD codgers drive, you have to either have a loud vehicle to remind them that you are nearby, OR you have to lay on the horn when you drive around here. I have driven for years before coming here, including overseas where driving day to day is dangerous. Here, you can park in the safest part of the parking lot when shopping and come out and see scratches and dent on your vehicle. And be very careful backing up, because no one else cares OR they are sight impaired.
Regarding Harley motorcycles, I have owned them and hated loud pipes. However, it was a must to keep folks from cutting over in lanes, acting like they did not see me. I put loud pipes on my bikes so that when I was passing vehicles while I was in the left lane they would not cut into me.
If a minute of loud noise bothers you so much in the morning, try to remember back when you were already on your way to work (or at work) at 6am. Personally, I call waking at 6am, sleeping in. And try to remember that at our age, we are blessed to be annoyed at a bit of noise.
Now on to the next complaint. Maybe a complaint about dog poop, speed bumps, bad parking, gates or strong perfume? Oh, and we must not forget the heinous crime of stickers on post boxes.

Great idea! TOTV is why we HAD to move here. Oh, and for the Kool-Aide. Life here is great! And everyone is so friendly, respectful of others. None of the dogs poo or pee cause they all wear diapers. And everyone adheres to the traffic laws. Golf carts never exceed 19.8mph and, wait... For a moment I forgot that most of you live here, too.

Ok, small confession, my Ninja 6R was loud, and high pitched - not because I changed the muffler to sound like a broken lawn mower but because the motor revs high for high speeds and it is a sports bike. And I love the “natural” sound of Harleys. The way they are manufactured with no individuals putzing with them. They sound melodic to my ears. I am and always will be, a motorcycle enthusiast. But in our quiet neighborhood we got off our bikes; husband on a rumbling Lt. Turn off the engines on Odell and walk the bikes to our close (but on a quiet street ) garage. Unless they see us neighbors don’t even know we were riders.
