Golf lessons for a newbie?

We recently moved to The Villages and my wife has never played golf. She would like to get lessons from the most basic start; how to grip the club, stance etc. She would prefer lessons from a female instructor. Any suggestions or past experience anyone can share? Thanks in advance.

For the basics.................view online videos.

The grip, stance, etc., are easy to pick up.
Then have her hit some balls at the range.
If making "okay" contact, jus practice.

If not making "okay" contact.........get help.

The Villages have teaching pro's.
They have female as well.

I highly recommend The Villages new to golf school. It’s a full week of instruction ending with playing a couple of holes on a championship course with the pro. They cover everything you mentioned, as well as etiquette, how to work the ball machines, realistic expectations for new golfers, etc. I don’t know if any are taught by women but I felt very comfortable since everyone in the class was also brand new to the game. At Continental country Club off 44, Sandra Chester is a woman pro who has a pretty good reputation. While it is off campus, The Villages has developed the land on two sides of it.

Save your money and have her watch YouTube videos. Much better and you can learn a lot.Then go out to the driving range. The one behind the Walmart on 466 is perfect for beginners.

Then follow up with some one on one private lessons after spending some time on the range and executive courses. This time of year has a number of specials.

If you know how to grip a club and the basics of a swing, show her that. Get a 7 or an 8 iron and make sure it’s the right size. Take her to the range a LOT. just have her hit balls. She’ll figure out how to make it go forward and get airborne. After she’s hit lots of
balls and doing roughly the same thing every time THEN take her to a pro. This was the advice &
Harvey Penik gave his new son in law who wanted to learn. Until she is doing basically the same thing every time lessons wouldn’t be as effective and probably frustrating. Have her watch other ppl at the range too. You can learn a lot that way.

The golf academy , stay away from championship courses beginners need to practice on driving range and practice putt and chip areas.

I had never golfed before moving to The Villages. My first lessons were every day for a week from TV. It was too much all at once for a beginner. Later, I took weekly lessons at the Lady Lake driving range (Ralph Corso, but there is a female instructor there, Sandy). There was time to practice between classes & it was not overwhelming. It also cost less than half than ones from TV. (I've heard that the female instructor at Continental Country Club is very good, but have not had lessons there). I've also had individual lessons at the Oxford Driving Range which were excellent.

The driving range behind Walmart 466 also offers lessons. They have 3 former pros and they offer a variety of lessons. Five 1/2 hour lessons for $250. I don't have personal experience but have heard their instructors are good.

NEVER rely on YouTube, books, etc., as all you will do is ingrain all kinds of bad habits, bad muscle memories, because seeing the results of your swing doesn't tell you what you did wrong! And forget the spouse and get an instructor! Golf Pros can see what you are doing and make adjustments based you your age, size, fitness, etc., as well as help you to get the clubs you need at your skill level without regard to your ego or wallet.

the largest group of golfers leaving golf are women.........
Very important to give her a good introduction........or she will fall in the latter group
Not all teachers are the same, pick one for 1 lesson, if she connects with her then fine, if not find another until she feels a good one to one connection, it doesn't mean the teacher was bad, they just didn't connect. Most teachers know what they are doing, BUT, some communicate better than others with certain people. And you may even find that connection with a male teacher. Find her one,
avoid group lessons unless she just needs social contact.

Once you get her hooked, expect to spend $2,000. on golf clubs, $ 1,500. on golf clothing per year........but as they say.........a great golf experience is priceless.............:a040:

I Agree! I was new to golf and took the 5-day New to Golf class through the Villages Golf Academy. My instructor was Wade Martin and ours was a class of 5 ladies. Wade was a great teacher and very helpful. At the conclusion of the classes they arranged for us to meet early morning at a course with another instructor who walked us through the process of checking in, getting a cart if needed and took us out on the course to familiarize us with the experience and answered all of our newbie questions! This was invaluable! On top of it one of the ladies in the class and I arranged to play our first ever round of golf together and have since become good friends! The class was well worth the cost.
