View Full Version : Always drive your car defensively.....

Made a right turn out of the main entrance of Richmond -- heading South on Meggison Rd. Immediately coming out of the round-about I was staring down a car coming North on the inside lane of the two Southbound lanes!! Don't know how long she (who appeared to have paper directions in hand) had driven down the wrong side of the road, but fortunately she was getting ready to enter the round-about I just exited and, hopefully, exited on the proper side.

My 2003 Acura has a wonderful feature - I can have both of my hands on the steering wheel and my right thumb can also be on the horn.
Any time I drive thru a shopping center like Lake Deaton or thru a roundabout, I always have my thumb on the horn so I can honk at other drivers if they do something stupid.

Americans are rank amateurs at honking. Just travel to most other countries and you will find out that drivers honk at least 100 times as much as Americans do. In Saudi Arabia, when you came to an intersection, the first one to honk had the right-of-way.

If you could do one thing to make roundabouts work better, what would you do and why.
I might suggest speed bumps at the entrance to force those aggressive jerks to slow down instead of speeding up to see if they can intimidate the drivers coming around.
Another would be to put speed cameras that issue tickets to vehicles exceeding the suggested 20 mph.
What would you suggest?

So she was north bound on Meggison in the south bound lanes?? Or was she going clockwise in the roundabout?
Is the main entrance at Richmond pitch and putt or is it the one farther north near Brownwood?
I am trying to figure out this could happen. It would take an effort for a car to go north in the south bound lanes.

NEITHER
Speed bumps would effectively change the yield sign to a stop sign and totally disrupt traffic flow at every roundabout. Bad idea.
Speed cameras in an RB? Very low yield. Ever try to take an RB at over 20 in an SUV? Good luck. Maybe you'd catch a few cowboys in a high performance sports car, but that's it. Better off monitoring the straightaways for those going 55+ on BV and Morse. Of course, the 35 speed limit on those roads is ridiculous in the first place---traffic is slowed down by all the RBs anyway. I suspect the only reason for setting it at 35 was to allow idiots in their idiotic "street legal" golf carts on the road to play Russian Roulette.

My experience with other drivers in TV is that many are kind and considerate. However, there are many who drive recklessly over the speed limit often times playing with their phones. We can use available technology to rein in bad drivers and hit them financially enough to hurt. Food for thought.

Make it mandatory that everyone take a class on how to drive.
2nd, a camera for going over the âsuggestedâ 20mph? WHAT? You can take these roundabouts faster up to the speed limit. How about fining people that stop at each roundabout when no cars are coming? There is no stop sign at the roundabout. 99% of the roundabouts you can see if anybody is in the roundabout way before you get to it, so if nobody is coming, keep driving.
3rd, fining people that go 5mph thru the roundabout instead of the 20mph âsuggestedâ limit?

Good advice, and not just for TV.
Drive here long enough and you see some really strange sights on the roads and streets. Guy backing up in a roundabout so he could take the exit he just missed...some cowboy taking using the ditch as a passing lane on El Camino Real so he could pass a car in the right lane that apparently wasn't going fast enough for him...Guy in a golf cart going about 5 mph with a white blind cane strapped to the back...somebody using up FOUR parking spots at Publix...numerous instances of people blowing stop signs and red lights...
Moral of the story: know what is going on not only in front of you but in the back and on both sides at all times. Being right in TV is go guarantee of staying safe.

Way too easy to find...
Florida Statute 316.123(2)(b): At a four-way stop intersection, the driver of the first vehicle to stop at the intersection shall be the first to proceed. If two or more vehicles reach the four-way stop intersection at the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.

Reminds me of the trip in a rented RV from Rome up to the Alps. Decided to tour Rome just before returning the RV. The apparent chaos actually gradually began to make some sense. Three lanes can be much more efficiently utilized if they're treated as being more like five. :-) Lots of the extra use was via motorbike. Maybe the most interesting aspect was the horn use. Got the distinct impression that a toot on a horn most likely meant "you go ahead". It was definitely "different".
The oddity that I never figured out was on the Italian version of the Autobahn , with me doing a dutifully relatively slow rate of speed in the right lane, each and every passing car - and some were *very* much faster - made it a point to pull into my right lane as closely as possible to my left front fender. What's up with that? Over all, upon returning the rented RV prior to hopping the cruise ship, I concluded that it had *not* been an adventure that I'd choose to repeat. Did not see any road signs in Switzerland written in English, making me give up on riding by the LHC. Did see that leaning tower of Galileo fame. Oh, and Switzerland has a *lot* of tunnels.
Not a fan of hearing the horns at the traffic circles. Fine if they help avoid a collision, but they can be discombobulating and confusing for others in the area that are not involved and can't tell whether they *should* know what the noise is about - especially when well aware there there's no shortage of idiots about who only *think* they have a valid reason for blowing it.
Would also opine that more threads on traffic circles is likely a *good* thing. They seem to always "out" several folks who have things exactly backwards. Possibly not the ideal means of education, but those folks were never going to "take the course", anyway. Wait. I guess the "course" is more about golf carts. Conflating things seems to have become my superpower. :-( Anyway, the video done by the local police officer on carts (I think) was most satisfactory, succinctly covering all the info that would be in the course. Dang. Can't locate that video. Anybody else?

