Police seek help identifying man who installed credit card skimmer at Brookline supermarket (https://www.wcvb.com/article/credit-card-skimmer-brookline-supermarket/62186999)

The late to the game are still trying to get your cash!

Don't be afraid to hit the cover of the atm reader at the check out line.
Should be a standard daily check at the beginning and end of each day, but peop[le get complacent.

good luck

Increase penalties for this type of crime to something more meaningful.

I agree, but at the moment, can't get alot of traction of any meaningful criminal penalties, so it seems, the justice system takes way too long

I that is the problem with criminal activity in general. A justice system that moves with the speed of a snail coupled with low bail and the virtual certainty that if you DO get caught the penalty will be relatively light, are certainly not deterrents to crime. Quite the opposite in fact.

What does "hit the cover of the atm reader" mean? I've heard of them being installed over the CC slot on a gas pump, but I'm trying to imagine the state of lawlessness that must exist in Massachusetts for it to be possible for someone to walk in and install one on a reader in the middle of a busy super market.

Is there some new kind of CC stealer small enough to be installed with nobody noticing the installer? What does hitting it do? My CC barely works in tap mode as it is. I don't see how they'd be able to pick up my CC from even farther away than the real reader.

There was a surveillance video showing a customer distracting the cashier while an accomplish slipped a skimmer over the card swipe. I don't remember where it happened but if I can find it again I'll post the link here.

EDIT: Not the video I was thinking of but here is one (https://www.wcvb.com/article/credit-card-skimmer-brookline-supermarket/62186999) from just a couple days ago.

Tap-to-pay, including Apple Pay, works well for me.

Unfortunately, BJ's here doesn't have tap to pay or Google pay. You have to either insert your credit card, or pay cash.

Inserting the card should also be safe. Skimmers work by reading the magnetic strip, anything that uses the chip should be okay.

which was the point of my original statement, "late to the game. . "

Must have been a really cheap buy on the black market since fewer and fewer are swiping anymore, unless the chip doesn't work, which happens once in a blue moon, then one should get suspicious.

Getting to the point where if they don't have Apple Pay or Google Pay I don't return. I use Sam's because they have Scan and Go, not only in the store but also at the pumps. Pulling a credit card is always a last resort. Fortunately more places of business are providing the service plus pay at the table is getting more popular.
