Information you may not get from your doctor on how to interpret your metabolic test.
His book, Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity and Disease is the product of one individual’s point of view – a perspective that is not supported by the vast majority of scientific research on nutrition and metabolism. Blaming one particular food or ingredient for the obesity and chronic disease rates in America is unsubstantiated; restriction and avoidance of particular foods (especially those that are most enjoyed by many consumers) is not a sustainable healthy eating strategy. Books like Fat Chance are regressive and only serve to increase consumer confusion about nutrition, rather than help create smarter consumers who are able to make informed decisions about their health.

I do not think his opinions are as out of line with science as you suggest. While perhaps not as widely promoted as other marketed opinions by Big Pharma, there is certainly substantial science and researched analysis to reinforce and support his "opinion".

Dr Lustig's info IS science based. You may be following the disinformation put out by the food industry that makes billions on selling processed food with sugar. learn for yourself what is the function of sugar in your diet??? Metabolic syndrome is caused by the breakdown of cell function from too much glucose in the blood stream. Sugar is that source. Just because you ENJOY sugar doesn't make it healthy! Sugar has the dopamine effect in the brain just like many drugs. sugar has no beneficial function in your body.

Debunked many times, throughout many years. Here's just one debunking of Lustig's "science":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZPKTaVB1IU
One distinction - in your next posts you mimic Lustig's "evidence" of sugar being bad, by stating that it has the same dopamine effect as cocaine and alcohol. This is true. So does "eating things that have no sugar, but that you personally really love to eat." So does hugging a friend. So does watching a video of kittens. In other words - Lustig is saying "See that? YEAH - that is proof that sugar is bad for you!" and science says "if that's true, then so is hugging friends and watching videos of kittens."

There's a reason you won't get this "information" from your doctor, and it is contained in the Hippocratic Oath-----"primum non nocere"---which translates to "first do no harm". Your doctor should be practicing evidence based medicine, which means he won't be exposing you to the type of crap cited above. Apparently "Dr'" Lustig skipped this part of medical ethics, and we can easily speculate why---cashing in on populist garbage.

I am going to listen to all of this, but just from the few bits I listened to this guy is dead wrong. It's the verbiage he uses. For instance, it is well understood that the sugar in fruit is mediated somewhat because the fiber slows the insulin response and you don't have that glucose spike. So when this guy claims that Lustig was wrong in fiber mitigating the absorbtion of fructose (he misquoted Lustig by saying "inhibits the absorption, that's now what Lustig said), he is flat out wrong.
Listening to more and Layne doesn't understand metabolic disease. By the way, I cut out sugar and went keto and in 4 weeks I dropped 30 lbs and cured my pre-diabetes (5.7 down to 5.2 A1C).

My doctor said, "You're over 50, nothing you can do. Just take the pills (diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol pills he wanted to prescribe). So pardon my language but screw the doctors. They are nothing but drug dealers. I cured all my issues in 4 weeks with a keto diet.
Not to mention they had my mom on all those drugs. She had a stroke, crashed and almost killed a new teen driver and then got dementia. Been in memory care for 10 years. She was finally on hospice a year ago. They decided to end all her medications since there was no benefit and guess what, she came out of hospice and her health improved. She is still with us.

Strict Keto diet and dropped 50 lbs and A1C from 6.0 to 4.7 in about 4 months.
Sugar and Carbohydrates are addictive and harmful. Your body does not need them for energy. Not everyone handles / processes them the same. One other thing… Animal Fat is not harmful. Fat Free processed food is full of Sugar. Seed oils are very harmful. Next time you go to the grocery store check out the huge display of seed oils vs olive oil and coconut oil.
There are a lot of Doctors on YouTube covering this subject with Real data to back it up.

