Years ago, a buddy of mine and I were visiting another buddy in Chicago. Lunchtime rolled around and we asked the local where we should eat. He said that a new chain called "Hooters" had opened up nearby. My other buddy asked, "How's the food?" to which the local friend answered, "Better than it has to be." We soon found out what he was talking about.

I've since eaten at Hooters a few times in different locations with different friends and I have found the following to be true:

The wait staff have always been very attractive young ladies (not sure how they don't get sued for not hiring men, older women, etc.)

The wait staff have always been really friendly and sweet (which of course is their job, but they do it very well)

The food is better than it has to be, but not really all that great in any objective sense

Other than the wait staff, they are basically a sports bar, which is great if you are into that and not so great if you aren't

The D and R words come to mind. And you seriously don’t mind the contempt just because they don’t show it? Okay. Free country. We have a ladies group called, “Hooters on Scooters” actually the scooters are trail bike motorcycles. The ladies wear full armour for the sport but have fun with name.

It's my firm belief that we (old folks nearing the end) should focus a lot more on having fun, joking around, poking fun at ourselves and our friends than we typically do. If you have 3000 days left to live do you want to spend them angry? How about 300 days? Not me.

Will be interesting to see how they fare here. Back West, Hooters seemed to have peaked in the late 90s/early 00s, and have steadily declined in the marketplace since. In Colorado, most locations closed down in the last 10 years. They must see a chance for success in TV. Time will tell.

I've only been to Hooters when my kid was in youth hockey and the team went there for tournaments (none were close by me at that time) and then later one did open near me and I went a few times alone after my divorce.

I will say the servers were always nice, I had good service and I really like the wings, breaded or naked wings were good. Beer was good and cold. Honestly the women weren't all that scantily clad (skin colored leggings). Hell the only thing keeping me away is the reputation of being a place for the boobs. I think they are better than BWW.

I would no more go to a restaurant called Hooters than I would use the slang term Hooters. Nothing against owls, but then they don’t have owls as waitresses. I like to treat waitresses with respect, not ogle their hooters.

We had been to a couple of Hooters locations back in the 90’s and have no desire to return.

The food was comparable to school lunch quality. Scenery aside, nothing appealed to us to return and spend money there.

Dinner time came to pass so we guys cleaned up the kids and took them to the nearest restaurant, Hooters. Four guys with eight pre-school aged kiddos. The wait staff treated us like royalty. And, they had high chairs for the babies. Hooters is a great place.

Remember them resident surveys the villages would put out every year of what residents would like to see coming into the villages? I've always listed Hooters, The Tilted Kilt, and Twin Peaks even though I know Twin Peaks are mainly out west. TV does manage to make national news for some pretty sketchy reasons. Then again, articles about Operation Christmas Child, Villagers volunteering to tutor kids having a hard time in school, and "Honey-do" programs where folks unable to do routine maintenance themselves can get a volunteer Villager to do it for free, just don't sell many magazines or generate many clicks.

All three places that have closed in SS in the last year (Margarita Republic, Gators Dockside, and World of Beer), all seem to have a couple things in common. They all were primarily bars that served mediocre pub food and had very inconsistent service. Also, they all attracted younger crowds and tended to have patrons who showed up in the later hours police reports.

I doubt that many Villages residents will miss those establishments, but the three prime town square vacancies certainly are an eyesore. Hopefully the spaces can be filled with reputable businesses and won’t wind up as apartments.

All in all, Spanish Springs is in a tough spot, I think we will see major changes there in the next few years.

There are not a lot of residents to the north, that was okay when it was just SS and LSL. Now, folks around LSL can go south - brownwood, sawgrass and soon 2 more. There’s less to temp you north.
SS will survive, but, as noted above, a beer joint with sub par pub food won’t cut it there. Bella Vita has been a great experience, look for more like that.
I think the renaissance of SS will be fantastic.
