What do semi retired or retired people do for extra money, just to stay busy?

Ps. My background is in respiratory care. I love my position but something a bit less stressful sounds good.

Hmmm, no need to stay busy. Every day we wake up in the Villages our biggest problem is that there are way too many things to do and the days aren’t nearly long enough.

You can do what I do, I monitor this site (I gave up on Nextdoor), and when I see someone looking for help and i think I can help I reply, after that it almost becomes word of mouth 'I know a guy'. If you are handy, there are a lot of people that can use a handyman.

There are also plenty of part-time low-wage jobs, if you want to make a few extra bucks but still maintain your current social security check amount. Places like Publix and Winn Dixie can give you just 2-3 days a week if that's all you want to work. Villagetinker's idea of doing general handyman kind of gigs is good, once people get to know you.

I know this is a good question. I don't have to work but the extra part time would be nice to throw at my health insurance premium since I'm not 65 yet. I have an accounting degree. Just monthly posting/general ledger stuff but it would be fun to put in a few hours per week.

Same here - I hit the ground running early each morning and stay busy all the way into the early evening - so many activities and not enough time! I actually have to “schedule” a few hours of “free time” each week on my calendar just to catch my breath, and do a few chores like house cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping. Staying busy in TV is not a problem.

As far as making extra money, every business in and around The Villages seems to want to hire people, so it really depends on A) what kind of work you want to do or can do, B) how many hours you want to work and C) how much you need to earn to make it seem worth the effort. As far as keeping busy, have you looked at The Villages? If you have any hobbies at all or if you're willing to try new things at all, it would take a bunch of lifetimes to run out of things to do here.

Pretty much any small job that I need done that doesn't require licensing or young bodies (roofing/gutters), I hire a Villager. Easy to find recommendations on the Facebook groups related to your Village/area.

Although there are also retired electricians, plumbers and HVAC guys living in TV that do side jobs too.

Many folks in the villages consult. Most have a career's experience in a field valuable in context of current workforce that often gets little training and often changes employers.

Part time at a Rec Center---like working at the check-in desk at one of the Fit Clubs; or front desk while entering a Rec Center; part-time at a hardware store; Publix's; etc.

If you have enterprise skills and want a good paying job, check out LinkedIn, monster, career builder, dice, and all the others. Jobs for seniors pay very well (if you have the talent they need) and all my job offers come with working remote, work from home. I pass up jobs all the time from LinkedIn that pay well over $200k if full time, well over $100k for part time, all working from home.
Personally, if I was going to work to keep busy or I needed to work for extra cash, I would take 1 of these jobs from LinkedIn or Monster compared to working for the villages for a fraction of this income.

Lol what color is your hair? Grey is less likely to find work than purple, blue or pink these days in TV. Now I have seen some Grey with pink etc. on top of the gray. So that color scheme may help get a foot in the door. Try that.

Tattoos would help got any of those? You'll need a lot of them so book some tatoo sittings early.

Attitude don't try too hard. Be real chill, not too eager. Don't care too much about committment.

Don't claim to have a great work background or experience. That's not impressive. They want trainable in 2024! You know, moldable.

1/2 /s

Best of luck, enjoy the process. :)

Handyman odd jobs are big in T V. I see rigged up with tools and equipment on golf carts all the time! Pet sitting n dog walkers too.

This is exactly where I am. Working remotely for a company back where I moved from making over $200k. The Villages was hiring for a similar position and the pay was $45k.

I guess if I was working just to keep busy the pay wouldn't matter, but my kid makes more working their part-time job between semesters at college than the typical pay here in TV.

Copy editor. I am a voracious reader and read a lot of books from a small publisher (military Sci-Fi). I connected with the publisher on a Facebook group he maintains and complained so much about grammar and formatting errors in his books that he finally asked if I wanted a job. Since then, other publishers have reached out to me as well. So, almost every day is busy reading advance copies of books and submitting edits. No pay, but some of the authors send me autographed copies of the books and I get some swag like T-shirts and the like. Full disclosure: I was chief of the publications production division of the Army Field Artillery School for several years so I'm actually qualified for the job.

The one service I need for my parents who live there is a dependable driver to and from Dr. appointments, and to possibly stay with them instead of just pickup and drop off. I'd also imagine you could make a killing pet-sitting, dog walking, and pool cleaning. Whatever you choose, being dependable is worth its weight in gold.

Don’t claim your work experience? Do you want a job that pays $20 an hr or over $200k a year? Experience got me in this arena with good paying jobs, and a lot of enterprises will pay for that experience. Young people are, let’s just say unskilled to be friendly, and corporations don’t have the time to teach them, mainly because are current generation doesn’t want to learn nor do they want to work, they don’t want to start at the bottom and work their way up the ladder, they want to start at the top. I wouldn’t hire anybody less than 40 if I had a business nowadays and I would pay my employees well for their knowledge and work ethics

I'm a retired accountant. Don't need nor want money from a paid part time job. I volunteer with AARP, at a food bank, with Sumter County and the hospital. I enjoy getting out and talking with people and helping people.
Extra money just means extra irs taxes to pay, less spontaneous travel, and no golf at the drop of the hat. I love my retired life.

Some retired folks work part time at Publix. I'm sure there are other part time jobs for shops in the area. Maybe you would enjoy a less stressful position in the medical profession. There are plenty of doctor's offices in the area. Or possibly a medical supply store.

If you don't need the extra money and just want to stay busy maybe you would enjoy volunteering your time? Such as an animal shelter or other non-profit close to your heart. Or maybe volunteering at an assisted living facility in activities? Or if you are a dog or cat lover you could start pet sitting, for an income of course.

If financial work is what you’re looking for Citizens Bank certainly seems to do a lot of business in TV. AARP and IRS need tax assistants. There are several investment forms with storefronts in TV. Coleman Prison had an accounting job listed. The State of Florida government as well as counties usually have openings sime are remote. Here’s an idd one: HSN (Home shopping network in St. pete FL) hires only FL remote customer service operators.

For healthcare, what about Visiting Angels or another home health care or in-home hospice organization? My parents needed in-home oxygen & there were oxygen equipment delivery services with trained staff who (thankfully) helped instruct me since I had no clue about any of it. What about pharmacy tech? Rehab services assistant? Healthcare seems like it should be easy.
Good Luck!

Do not think there is a huge market for 70 year old pole dancers.

A friend got married a few years ago and tried to find him a stripper for a bachelor party but that did not go well either.

Has anyone on this forum thought about advertising as a driver? How do seniors who have reached the point where they really can't drive get around especially to and from doctor appointments?

I agree that you need Iiability insurance if you are charging passengers. But, you may be able to add "rideshare" coverage to your existing auto policy. This is similar to insurance that covers Uber and Lyft drivers. Surprisingly, it may not be as expensive as you think. Driving people to doctor appointments can be a very profitable business. Some people have appointments in Ocala, Gainesville, or Jacksonville, where you can make as much as $300 to $400 or more in a few hours, especially if you need to wait for the patient to complete an appointment. There are a lot of people in The Villages who have no other choice but to pay for medical transportation. If you develop a good reputation, your service will be very much in demand.

Joe Byers. Blue Line Services: (352-391-2894).

They offer both transportation and home-watch services. I've used them for transportation, not home watch, but if they're as good at home watch as they are at transportation I'd recommend 'em in a heartbeat.