Interesting story. Does it end with Santa Claus sliding down the chimney or the easter Bunny delivering candy?
Forgive my skepticism, but I doubt any physician would state "there's nothing you can do" and as far as a "keto diet" curing anything (except dropping a few pounds), well, res ipsa loquitur.
But maybe I should thank you instead. After all, I was under the delusion that I had successfully treated thousands of patients with diabetes and hypertension, as well as cured a myriad of other diseases all without knowing I was "screwed" and a "drug dealer". And I do have to admit I never cured a patient with 10+ years of "dementia" (of course, nobody has ----EVER). But now I know all I had to do was implement a "keto diet" and hand out a book by some quack and all the world's diseases would be cured. How wonderful :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

Regarding dementia you are putting words in my mouth. My mother is still cognitively not quite functional. She was on all those meds and she required a special bed and special wheelchair for nurses to move her and get her up. All the biopharm drugs were stopped because, frankly, on hospice and in her painful life there was no reason to be trying to keep her cholesterol low. Her BP hadn't been high in years but they still had her on meds. She was on 6 different meds for these conditions.
Her dementia did not decrease and she was not put on any keto diet. We just stopped her meds. Within 2 months she was more verbal, a bit more aware and physically better. She is still wheelchair bound. But she went from being hunched over and shaking to being sitting upright and not shaking. Her skin issues also greatly improved. She stopped picking at her scabs on her face and all her dry skin was much better.
Okay, regarding my doctor: He said that I could likely improve my results by diet and exercise but that since I was over 50 he didn't see many people continue with that and they usually fail. He literally said, "You are over 50, nothing you can do. Just take the pills."
He recently retired. The replacement doctor looked at my test results and my LDL was just a bit high (which is common on keto/carnivore diet). It was just a bit over and he said, "Did your last doctor talk to you about taking a statin." In my pre-visit questionnaire I mentioned my diet. I mentioned that I drink too much on weekends. I mentioned a few skin issues I wanted to discuss. All he did was look at test results from previous visit (a year old) and try to put me on a pill.
Now if you consider high blood pressure and cholesterol and pre-diabetes something to be "cured" then a keto diet cured me in 4 weeks and if you are a doctor and fail to realize that low carb diets can fix metabolic disease and you just push drugs, then you are the problem.
From MyChart before and after 4 weeks of keto. To be honest, the after test wasn't until about 2 months. I lost the weight in 4 weeks.
Oh and I've worked in Biopharm for 28 years. I won't take the drugs, just saying.

First of all, I had no intention about being insensitive about your mother. I'm glad she is doing better. And you might be surprised that I agree with discontinuing unnecessary medication, especially something as ridiculous as anti-cholesterol medication given her mental status. I misinterpreted the keto diet reference as having something to do with your mom's improvement. It is also ridiculous for a physician to suggest statins for borderline high LDLs unless there is an associated cardiac condition. Looks like you did quite well with weight loss, which in turn reduces HbgA1C and LDL. (Or looking at it the other way, excessive weight can elevate HbgA1C and LDL)
I think my point is simply that there a lot of quacks out there, a lot of books out there, and a lot of people who think "alternative medicine" is as good or better than the real thing. It is not. No amount of combining "power foods" is going to cure pneumonia or a brain malignancy.

I agree, there are a lot of quacks. One thing most agree on is getting rid of processed foods. Low carb seems to work for quite a lot of people, it works fairly quickly, and for me, it has been much easier to maintain.
Regarding the video and carbs/sugar addiction, I'd agree they are addictive. If I eat one candy on halloween, I eat the whole bowl. If I have a carb dinner then I can quickly fall out of ketosis and crave carbs at the next meals.
I'm glad you try not to overprescribe meds. I've had really bad luck with my last 2 primary care docs. We do have an NP that sees me sometimes and she is much better. I am quite critical of meds and it may just be me, but I blame the meds on my mom's stroke and subsequent dementia. I know people will disagree and that's okay.

Dr Lustig is as far from a Quack. Lustig is pediatric neuroendocrinologist who has performed medical studies that confirm danger of processed foods and a high carb diet. I have never before been informed of the metabolic function of the human body as explained in in his numerous podcasts. I also believe that many Doctors truly do not completely understand it either. It's too easy to prescribe a drug to treat a symptom. Most Primary DR. have little true knowledge of nutrition. I do know from experience that the Keto diet does work.... Sugar is poison!!!
