Most of us who live in TV are probably driving our cars far fewer miles so the issue is whether to time an oil change to miles vs. time (months)? Recognizing that there are warranty requirements and variations by autos, what schedule do you maintain for oil changes?

I do it once a year on cars we don't drive too often - same for other things with gas engines....generator, pressure washer, etc.

Since my car is still covered by a powertrain waraanty, I am required to do it every 6 months. I probably will continue to change my oil every 6 months since the oil change is also an opportunity to have the mechanic check over the vehicle and make sure it is still in good running condition.

Thanks for the responses. My question though is more one of time - What if it takes 2 years to get 10,000 miles? Would you change the oil after one year?

Most manufacturers have time or distance recommendations. 6 months or 7,500 miles etc. whichever comes first

Check your owners manual and if you don't drive much at all use the time recommendation (6 months etc.). You should be good to go using that guideline.

We drive a Honda Insight Hybrid. It has 8500 miles on it and have 20% Oil Life left. The car will tell us when it is time for a change.

The Thunderbird is our 2nd car and is driven 500 miles annually and now has 2,600 miles on it.
I do a complete LOF annually by a mechanic who checks the whole car.
It is prob. time for a coolant flush.

My truck and car every 5000 mi. Change my own oil and use synthetic in the car.

Yep.
The reminder said oil change maintenance, but they did the tire rotation and reset the computer. I think they have a software update for the reminders, but we will see what is says at 15K.

The need for low mileage changing is more of a function of your driving habits than total miles. Short runs ( i.e. 15 minute trips to the store and the mail box) can really be hard on the oil. My suggestion is that you change every 6 months if you are incurring less than 5000 miles a year and in any event at least once a year. If you do put on 3,000 in 6 months change it then. I personally change oil & filter every 3,500 miles since I started driving (1957) and have never had an engine excess wear problem. I keep my cars up to around 180,000 miles. The new synthetics are good but they still become "polluted" quickly with lots of short hop driving. I also suggest that you take the car on the freeway for 30 minutes or so every month if normal use is only short hops. Warm up the engine and the exhaust system!

There is a time limit on oil because internal combustion engines create acids that are harmful to the oil. I change my own because I've had bad experiences of oil change places not tightening the drain plug, over filling, and trying to sell me everything immaginable. I use full synthetic and change every 5,000 miles. I wouldn't go over 6 months though.

Most manufactors list two schedules for changing oil and filters. 1, Normal
service, ordinary trips (more than 15 minutes). 2, Severe service, short trips, stop and go traffic, weather. Living here in Florida and TV with all the stop and go traffic, short trips, dust, etc., is considered in my manual as severe service, change at 3 months or 3000 miles whichever comes first. I have done this for years as I have lived in harsh climates. Be sure to use the proper classification (i.e. SL, SG, CD, OE, etc)and weight of oil specified in the manuals whether it be regular, blended or synthetic type.

As for my golf cart, I change every 40 to 50 hours including filter. I also change the fuel filters at the same time.

I would follow the manufactures recomendations but if my milage was too low I would change at least once a year.

Ace Hardware sells stuff in a bottle specifically for grease stains in a driveway but you'd also be amazed how the sun eliminates most oil stains within a month.

I use Simple Green. I spay it on, let it set about 10-15 minutes, then spray again, wait about 15 minutes then rinse. I have done this inside my garage after drips or small spill. Works on pavers also.
