Leesburg police are asking the public for information after an 87-year-old man sitting in a car at a gas station was shot by someone arguing with him Saturday afternoon.
Officers responded around 2:40 p.m. to a shooting reported at the Citgo along West Main Street, where it was determined three suspects had approached the vehicle — two on the passenger’s side and one on the driver’s side — before the shooting occurred.
A confrontation began and the suspect on the driver’s side then shot the man before all three suspects ran away, police said. The victim was hospitalized and underwent surgery Saturday night, according to a news release.
The 3 have not been apprehended so stay on your toes if you travel in the direction of the Leesburg Walmart or towards its downtown area.

The filling station would be more popular for those south of 44 that go to Walmart etc. The 44/ Thomas Ave. route is used by so many living near 44.

There are bad guys everywhere but I doubt these guys are lurking about the Citgo station waiting to randomly shoot someone else. Probably a road rage incident. You are one paranoid person. You'd better stay home (or carry a firearm like I do).
Never paranoid, just aware of my surroundings. It’s a military thing. Schema is recorded that there are 3, and they can simultaneously approach a vehicle on both sides.

One would think that three could simultaneously approach a vehicle from three sides, not just two.
Easy fix - don't drive into Leesburg for gas. The walmart or the station at Lake Deaton is easier to get to and likely safer.
Crime happens, find something more sensational to get excited about.

I looked carefully where this Walmart location is. It is the same one I wrote about years ago when husband wanted to quickly go around TV to go to a Walmart. There is designated police parking right in front. We have never been to a Walmart where it was necessary to designate parking spots for police. We went in the store - once, never again. Husband decided the long way in TV was ok with him afterwards.

For the record, those ‘police only parking’ spots exist at malls, plazas and retail centers across the country. It’s a courtesy. Doesn’t mean you’re in Hell’s Kitchen! (Apologies to gentrified Hell’s Kitchen for the sarcasm!)

I use that gas gas station all the time as I often go to Leesburg. I like it because it is less crowded than Lake Deaton. It is is kind of a sketchy area but it is a wide open place so I have always felt I would have time to see trouble approaching.

These incidents have occurred in different areas and Beverly Hills was featured very recently when 3 perps walked across a gas station lot to a guy who was standing there, threatened him and robbed him. If you watched this video in Leesburg, the guys came strolling across the lot.

One can find the same designated police parking, at shopping malls, hospitals, and clinics. The VA clinic in Mulberry has 3 reserved parking spaces for police parking. Walmart is just one of many retail that have reserve spots, in every state that we have worked in.

Lots of assumptions here. They could have easily bought a ride on a city bus to somewhere else or called in a friend to take them somewhere else.
Or taken someone else's vehicle which has not been reported as yet.

I saw the video. Horrifying! Wide open area at a gas station in Leesburg, three young guys in black hoodies on a hot Florida day walk up to a guy sitting in his car while pumping gas, apparently to rob him, and the guy talking to him shoots him. Then they run like wild dogs. I’ve bought gas there before. Are they long gone? I doubt it. They are probably Leesburg residents. I hope they are quickly caught and put down, one way or another. This didn’t happen in The Villages. It’s about twenty minutes from where I live here. But lots of us drive through there or stop there.

Seriously? Should I be glad you don’t care? These guys are still out there. Stopping for gas has now been determined to not be as safe as some thought at 2 in the afternoon. Perhaps they are long gone? Maybe they are just part of the homeless population still around? What we can determined for sure is they are armed, they are still out there, and they do shoot old people.
I don’t think we know the whole story. You don’t know if there was some kind of confrontation or road rage prior to the shooting. May not be that they walked up to some random car.

It is sad that people sit at their computer waiting to make negative comments for fun or thinking they are clever. Even RING Doorbell neighbor posts have keyboard cowards commenting rudely. Are there random shootings? Certainly . But more often something occurred prior to aggravate the individuals.
Road rage is just one example. It does occur against pedestrians too. Where did those shooters on foot run off to? Possibly a car parked elsewhere.
May not have been road rage at all but some other incident.
Point is we don’t know if this was a random act.

It seemed to me to be a GOOD warning that people in The Villages should NOT believe that there is NO crime here. People in The Villages are older and have more wealth than the surrounding area. That fact makes for robberies and confrontations. The boy scout motto is "be prepared". To be prepared you FIRST must be warned.

Disagree. As usual. One does not need to first be warned in order to be prepared. If one "is" always ready, one does not have to "get" ready. I have no warning an emergency is coming, but I am already prepared with a "To-Go" or "Bail-Out" bag and my vehicle parked backed in. Just an example.

I drove by yesterday and saw a silver haired dude pumping and wondered whether he was aware of the incident.
If one watches the video, one has to ponder, what would one do in the victim's place. How close does one let three dudes with hoods up get before reacting in some fashion. Draw on them ? Lean on the horn ? Jump in and lock the door ?

I can't tell what happened from the limited information, but i believe the victim was on the wrong place at the wrong time.
A lack of situational awareness is one of the top things criminals look for. They choose victims that are looking down, not paying attention, not looking at others in the eye. They like easy pickings. Walk and act with authority. A scowl towards someone you don't trust means you will fight back.

Warnings do help:
If a hurricane comes, it pretty much does what it does irrespective of our actions. The buildings that were going to be destroyed are still destroyed no matter our efforts. However, when we are fore warned, we can take precautions that save lives because we know a threat is out there.
Now, when you are in a neighborhood just outside The Villages pumping gas in route to Walmart from south of 44, you know there is a person in an area that has shot an innocent retiree and is still very much in our populace. The threat is still there and still exists because no one was caught. What may be more concerning is there is the callous of these perps that it is OK to shoot others.
I will look forward to there apprehension.

If you aren't warned that a hurricane is coming, you won't know that you need to go/bail out.
The only way you can TRULY be prepared for a hurricane *without* being warned that one is coming, is to already be evacuated to a place that never gets hurricanes.

I’m so sick of this TV Rambo commentary.
‘I would’ve done this’....’I do this’ narratives. It’s like after 9/11 actor Mark Wahlberg saying ‘if I was on that flight it wouldn’t have gone down like this’ (paraphrasing)
Maybe...maybe not.
Fight or flight is a real human condition. All these purported retired LEO know this. Every situation is different as is the response to said.
Yes, always being prepared, vigilant and aware...especially in this society...is a must. But it will always be only half the equation!
