View Full Version : SECO - new meter

My monthly billing has arrived, showing the reading on my new meter. However, there is nothing in my account showing what the final reading was on my old meter when they switched it out. They put a flyer on my door telling me about the new meter, and that would have been the perfect place to note the "final" reading, but that would have been far too sensible.
A week ago I e-mailed SECO asking for that reading and they have just replied, saying that for "security reasons" they need copies of two Government-issued IDs. As if someone would be running a scam to get hold of the reading on a meter that is no longer in use!

That does not seem reasonable. I would ask then to mail the final reading to the address they send your bill. If they do not I would file a complaint with the state because they are not being reasonable.

Had the new meter installed.
Lots of questions to SECO, but no answers.

Did not have to show ID................smells funny.

TWO forms yet, LOL, that's interesting. I've found some very simple requests are often nearly impossible to have honored ! I have been trying to have my Expedia account AND all my personal information "deleted" from their records. For over a year now they have continued to send me FORMS, FORMS, and more FORMS. I have returned them all, they continue to email my that they can not fill my request "yet"... stating the need more information. I also have had to call (as instructed on their website). I have logged every phone call. I have made a copy of every form I've had to fill out out. As the words to Hotel California tell us, you can check out any time you want but, YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE.
This week I got a letter with MORE forms to fill out and return (seems like the same information on every form, name, account number, address, etc.) and they reminded me in the letter of ALL THE TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES I "could" encounter by separating from them ! They also reminded me that "BY LAW" we are NOT ALLOWED delete ALL of your personal information ! With all the identity theft, seems it's best to never open an account with any online presence ? Also beginning to tire of the "just point your cell phone here, there, etc. etc. Guess I'm not appreciating "progress"...LOL !

Are you simply curious about what the final reading was or are you trying to catch them making a bad reading? I can help with the first but it sounds like you might need the IDs for the second (though two IDs does sound a bit unreasonable).
The technician put the hanger on your door before he started then he changed the meter and left. My technician took a picture of the old meter before it was removed and I assume that was to capture the reading for the final bill. My guess is the technician doesn't have the time to revisit the hanger and write the numbers down plus what he wrote down would not be the official final reading and could cause problems if he wrote it incorrectly.

Meter person took a picture of the reading on the old meter before replacing.... note, not a Seco employee, and outside contractor...not that it matters, only took about 2 minutes to change.

Thank you Bill145464
I just like to keep track of my usage out of interest. The $ amount seems reasonable, so I think they have got it right, but I would like to find out the exact number if possible.

Look at your current t bill and find the PRIOR, CURRENT, and KWH USED numbers. Calculate:
KWH USED - (CURRENT - PRIOR). = OTHER METER
OTHER METER is the amount of power they say you used before the meter was swapped out.
Now look at your last bill and find CURRENT. Calculate:
OTHER METER + CURRENT = FINAL READING
FINAL READING is the number they say was on your old meter before it was removed. If you can get the picture they took when they removed it then you could verify that the reading was correct.
Another calculation you could do involves DAYS SERVICE.
For the new bill calculate (CURRENT - PRIOR)/DAYS SERVICE
From the last bill calculate KWH USED / DAYS SERVICE
These numbers give your KWH USED per day with the new and old meters. If the weather was the same and you were home the whole time then the numbers should be quite close. For me, since cooler weather has moved in and I was gone for a week my current usage is about 13% lower than it was last month.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.
They have come back with the usage (not the actual meter reading) which seems reasonable and is all I need to keep my spreadsheet up to date :-)

Mine was changed yesterday. I heard some noise outside, but thought it was a yard crew next door. It was sunny, and I didn’t have any lights on. I wouldn’t have known anything was done, except that there was a surge when the electricity came back on that turned on all five of my LED reading lights on poles around the house.

I really suggest people download the SECO Power hub app.

Some, not all. I did not shut off power and have had no problems 90 days later.

SECO is instaling Smart Meters - I guess they help us monitor usage, and maybe send readings automatically every month?

My question is are these brand new meters? Because I just looked at last months bill and the current one and I have a past reading and a current reading. I am not sure when our meter was changed though because we are not full time residents.

This month's PAST reading was last month's CURRENT. They provide both so you can see the subtraction to get KWH USED.
When my new meter was installed it started at 0 which gives me much reason to believe they are new meters.

The surge is to blame for my a/c blower motor being fried.

Should be lucky that you have SECO ! First they are much less that other Florida Power Companies, more reliable and they use modern technology!

I agree Seco should have shown the two readings. I saw the Seco tech changing my neighbor's meter and immediately noted my meter reading. Upon receipt of my bill I read my meter and did a quick calculation to ensure the kWh charged were correct. Since 2 days had elapsed since the reading I expected a slight difference. My usage appears correct based on the usage reported on my bill.

I was away the week my meter was exchanged. When I returned home my air conditioner no longer worked. Seems a capacitor was blown.
I’m thinking it may have been due to the power being cut off while my air conditioner was running.

Just curious if anyone else has had this email from SECO. We got the new meter over a month ago and received the bill in the mail as usual. But that was followed up by an email a few days later with my bill broke down into categories and the cost for each category. Pool pump $XX, lights $XX, laundry $XX, cooking $XX, A/C $XX and so on for a dozen or so categories. The thing that confused me was the thirty some-odd dollars for cooking when we have a gas stove. I'm wondering how the meter could differentiate usage between all the categories?

It is guessing based on the inputs you provided for your home profile. If you have provided nothing then it is a WAG. Login to your account, fill out the home profile, wait a couple of months, then see if it doesn’t look better.

There should be a question mark at the end of your sentence.
Power flickers on and off a few times a year, or maybe off for a longer time.