I haven't read the other roundabout postings so I maybe repeating a popular observation. I see a lot of drivers enter a roundabout in the left lane and make the first right exit. They don't care about or ignore the big green and white signs showing you how each lane works or the big arrows on the ground that show you how to use the lane you're in? The worst roundabout is on Meggison road heading towards Morse blvd from the south. It seems that half the drivers around me entering the roundabout in the left lane turn right onto Morse. If you're in the right lane continuing straight through on Meggison watch out! I'm not sure what the solution is? A bigger sign over the road that says "Don't turn right from the left lane"?

Recently, I was driving north in the right lane on Buena Vista when I was slowing down to enter a roundabout. I saw a car in the left lane that had slowed down and had its left blinker on. I assumed they had just moved over to the left lane and had inadvertently left their left blinker on. But no, as I began to enter the roundabout I saw that car turn left into the roundabout. I honked my horn, hoping they would figure out something was wrong, but they continued going the wrong way around the roundabout. I didnât hear any crash noise so they appeared to make it through. They did have out of state plates. You can do that maneuver in England and Australia, but not here in The Villages!

very true due to many snowbirds and young drivers who do not live in TV. I had a minor accident there due to a young lady from Ocala (careless & not paying attention driver), then Sumter police did stop by, but did not make a report on it . So, I called Sumter Police (Sheriff) and finally made the police to write up a report showing she was at fault. Then her ins. co. will pay my truck s damage and car rental (will take auto body shop one month to finish my truck s work, ugh). Chas

Two thoughts.
1. can you take the RB at 35 mph safely and stay in your lane?
2. You may be able to see a vehicle in the RB as you approach, but can you guarantee that they won't turn in front of you as you try to enter?
Remember, the sign may not say "stop", but it does say "Yield"! That means the vehicle wanting to enter the RB does not have the right to enter until it is safe. Those in the RB don't have to make room for you. Sorry to let you know, but sometimes "yielding" means "wait" or "stop" if you have to. Merging safety is the responsibility of the vehicle wanting to enter.

âThey donât know what they are talking aboutâ said the man. "It ainât just one car! There are hundreds of them!"

Agreed, having the horn so easily available is a huge asset, especially in TV!!!!

WRONG!!! Left lane 3rd exit OR STRAIGHT only. Amazing how often someone wants to make a didactic post and is completely wrong. Well. I guess that's social media in a nutshell :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:
Wrong!
No wonder we have problems, people canât read the BIG green signs before every roundabout:
The left lane can take the â2ndâ, â3rdâ, â4thâ, â5thâ exit or go round and round the circle if they want, the only restriction is it CANâT take the â1stâ exit!
The right lane can take the â1stâ exit or MUST exit the â2ndâ.
There are a couple of roundabouts that have a solid white line that forces the right lane to take the upcoming exit, but quite a few cowboys ignore that law too and cross it to get to the next exit.
Why is it so hard for something so easy. My answer to driving defensively, have an ambulance chaser lawyerâs and the Sumter sheriffâs phone numbers on speed dial.

People of the villages are not immune. And its more concentrated here.
My first month I saw a truck get t boned by and 80 year old who never even hit the breaks doing 60.
You get used to sitting back, and waiting at night at major intersections.

So you are arguing that *this* is more accurate?
Big signs at every roundabout. RIGHT LANE EXIT OR STRAIGHT ONLY, LEFT LANE GO AROUND ONLY
There are big signs at every roundabout.... they DON'T all show the same thing. There are two (or maybe three) BIG green signs before roundabouts that direct traffic in the left lane to exit at the 1st exit!
GE's description is the shortest, most useful, and most accurate I have seen in the many threads on this topic.

