Did you see the petition on the on-line rag to open the theater???

+3k signatures.

One person quoted, "For the last six months or more, she and her husband and a friend have been going once a week and there are usually 10-15 people there per show, she said.".....................BINGO.

Then you have another wishing for Katie Belle's.

The interesting part of this topic is those that trash the ‘online rag’... but continue to read and quote from its content. So the real winner here is its publisher....as he continues to occupy space (rent free) in Villagers heads!

Yep.

Two points: as the OP mentioned attendance at the Old Mill Playhouse is spotty at best. I've been to packed theaters there on a couple of the big releases, but have also attended when there are far more empty seats than patrons. Why have two active theaters when one is obviously more than filling the bill?

Second the petition approaches this as all-or-nothing. Not even close. AMC Lake Square 12 in Leesburg is only about 2.5 miles farther from Brownwood Paddock Square than Lake Sumter Landing is, with better traffic flow. There are other theaters in the area as well though admittedly with a bit longer drive.

I would guess the Developer has plans for that space - it’s large and it’s not making them any money.
And I will guess it won’t be a movie theatre (or a Katie Belles).

I also will guess Don W will find out what the plan is before it’s announced.

I could make guesses what it will be, but they would be guesses.

The Brownwood Theatre closed during Covid 2020, two and a half years prior to me moving here. Buying just across 44 in Richmond, it would have been great to have had a movie theatre so close to where I live, but I knew it had a zero chance of reopening when I purchased here. This situation is not unique to The Villages - theatres across the country are either closing or struggling to remain profitable. People got used to streaming services during Covid, and most have not returned to the theatres. This is also coupled with the quality of movies being shown. Small and independent films are seldom screening at cinemas these days, opting to go straight to a streaming service. Action and superhero movies seem to have taken over, targeting a young male audience, that will see these movies over and over again. I know most folks I talk to here (including myself) are not fans of this genre of movies. I was an avid movie goer (2-3 times per week) most of my adult life, and looked forward to continuing this trend in retirement. However, based on the quality of films showing at theatres since Covid, I rarely go to the movies. Since moving here, I think I’ve gone to The Old Mill Playhouse maybe 6 times, and 3 of those times was to watch a special screening of an old classic movie.

IMHO, it is not up to the developer to reopen the movie theater, this decision would be up to AMC or another entity to reopen. The developer could offer lower rent or some other enticement, but since the developer is not in the movie business they are the wrong entity to approach.
Personally, I think a mixed-use approach could work, say half of the theaters used for local entertainment like the Sharon on a smaller scale, with the other theaters showing actual movies.

If made them money when they had it leased. The person who leased probably had different view. Can’t really blame Covid it was going down hill before that, but Covid finished it off. Maybe Why it’s empty no one wants to lease it. Movie theaters going way off the phone booth IMO.

It didn’t make money

Will the 4000 Villagers who signed the petition commit to a monthly subscription service? $75 a month, you get unlimited movies at the Brownwood theater. Cheaper than Netflix.
It’s not a charity, it needs to make $$$$

It probably costs more in electricity alone than they bring in. This isn’t only a Villages issue. Even in Los Angeles one of the largest theaters, ArcLight, closed too. Among so many others all over the country.

The AMC Theater in Leesburg has great seats. Kind of far to go from the CR466 area of the Villages but worth the trip.

I do miss the Barnstorm Theater though. Maybe the new owners of Old Mill Playhouse will buy it but I kind of doubt it.

That sounds like a likely prospect.

I walked around a local dog park years ago with a professional pickleball instructor who was here for six months or so. She was from further south but had been taking advantage of the newer interest in pickleball back then here in the Villages. It sounded like she was a very busy lady.

The price of Netflix wasn’t really the point of the post.

Point is, running a theater is expensive, it won’t be sustained with people going to the movies on a thursday afternoon twice a month.

