Roof Blue Tarp Installers

After Milton I noticed that some damaged roofs were very quickly covered with a temporary blue tarp. We had no damage but for future reference, if you were one of the unfortunate ones, how were you able to get a tarp installed so quickly? Who did you contact that was able to respond immediately? I just want to file this info in case of a future need. thanks.

I don't know what they do today, but, when I worked for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA and the Army Corps always had pre-negotiated contracts in place ready to activate immediately after an emergency. These included blue tarp roofs, bottled water, debris removal, and furnished trailers. For example, I remember when they had 10,000 house trailers parked in Atlanta, with contracts in place to move them anywhere. This prevented shortages and price gouging for these items. The Corps also had satellite equipped vehicles that could move into damaged areas within hours to provide office space with internet access. The funding was provided through FEMA, and preparing for emergencies was a fulltime job for hundreds of Federal employees. To me, it seems as though this type of preparedness has greatly declined.

With regards to blue tarps, FEMA "may" be able to recommend contractors do this work.

It looks like this program is activated for certain emergencies and is not something available everyday or for every storm.

Normally, the President needs to declare a Federal emergency for a specific area to release Federal funding.

I have friends that have shopped roofers before there was an event and worked out details with them, which included tarping the roof, pricing for small repairs and roof replacement if needed. Then if an event happens they have one call to make. They also included the insurance agent to make sure and everyone knew the process. The downside is since they did that work years ago they haven't needed it :)
