Yes, I know I get bored sometimes and look for something to occupy my brain while I still can:D
Ok, I figured out when I take shower how much water I use (based on my shower head) based on my method cutting water off when it don’t need to run.
It’s takes 30 seconds for hot water to reach my back master shower which takes 1 gallon of water to get hot water back there.
Now I start showering
It takes me 89 seconds water running to shower using 2.6 gallons or 9.84 liters of water.
From start to finish 119 seconds and 3.6 gallons/ 13.62 liters.
I was guessing I was using 6 gallons or more, but was way lower than my guest amount! :highfive:
When water ration comes I’ll have to figure out how use that 1 gallon water waiting on hot water to get to shower? No sense let gallon water go down drain under rationing:sigh:

I don't know what water rationing you're talking about - I haven't heard of any need for that kind of rationing. We have a "please try not to use your sprinklers too much for awhile" thing during droughts, but that's about it.
Meanwhile, if you're trying to think of things to do with the water from your faucet that you don't use because it's not hot yet...
Put a bucket under the faucet. Then use that water to wash your car. Or water your flowerbeds. Or bathe your dog. You can funnel it into some plastic bottles that might've held 2 litres of soda or gallons of spring water. Keep one in your freezer, and another in whatever closet you keep your bathroom supplies. If there's an emergency with power outage or the need to shut off your water, the frozen water in the freezer will help keep everything else in the freezer cold, and you can use the water from the other bottles to fill the tank in your toilet.

Our gas tankless takes forever for HOT to get to shower. Which works for me I wash my hair in cold water, and rinse with warm. By that time the water is to temp.
I also only run the dishwasher after laundry or shower so water is always hot. No idea how many gallons but if I need to water the plants, a 5 gallon bucket will be full before hot comes in to play

We have a recirculating tankless water heater that we spec’d when we built the house. Probably spending more on energy than we’re saving on water. But it sure is nice not having to wait for hot water.

I think missing the point. The point was 2.6 gallons to shower, 3.6 if count time takes hot water to reach for back, not want system or recommendation for me.
About 8 so years ago went thru water rationing which they charged more for water. All while new water bottling plant was being built south of villages drawing hundreds of thousand gallons of water day. Bottom line was charging more for water in supposed water shortages.

We have since stopped all baths and showers, and our water bill has gone down by 75%.
Mind you, the cost of lice and flea powder has risen alarmingly, as we use quite a lot of it.

Interesting discussion for sure!
I heard once that a very good way to save water is "don't flush it unless it floats". Seems to me that one can kill two birds here. Conserve water by not flushing until the bowl contains floaters, and then when you DO flush, use that murky gray bath water you've been keeping in various buckets and jugs. Just pour it directly into the bowl: putting it in the tank first is not necessary.

I cut my irrigation watering in half by replacing popups with drippers/sprinklers years ago that actually watered plants and not the rocks and street. I don’t have grass.
On my early morning walks when irrigation is running I’ve adjusted many heads that were spraying too much into the street sending rivers of water down the gutters. I’ve found many street side zones run too long pouring water over the curb and down the gutter. They’re easy to adjust. You may need a pliers. Check yours.

Seen that many times at the Laurel Manor pool. No water flow control on any of our 3 showers, usually 3-4 showers per day if outside golf, or lawn care, in summer. Plus our laundry about 5-6 loads a week.
Inside water use 1324 gallons a month. Cooler months less than 800 gallons.

Water rationing won’t happen in “the free state of Florida.” You must be worried about the desert SW & Cali. Their water wars would be solved if they’d build desalination plants in Cali, capture snow melt & stop allowing landscaping that’s not native to the area, like turf grass. Additionally, Mexico has no right to US water yet we allow them to pull from our water resources. Florida has the opposite problemmost of the time—too much water.

Great idea but you may be unintentionally creating a mosquito breeding facility. Any standing water—even a thimble-full or a catch-tray under a planter—is a mosquito breeding location. To stop mosquitos, you can add & maintain a tiny amount of Mosquito Bits (Bt) which kills mosquito larvae & is not expensive. The bits need to be added again periodically to remain effective though. The active ingredient (Bt) is not harmful to birds, humans, etc. but it kills mosquito larvae.

Second year of what were we thinking staying in TV in summer. We do travel north during for short vaca the last two years for some snow, color change and lake time. Otherwise here fulltime, since Labor Day 2021, but with options.
Our other homes in TV were originally for parental use, then long term rentals. All 3 of our kids have full apartments for us in NC barrier island, the hills in KY. We still maintain northern family home, and lake house original log cabin built by great grand, then expanded to accommodate growing family, for 150 years, it will be passed down to next gen.
Maybe newer appliances use less water, and we don’t wait for water to warm for showers, in TV. Are you combining irrigation and potable water in those gallons? Our 1300 is just inside use.

YouTube for the “how to” ….
The flow restrictors in showers came into being somewhere in the 80's. In 1994 the Federal government required that all shower heads pass no more than 2.5 gal/minute of water. It also set standards for water use by dishwashers and washing machines.
Hotels and motels were early adapters of low-flow shower heads, viewing them as a way to save money. This was done without considering whether or not there was a water shortage in the area.
When I traveled for business, I made it a point to unscrew the shower head and remove the restrictor as many of the hotels/motels used shower heads with a flow rate of only 1.5 gal/minute. That low of a flow rate made for a miserable shower and, probably, doubled the time you spent in the shower to get the soap rinsed off.

I thought so too. It was great after TS Debby rolled through and we finally had water in ponds that had been close to empty, but nope we can’t have nice things here. TV just let the sprinklers run day after day until the ponds were back down to only 3/4 full. It makes no sense when there’s no new storm on the horizon. Then winter comes along with no rains and our ponds drop down to empty or almost empty again. Why remove water from ponds when there’s no major storm in the forecast? So frustrating!

I wouldn't drink it! It will contain whatever dust particles were in the air as it flowed past the cooling coils, including bacteria.
Think more on lines of radiator/battery water?

Time your showers to sync with your lawn irrigation and take your shower using the sprinklers. Although, some folks on here have irrigation that utilizes recycled water from the ponds(?) that is not very clean. And you know how some nosy neighbors will find just about anything to complain about.....even naked seniors taking a bi-weekly shower in their yard. If you need more than two showers per week, just find a neighbor that has a different scheduled day to water their lawns and shower in their yard. After all, some find it convenient to use your lawn as a toilet for their pet.

Just pour it directly into the bowl: putting it in the tank first is not necessary.
my daughter picked that up in college, & tried to implement that in our home. :22yikes: i did freak out & require a flush each time, BUT the new washer makes up for it, it cut the water bill by a third! so i'm kind of balanced out, lol

...you may be unintentionally creating a mosquito breeding facility.
A few drops of vegetable oil on the surface of standing water will block the larvae's breathing tubes
