Urologist for Kidney Stone

I searched through the postings but most listed under Urologist pertain to prostate issues. Suppose to leave Sunday to head to TV on Sunday but was at ER today with a kidney stone. Im hoping to still go but would like to line up an appt with someone before I head down. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I agree with Advanced Urology, however getting an appointment on short notice will be very difficult. If you are having pain (been there done that) you could contact one of the Urgent care facilities, or an ER. Contact your insurance carrier (ours has a 24/7/365 nurse on duty) and ask about their recommendations for your situation. I was advised that if any one or more symptoms occurred to go to the ER. In my case I was lucky and passed both stones.
I was an existing patient, and lead time for follow-up appointment was about 3 weeks, 2 more weeks for the cat scan, and then around 2 weeks for the follow up.
I would also have a discussion with your current doctor as to what to do in case you start showing symptoms.

I had no problem getting an appointment with Dr.Dersh after a 7 and a half hour wait at the ER before being seen. Dr.D fit me right in and IMO is an exceptional urologist. But, like I said, that's my opinion.

I had a stone a couple of years ago and went to the ER at The Villages Hospital (whatever it's called now). They X-rayed me, saw the stone, gave me Flomax and sent me home. I took the drug, flowed to the max and passed the stone. I never bothered with a urologist.

Ive had several instances with stones over the past `15 yrs.. and had lithotropsy procedure 3 times to break them up so I could pass them easier .. about 3 yrs ago after an xray at Dr Dersch's office it was found that I had 8 NEW stones... I was telling a friend and he said he used to have problems also and started taking 99mg potassuim citrate capsules.. I did a little research and read that it might help for calcium stones.. the capsules are cheap OTC and I've been taking 4 every morning now for about 2 yrs ... I just recently had a xray done when seeing Dr Dersch and am stone free still

If it’s an option, use someone at your local area. You will wait months in TV before getting an appointment

I find it interesting that the latest recommended daily amount of potassium is 4,700 mg, but most supplement tablets only contain 99 mg. I think it is almost impossible for a person to get 4,700 mg per day from food. This seems very strange to me. Does anyone know why?

In the meantime, if you are not diabetic this will help you pass the kidney stone at home. I have had stones for many years and had success with this technique a lot. In the refrigerated juice section of the grocery store look for and buy Simply Limeade (not Lemonade). Get about 4 or 5 bottles. During the day try to consume 3 or 4 glasses over the entire day. Do this for a week and half every day. The concentration of lime and citric acid is the perfect amount to make the stone break up and chemically start to break into smaller bits that you can easily pee out. I figured it out myself and passed many stones this way.

For over 10 years, my wife and I have been seen, and treated, for several kidney stones at Advanced Urology, by Dr. Edward King, (352-430-0705). He is in the office near Walmart north of Hwy 466 on Fridays but he can also be seen in Ocala. He is very compassionate and has taken good care of us.

Worst pain in the world. I had an ambulance take me to the ER so I wouldn’t have to wait. They didn’t wanna give me a painkiller till the doctor saw me and I said if he’s not here in 30 seconds, I’m gonna start screaming at the top of my lungs. He was there in 30 seconds and gave me something good! I eventually passed it, but they say drink lots of water and cranberry juice

Might want to look into UF or Advent Health. TV urologists are booked out thru Dec.

I would suggest seeking out a nephrologist.
Another poster mentioned Advent Health Waterman, and I concur. My sister and I have both had excellent care at Waterman.

Another tidbit… my dad was told by a urologist that he was a “ chronic stone former”. My dad found an excellent nephrologist who determined that he had a tumor on his parathyroid gland. He had surgery to remove it and did well for decades.

This is an irresponsible statement. It is fair to say that the system is overburdened and appointments can be much further out in time than what is needed, but saying there's no good care here makes no sense. I've been treated here for 2 cancers (bladder and colon), and several other issues and my wife's been treated for lung and brain cancer. We couldn't be happier with the service provided. We've had ER problems here and in Leesburg, but other than that, the experience with the medical establishment has been very good, if not outstanding.

I also saw Dr Marella. I met him when I went to ER due to a kidney stone. So big a stent had to be in. Was not going to pass on its own. Fast forward a few months and I ended up having hyperparathryoidism and 1 symptom is a kidney stone. Now have had surgery so hoping to never have a stone again