These people are deluded and wasting their time. The theater wasn't profitable & TV is not a charity organization. Personally I think that the real reason these people that still want a movie theater is because they are too old and stupid to understand how to stream movies & set up a home theater sound system.

If the theater was profitable, it would be open. Especially if it was wildly profitable.

Imagine that meeting,
“we have the brownwood theater, it’s returning 17% on our investment; when should we re-open it”
“Screw those villagers, we are never opening it, think of something that will return 3%, then we will open it”

Movies truly went down hill when D I E kicked in and movies are more about political messaging and indoctrination than allowing creativity. To be in the Guild too many preconceived boxes have to get checked to have movies approved and p c has made historical movies the enemy just like history. Its sad. If the theater focused on and brought back old movies I bet people who want to get out of their houses for a while just might go.

Last year many classic movies like “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” played at the Sharon. Was absolutely fantastic to see the movies on that big screen. Watching some of the movies was like seeing the play on Broadway

BUT every time I went there were less than 6 people in the theater

Was very disappointing because I knew the movies would not be continuing. have not seen any indication of movies this year

I agree with everything you just posted. Hollywood has an “agenda” now with most movies - so sad.

Regarding old movies, I remember when I first moved here in 2022 that the Sharon had classic movie series they would show in the afternoons- that stopped abruptly, so I guess that was not profitable. I also attended the monthly “Film Noir” club at the Savannah last year, showing great classics, with commentary before and after the film with a film historian - that seemed to be well-attended, but alas seems to have also stopped.

Tonight, Old Mill is screening the 1975 classic “Jaws” - I may attend that - granted you could watch at home - but nothing like watching a movie on the big screen with a big bucket of movie popcorn - makes for fun night out!

Perhaps the above-quoted comment should be directed to the powers-that-be who actually control such things. It should carry a tremendous amount of weight in the decision-making process (assuming there IS one, I suppose) regarding whether or not the theater in Brownwood should re-open.

Agree ! I do the same thing, absolutely shocked at what they allow on that site, especially the derogatory names they allow people to post for black people; first time I saw that actually could not believe it. But, it's like a train wreck to me, say I'm NOT going to look at it, and then I go back in a couple weeks and look ! Their "journalism style" is amazing too, printing the brand, model, price of everything, and often printing a lot of really strange details about people... but like you commented, it works for them because I forget about it for a month or two, and then go take a look !

Actually though TV has a lot of FIPs who, back in the world, actually accomplished a lot. What they say or write can have a lot of merit. Can't say the same for a lot of the Hollywood types. The vapidity of a lot of those people is beyond belief!

Right, our country's economy (thankfully) is based on capitalism, supply and demand, profit. Personally, I like to go to the old fashioned cinema about once a month, but let's face it, streaming of first run movies, pay per view at home, comfort of watching a film in your P.J.'s (LOL) and the proximity of the kitchen for popcorn with REAL butter for much less than $6-$10 is a powerful force. We'll soon have a generation of young people who have never attended a "movie theater", or even know what one is.... like a "type writer", we'll have to show them a picture and explain...LOL !

Agree ! From this "old folks" point of view, I really miss the epics, the historic dramas, and the "fun" classics; Out of Africa, Gandhi, Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, even back to very little kid and having my parents take me to see The Greatest Show on Earth and Ben Hur (20+ min. of chariot racing), and Star Wars, Pearl Harbor, etc. Some of them, even on a 90" TV with surround sound, just had something special in a theater... forgot "Jaws", LOL ! Not making the epics any more, no market for entertaining films where you actually learn a bit of history, geography, along the way.

I used to take them to the Brownwood Theater. It was so much fun to get ice cream afterward and nice to see their faces away from their phones and tablets you foolish old people that think no one cared about the Brownwood theater.

