Auto cat litter box recommendations?

I’ve had to bring my old cat down to live with me; I want to get an automatic self-cleaning litter box. I have read a lot of reviews from companies and on Amazon but I still don’t know what is best. Any advice from anyone who actually has an auto litter box? Thanks in advance!

OK, you are asking the wrong audience, you need to be asking your cat (sorry I could not resist) I have had cats for over 50 years and never used an automatic litter box. If the cat does not like it, it is not going to work. I have found a regular litter box, and a foldable seat work very well for me. I setup the seat, get a one time bag that i saved from shopping empty the 2 litter boxes, close the bag, and fold the seat back up. I would not try to change an older cat, IMHO.

I think litter robot is fantastic. It’s expensive but very well made. The question is will your older cat use it….. I got it when my cat was small. I’d recommend a regular litter box, or whatever the cat is used to and trying the type of litter like pretty litter ( brand). It’s very very lightweight and so easy to clean and scoop. I’m not sure if auto litter boxes can use that though. Good luck.

We have a 16 yo hemi, she has never been a fan of litter. So we use potty pads cut in half on a grid litter pan. She also will only use each pad once.

When we travel over night, we also have auto litter that has very shallow litter with a potty pad underneath.
She will use both while we are gone for 1.5 days. Auto will scoop everything to one end, smooth out and repeat. She has no issues with using both while we are gone. Didn’t start using auto litter until she was 14.

We have tried using a twice a day sitter, she refuses to eat, with multiple different sitters, so auto is the only way. She is not a people person, and truly hates any other animals.

We have refrigerated auto food, which she uses only when we travel, what food she doesn’t eat in 2 hours, the lid closes to keep cold and fresh. Rotating every 8 hours, with 4 feedings. She eats twice a day.

So there is hope for older cats, but will warn, auto litter is like a new toy, ours jumped in and out for days to watch it move.;)

I will never own a cat without having a litter robot. Yes, they're expensive but well worth it.

We gave our daughter a Litter Robot for Christmas two years ago and she said it is "life changing". She HATED to change the litter box and said she often delayed going to be because she changed the box before bed.

Kate has a medium size indoor cat and Kate now changes it "every few weeks".

Expensive--but really great...

A lot depends on the cat and specifically the size of the cat. We have two Maine Coons. Finding an automated litter box for a cat that weighs in at 20-25 lbs and is very long and tall is difficult. We tried several, but every time they seemed to work well for a month or two, then start having issues. We are now back to using litter boxes.

One thing that helped tremendously was installing a motion activated fan in the ceiling over the litter box. The difference in smell is night and day!

One of our daughters has a cat, and here in the UK they are free to roam outside.
Indoors he has a litter tray for emergencies, but now he is getting on in years, he uses it more often. To such an extent, he will come in from outside, have a dump, then go straight out again. :shrug:

I agree. It’s a fantastic product and has been around a really long time. I got mine nearly 20 years ago. I know this because my cat’s passed away last year at 19 years old.
