View Full Version : Cart vs. Car on Lower Odell Circle

There was a damaged car and an overturned golf cart in front of the Duval mail stop on Lower Odell Circle a little after noon today. The vehicles were still there about an hour later along with two police cars. The car was damged on the front passenger side corner and the cart was laying on its side facing east in the westbound lane of Odell. No information on injuries or what happened.

I heard the cart was struck from the rear by a car that driffted into the cart lane. The people in the cart were taken to the hospital. That is all I know.

Oh no. I hope the people involved are ok. If news reports become available on how they are doing, please let us know.

There is something about this in today's Sun...maybe the Local section. I've seen some crazy driving here this month. Yesterday...someone stopped in a round-about and just sitting there. Another thing was someone "blowing" a stop sign without even slowing down...just went through.

I learned today, by observing another's car, that if you approach a south bound lane gate by driving at it going north, the gate doesn't open and there's no button to push to open it......aggh it is the season!!!!

Saturday afternoon my wife and I watched four adults in a four passenger golf cart going around the roundabout by the Caroline gate on Morse Blvd, they made at least two passes around that we knew of. Apparently they could not figure out how to get back onto the cart path where we were sitting.

I don't mind sharing the cart lane with bikes, joggers, walkers etc. But the other day I was sharing it with a car. He came in off 466A on Canal. Must have thought it was a divided highway!!

For the life of me, I do NOT understand how people can do this. The golf cart paths are NOT at all like a city street. I've heard this happens quite a bit here. Some people who drive their golf-carts more than their cars tend to forget which vehicle they're in and sometimes might start to turn on the paths...have seen this happen but generally they "wake up" before it happens for real. Scarey to think about!!!!

Down near Colony...I've seen cars (well maybe one) who didn't go in the "divide" so were going the wrong way in a lane for a time...that too is scarey to observe!!

The other day, while I was driving into LSL on Canal St., a cart in front of me stopped dead in the roundabout where he shouldn't have been in the first place! I had to toot my horn to get him to move. Lifestyle visitors should be given a crash course in where their carts are NOT supposed to be! And, how to navigate the roundabouts, too. :ohdear:

on how to use traffic circles. The rules are fairly simple - traffic laws in circles are the same as those for a four way intersection. If you are entering from the right-hand lane you may go straight or using a turn signal, turn right. If you are entering in the left hand lane you may go straight, or using your turn signal make a left turn.

Making a right turn from the left lane we all understand is prohibited. Why don't people understand that making a left turn from the right lane is equally illegal and dangerous? They are putting in danger people who are obeying the law and going straight in the left lane. Several times I have had these people honk and gesture angrily at me for following the law (and incidentally the lines posted on the streets).

.

How do you make a left turn out of a traffic circle? All of the exits are on the right.

There are those who endorse the idea of cars being allowed to use the cart lanes to imitate a right turn. That is to say, as an automobile prepares to turn right, they pull over into the cart lane to do so.

I say that is just downright dangerous and a bad idea.

Funny, automobile lanes are for cars and cart lanes are for carts. Now, carts want to register and use the automobile lanes and cars want to begin using the cart lanes.

We all know what he means TH.

From his/her original vantage point they are going left (i.e. coming north up BV and you intend to take the Tall Trees entrance). You would enter the roundabout in the left lane (inner) and navigate to the tall trees entrance which is a 3/4 around in that case from their original spot.

There was a tutorial in The Sun maybe a week ago (with pictures even) on how to navigate the roundabouts. If you're going to go straight ahead you stay in left lane. If you're going to turn off the roundabout you should be in the right lane.

If you're going straight from the left lane, be VERY CAUTIOUS!
Many stay in the right lane until they turn off. This will never change.
We all have to be very very careful.

Um, no. You can go straight ahead from the right lane as well as the left lane, just as at a regular intersection. I think it is safer to go straight ahead from the right lane so you don't have to worry about the person on the right lane blocking your progress. What you cannot do is go 3/4 of the way around from the right lane. That's like making a left turn from the right lane at an intersection.

We try to make it a point to never get into a roundabout with another vehicle in the lane next to us. The allowable "right turn out of the left lane" when those in the right lane are allow to go straight scares the ________ out of us!!!

If you go to the CDD homepage you can download a copy of the Sumter County Roundabout Guide. It has some illustrations showing the proper way to navigate through the roundabouts. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Look for it at the bottom of the home page.

I know what you mean about the recurring roundabout discussions, but. . . Today we were driving west on Stillwater approaching the roundabout at Canal when we saw a car coming around the roundabout heading toward LSL. Then, they stopped in the roundabout and the car behind them had to jam on the brakes to avoid a rearender. On our way back, we were heading east on Stillwater approaching the roundabout at Morse. Because I was going to go north on Morse, I moved into the left lane. The car behind me stayed in the right lane. When traffic cleared, I went around and the car beside be went all the way around to go north on Morse as well. Imagine if I had decided to go straight into Caroline gate!

I don't know why people cannot grasp the concept of the roundabout just being a different design of a regular intersection.

Talk of The Villages is a forum for any member to ask any question at any time. To insist that one do a "search" for any particular subject would mean that every person would have to "search" every subject before they post a question.

On this forum, that isn't going to happen. If you want to know something, regardless of how many times is has been discussed before, just ask. Don't be intimidated by those who would banish you to the dismal halls of the search engine. My advice to them would be to not waste bandwith responding to a thread that you object to in the first place.

BTW, it is we who pay for this bandwidth. We have plenty of it and we are willing to share. :spoken:

I am so glad to hear that because many times I have tried to search for something before posting and haven't been able to find the previous posts that "I know I saw" before, and I am sure there are many others too! The problem is that if the words aren't EXACTLY the same as what was in the older messages they won't appear in the searches.

Sometimes it seems that folks just don't understand that they can just ignore the "same old posts" that they see every year - just like hitting the delete key on their email. No one is forced to read every post!

Fair points by both TH and kandj. The search function is imperfect - most are aware of that. Additionally, a number of members are relatively new and thus would have no recollection of having seen some of the prior threads on a particular topic.

If someone's aware of, or is able to find, prior threads on a topic, it would be helpful to the newer posters if a link to those would be posted in the new thread.

JMHO.......FWIW

Bill :)
