That's right in front of the Sabal postal station isn't it? If so, are they providing assistance to people who use that postal station for their mail - and the postal delivery person who has to bring the mail there? Any instructions for them?

Looking at the picture it appears to be in close proximity to a sewer manhole. So, it is probably wash-out from another broken or rotting inferior sewer pipe and not a real sink hole which is caused by surface ground areas collapsing into underlying voids in the limestone subbase.

And why would you think this is not being addressed?

Did somebody say "SINKHOLE"? In The Villages? Well, fan my brow! What, in heaven's name, will happen next?

And why would you think this is not being addressed?

I asked for confirmation that it was, in fact, in front of the postal station. Because I don't know if it is or not. And then, I asked, if that was the case, what instructions were made available to residents who picked their mail up there. Because I don't know what those would be. Not because I think it isn't being addressed.

Sort of like if I ask my neighbor if she left a key with anyone in case of emergency, if she's leaving town for a month or more. It's not because I think she didn't do that. It's because I want to make sure she DID.

Reports I can find say Canal is still closed in both directions but last night the route through the Sabal Chase parking lot was being used as a detour.

Awesome. This is helpful to people who have homes in the area, but might have been away before this happened and haven't yet returned. They can read here, that there won't be any change to their postal service, and they'll know what the detour will be, when they come back from wherever they were.

Thank you.

Yep, I’m guessing TOTV membership is at least 100,000 registered members or more.

Shhhh, the S word is not allowed in the Villages (at least if you are employed by the entity), they are referred to as depressions.

Some posters aren’t always objective. Just shrug off the negativity..

We drove by it on 6/23 around 5:00pm, it's a nothingburger, maybe 2' x 2' right at the storm drain cover, it's filled in and the road open, we drove over it with the golf cart. I was hoping for a real sink hole, so far that's 2 for 2 here (previous one was at Sawgrass Grove, fire hydrant break, that one was a little bigger), yet to see a "real" sinkhole.

We had one of those collapses on our street last year, right next to the storm drain on the side of the road. They put an orange pylon out, and the next day they cut a nice neat square into the pavement, filled it with dirt, and put more pylons out. A week after that they covered it with pavement and smoothed it out. Two years before that, there was another one just like it down the other end of the block, but that one was bigger and took them MUCH longer to repair.

Lady Lake contracts the work out. I think contracting stuff out is a thing down here for pretty much everything. Back home our public works department does most of the work.

Apparently they filled it in with dirt and paved over it.

I am not a civil engineer but from what little I have read, that does not appear to be the recommended treatment for sinkhole remediation.

The article you referenced states "if it is actually a sinkhole and not a subsidence incident—a manmade problem caused by things like collapsed or broken sewer pipes and drainpipes".

This looks very much like the latter.

Just because certain "news" sites sensationalize it as a sink hole and state the road will be closed for an indeterminate length of time doesn't make it so.

It wasn't a sinkhole. It was a different type of ground collapse. And your post is an excellent reminder that there is a difference, and it's not just semantics.

A sinkhole is a TYPE of ground collapse. Not all ground collapses are sinkholes.

A distinction without a difference when I am in the car that hits it or if I live on the street that is blocked by it. In those situations, I'll leave it up to the experts to quibble over whether the proper term is sinkhole, wash out, depression, cover collapse, cover subsidence, or some other term, I just want to know how to get around it and when it will be fixed.

When it affects me, I will be sure to let you know. I can guarantee that my first question won't be whether it is a depression or sink hole or cover collapse or cover subsidence or wash out.