Some of us are...but then again, I look at the green signs are circles to see where each lane is allowed to exit.
Most basic rule is the left lane (closest to the middle of the circle) has the right of way. Inside lane first, outside lane second, not yet in circle last.
Anything else traps the inside lane and causes accidents. Contingent on there not being a solid white line to stop things, of course.

Odd, how driving practices vary from place to place and country to country. Doing what we think is safe and prudent in TV can get you injured or killed in other places, or vice versa.
I've done a lot of riding as a passenger in cars in Thailand. The concept of "no passing zone" doesn't exist there, at least in practice. Northern Thailand is mountainous with a lot of narrow roads. It is common for one car to decide to pass another when the passing car can see barely 50 yards ahead. They way they do it is that the car doing the passing will start rapidly beeping his horn. This is a signal for the car being passed to edge over as far to the left as possible. Any oncoming car will hear the beeping, know what is going on and will move as far to the right as possible. The passing car stays in the middle. The result is that three cars can fit somewhat snugly on a road that you'd have sworn could barely contain two.
Another oddity is pedestrian crossings at intersections. They're marked (sort of) But Thais see speed, stop and yield signs as suggestions and as a result there are cars going at various speeds mixing with pedestrians in the crosswalk. I learned early on that they way to cross is NOT to pick your openings and try to get from spot to spot as rapidly as possible. That only confuses things and makes it more dangerous for all concerned. Instead you start walking across at a constant speed. They'll see and avoid you. Scary, the first few times, as your instinct runs directly counter to what you need to do.
You see some of those regional differences here too. For example, Minnesotans are notorious for slowing down when on a freeway to allow merging cars to get on in front of them. Don't see that very much here especially on a crowded freeway. Another thing I see from time to time (still don't understand it) is when in a line of cars stopping for a red light will have a person in that line decide not to block an intersection: they'll stop short of a road or street entering on the right, so traffic coming from that way can get on. Some folks appreciate it. Others react as if you've personally and irreparably inconvenienced them. To me it is only common courtesy, but then again I'm from Minnesota...

Two points to ponder. In many, if not most, states it is illegal to block an intersection. It is not a matter of courtesy. To allow cross traffic to move, the intersection must be kept free of stationary vehicles.
Another point is that most folks don't have any idea of the concept of a "space cushion". One car let's off the gas and the car following has to brake. Then the next car has to brake a little harder, and so on, until someone can't stop in time and a collision occurs. Why? Because someone slowed to let someone else merge before they bothered to accellerate so they can smoothly, and safely, enter the flow of traffic.

Thx for the clarification. I misspoke when I used the word "intersection", and I do understand that law. What I meant was more along the lines of a right turn at the light from 441 onto El Camino Real. there is a road about 200 yards before the light that serves as one of the accesses to the gas station (Circle K?). When some people stop short so as not to block that entrance, some other folks get irate because of it.

The moral of this story -- Alway drive defensively as you never know what you will encounter :)

Did some clicking as to how (or whether) laws regarding driving in roundabouts differ from state to state. Laws in general pretty much agree, but there ARE differences. In Maryland, for example, you are apparently required to use your signals to let other drivers know your intentions when in a roundabout. Indiana, however, says you DON'T have to signal. Arizona has some new laws governing larger vehicles in roundabouts that other states don't. Nevada apparently has laws governing traffic activity in new ("modern") roundabouts that apparently aren't in effect in the "older" ones. Some states require that you use your signal to let other cars know you are NOT turning off (signaling left if you are going to bypass an exit and continue on in the circle). Others don't. Florida has some pretty definite, and differing, laws regarding driving in "roundabouts" vs. "traffic circles". Apparently a lot of other states don't. And so on. Pretty confusing.
IMO drivers in general aren't aware of these differences, but the lawyers surely are. I googled up several who profess expertise in laws governing traffic circles, some pointing out that there ARE differences state-to-state (though not specifying what they are, as a rule) and that they (or their law firm) are just the folks to call if you end up bending your vehicle in a roundabout.
Lots of discussion and disagreement here about "right" and "wrong" ways to navigate roundabouts. Given the differences state-to-state in roundabout rules, it might just be that what was right and just back home just doesn't fly here in Florida. But folks who have been doing it a certain way for, say, 30 years back in Boston might find it hard to change those habits in just a few months in Florida. Or any other state for that matter.
In other words, don't assume you are right in Florida because it was right in your state of origin. It just might not be.
