No kidding, that's exactly what I said when I saw that. I can't imagine what either side has gained for keeping this guy breathing this long.

The crooks and criminals have the law on their side. I'm sure they are watching tv, eating their food and helping plot more attacks. The world is upside down.

Just imagine the legal costs. And WE pay for BOTH sides!!! The bureaucracy of our government is maddening. Yet another example is the "ongoing investigation" of the July 13th incident in PA. Stonewalling.

We have the best system in the world, but..... grrrrrr.

I don't disagree with the comments on this thread. But, I would just point out that, as I understand it, these men have never been convicted of a crime. How would you get a jury to decide on a death penalty after 23 years? They should have been formally prosecuted many years ago.

This guy admitted to his involvement in the attack. He was also involved in other terrorist attacks which he has also admitted his role.

This guy should have been prosecuted years ago but various administrations could not agree under which venue to try him - federal court or a military tribunal. It makes no difference to me how they get it done, but the end result is government bureaucracy at its best. I should also mention that government lawyers have never had a good track record at prosecuting cases, so it seems that they always tend to gravitate toward seeking a plea bargain.

Unfortunately, I believe that we haven’t seen the last of this guy. He may very well be identified as a candidate for a future prisoner swap. That’s another area, IMO, that we always tend to give away more than we get back.

Regarding prisoner swaps: I remember when Israel would trade 1000 enemy POWs for one Israeli soldier and then brag about how one of theirs was worth 1000 of the other guys. All in how you spin it.

The legal process of special military tribunals cooked up for these people is of dubious veracity, and many military lawyers, most of whom are part time reservists, do not want to pollute their reputations by participating in these tribunals. Add to that everything must be done in Gitmo, where mail is only delivered twice a month, if weather permits the barge to make it from Jacksonville, and yes, you have a mess.

Most all cases time and multiple appeals (so lawyers can collect welfare checks) seems to get them off or lighter sentences. IMO they should be NO plea deals in murder cases. We have couple manslaughter local cases seems to be in freezer? Why was OLR released. Most with brain know why…

Of 780 men detained at GITMO only 16 were ever charged with a crime. Of the 30 remaining none have been charged. The cost of detention is $13M per person per year. Not only is justice delayed justice denied, it's expensive too. It's past time to resolve these cases and put 9/11 behind us. Since no one else has the political courage let Joe do it.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, has been charged with various crimes, including terrorism and murder. He has confessed to numerous crimes, including masterminding the 9/11 attacks, the Richard Reid shoe bombing attempt, and the murder of journalist Daniel Pearl, among others. Recently, he has reached a plea deal with U.S. prosecutors, agreeing to plead guilty to conspiracy in exchange for avoiding the death penalty and receiving a life sentence instead.

Still say shoot them when the door is open as they tried to escape.
No sympathy for them.

It has been 23 years and we haven’t even had a trial. Even if convicted, the appeals would probably take another 23 years. He is 59. So we are talking 2051 at the earliest.

News this morning said the deal is off. Something to do with someone higher up needing to approve the deal.

Since the defendants were tortured, a lot of the evidence is not admissible in a court of law.

I find it hard to believe that this issue lingers over 20 years later.
