I will be staying for the month of February and am wondering if it will be easy to get a game. Is it best to turn up at the 1st tee and wait in hope, or what please?

we are taking lessons for beginners and our instructor mentioned that if you want to play one of the Executive courses (9 holes) you usually can get on if you are a single. I don't think that may be so easy on the Country Club courses.

A single should not have any trouble playing even in the high season. You can either put in a request, look at available tee times in a 3 day window or call the starter of a particular course to see if any openings that day.
My gut feel is that it is just as easy (or easier) to get a tee time at a championship course versus an executive, especially if you will be visiting as a resident guest instead of a resident member.
This document explains all you need to know:

In addition look into getting an account on the http://thevillages.net which allows you to browse tee times on a computer. Without it you must navigate the tee time system via a phone. I have always felt this service is a bit pricey ($8/month), but I have never been without it. I am not sure you can get an account for a month.

AJ has the right idea. You actually have a better chance of playing in a round if you're a single. Most people play in pairs, but there are a good number of three-somes and you're put with them whereas a couple can't take that slot.

Last month I was in The Villages, I called Mallory to get a game, no problem. The starter put me with three gentlemen, we had a grand time. We played quarter skins and chuckled the entire round. I find it easier getting out as a single in The Villages and here in California. Plus you meet some amazing people.
Go out and enjoy yourself, we'll be there in a couple of months full time and I'll be playing all the courses too as a single.