"YOU foolish old people", the name calling and painting of all with ONE brush comments on this site never fail to amaze me. Wonder if people who write similar things ever stop to allow their thinking to catch up with their fingers on a keyboard ? ALL human beings get old, every single day all get OLDER. and what does "foolish" have to do with anything. People look at a theater's offerings, sometimes, nothing appeals to them ! ? If someone is "selling" a supply of films with subjects that are NOT in demand, that business will have to change and show films that the public wants, or, if there are none being made, then the business will close.

Jaws is a good tip. I may go to the matinee. I've only seen Jaws on TV, never in the movies.

No matter how large your home theater, Jaws in NOT the same as in a traditional theater... at home you KNOW, for certain, the great white is NOT behind you, at the theater you "think" it's not coming up behind you but.... you're not 100% sure...LOL, LOL, LOL ! :D

Heh. One might assume that at times.

Actually though TV has a lot of FIPs who, back in the world, actually accomplished a lot. What they say or write can have a lot of merit. Can't say the same for a lot of the Hollywood types. The vapidity of a lot of those people is beyond belief!

Let's get a petition to open the theater and allow cigar smoking.

There are cigars of all sizes. I recall a woman visitor to our home who smoked very thin and rather pleasant smelling ones. And then a dog walker who rides his golf cart to bring the pooch along often leaves cigar butts that I often confuse with large dog poops. And the smell of these things...yuck.

First organizational meeting of the TV Cannabis Club ....with special guests....Cheech and Chong...will be the first Tuesday after election day. Due to lack of accommodating event space on campus...this one will be held in the snack aisle of the 7/11! ;)

Last Friday I played 18 with a guy who had a small little cigar every hole....every hole.

I was not on the same reservation, so I was the third cart in the group.

Decided to catch matinee of Jaws today at Old Mill Playhouse - just got out - counted about 30 patrons, which is pretty good for a nearly 50 year old movie - wish they would screen more older, classic movies

I continue to be peeved that so many things in The Villages have been done away with because of Covid, and they haven't been brought back now that the actions have been proven to be an over reaction. HOW CAN I SIGN THE PETITION??? And how about the terrific daily breakfast buffets at several C.C. restaurants?

Did you tell anyone at the theater about your wish?

Add pipes and I'm on board.

Actually, I did mention I enjoy classic movies to the ticket cashier - probably should have sought out the manager and thanked him for programming

The Jim Carey movie “Mask” is playing next week, and “ The Goonies” the week after that. Hopefully the trend will continue — would be great to go to the movies each week.

In a few months, you might have more options as to what you stick in that pipe.

I haven't been to a movie theatre in maybe 20 years? Possibly longer. My first job was a movie theatre as the concession clerk (there was just one small counter, and one employee running it, with an old fashioned cash box, no cash register).

The last time I went, I don't even remember which movie it was. Might've been one of the Die Hard movies with Bruce Willis. Whatever it was, the volume was REALLY high, and the background music was so loud it distracted from the scene. That and constantly struggling to see over the head of the person in front of me, who sat up SUPER straight and tall to see over the person in front of them...

More trouble than it's worth. I have a 27" HD computer monitor, and sound that streams directly into my hearing aides. No speakers necessary and my graphic equalizer on my computer sound system lets me adjust however I want.

Most of the movies I watch are free, and the ones I pay for are mine to keep and play any time I want. And if I have to go to the bathroom I can pause it, go, and come back and pick up where I left off.

Bonus - no sticky floor from the last showing's spilled drinks to cling to the bottom of my shoes.

It probably costs more in electricity alone than they bring in. This isn’t only a Villages issue. Even in Los Angeles one of the largest theaters, ArcLight, closed too. Among so many others all over the country.

The movie theaters were a marketing tool but now no longer needed. An empty building is not making money either. I am a bit surprised that something has happen with the theatre property by now.

A lot of merit to this. TV aside, the land .....and value of the land, that a lot of these mega theater complexes sit on....far exceeds the receipts that today’s Hollywood offerings generate. Housing and mixed use developers love these parcels

I'm tired of waking up on the floor.
No thank you please, it only makes me sneeze,
and it makes it hard to find the door".
