Does anyone know how to insure a car that sits in a storage unit in Ohio nine months of the year and is driven three months of the year? Is the only way an auto policy or some kind of renters insurance?

You can put your car on a "storage" policy for 9 months.
Most carriers provide.

Call an Auto Insurance agent….or better yet, call a few for a quote.

We are Seasonal residents and leave one car in Michigan when we drive down to Florida. Before we leave, we contact our auto insurance agent and have them change to policy to "Storage". Then the homeowners policy will cover the car while it is parked in the garage. Before we head back, contact them again and ask to have it removed from Storage. Saves money and works for us.

I have talked to several auto insurance companies and explained my situation and none of them have mentioned that.

Homeowners policies exclude coverage for cars.
Keep comprehensive on it while it's in "storage".

I take off collision and keep comprehensive for fire, theft. Reduces the premium some.

That's what I'm running into it lowers your insurance a little but not much. It's close to paying for full coverage.

Good question . I always call my car insurance company and have them put the policy as in storage but only for 2 months otherwise you will have to get new car insurance every 9 months.
You would have to compare rates with homeowners if they insure a car versus auto .

Take off the liability coverage too. Be sure to call your agent before you drive it again to add coverage back on. Put a big note on the steering wheel to remind you!!

At 3 months, it is probably roughly a wash to just rent a car after allowing for depreciation of your vehicle, storage costs if you have to pay for it, and the cost of service, and paying insurance for 9 months for something that you are not using, but could be a liability. New cars depreciate at about 20% the first year. Older cars slower, but maintenance starts to rise. You also won't have the hassle of selling your lightly used car hoping to get full value because of its low mileage.

Contact your insurance company, let them know you are away and the car sits there. I forgot the term but they only leave the liability on it and when you go back, let them know and regular coverage will resume. Saves lots of $$$
