After wait a week for a quote after they look at the roof and took pictures i recieved a nasty email stating they lost the pictures and do not want to do the wasted Legwork in giving a estimate. My husband stated are you sure you have the correct customer?. Brent the owner replied yes and he stated to my husband that his phone is blowing up and he has lost pictures and our quote. HMMMMM if this isn't a red flag i don't know what is.
He also stated to my husband that he owns 3 houses in the villages and he is easy to get along with, hmmmm again. After talking to a nieghbor that used them, they said once they suck you in to get you to sign the contract thier follow up is terrible.
I don't know why Brent stated he owns 3 houses in the villages and what that has to do with anything?
Beware of them.
I sure im going to get negative post regarding warning people. Its only a warning do what you choose to!

I found their quote to be a lot higher than Sack Roofing for same shingles etc. When I told them they were too high he said they could not do anything. Used Sack and very satisfied.

I would never use a company that needs to advertise as much as they do. Good roofers have all the work they need by word of mouth.

I have always wondered if there might be a bit more to their story. By that I mean all the posted reviews (RAVE reviews I might add), posted on ND and other social media sites make a big point of "call Brent" he's one of us, a villager, implied of course is, you can trust him, he's one of our neighbors, just another senior. But, as I processed that, I started to wonder what the "rest of the story" was. Would someone who owns a big roofing company really move into a development for retired folks when there are so many family villages ? Or, is "Brent" really a retired person working part time as so many do, as a representative for this company, maybe commissioned for each fellow villager they can sign up ? I have no idea, but it does sound like a good marketing plan for an roofing (or other) company. Hire a sales rep that is a (semi ?) retired villager, it implies without stating it, hey, you are going to be golfing, playing bocci or pickle-ball, going to socials and club meetings with this person, so the potential customer could make the leap to the thought that this is a person you live and socialize with, so safety in that ? I have no idea. but if I had a company, and wanted to really promote trust, sounds to me like being able to say, ---------- company, owned by a villager, etc. etc. That could be an advantage, but it could also mean absolutely nothing ! ?

Same here, they did our roof just 2 weeks ago. Their quote was a little higher, but we chose a slightly higher type of shingle, so basically the same. Their follow through from signing to completion was excellent. Our impression of Brent is the complete opposite from the OP. But, things can happen to change one person's perception compared to another.

1. Roofing Quality. There are huge differences in roofer quality. The shingle is typically only about 25 percent of the cost you pay for a new roof.

2. Smart Business. An intelligent roofing contractor knows that if you buy based on the lowest price it is a waste of their time and yours giving you a quote. All you will do is claim they are a rip off because of their higher price

3. Roof Effectiveness. Many roofers build to minimal standards. A quality roofer builds for extreme weather. There is a big difference.

4. Manufacturers. There are cheaper shingles with the same claimed warranty. For example. IKO and TAMKO and AtLas cost much less than GAF or CERTAINTEED. To the naive. They're the same. Just try to file a claim from an inferior company.

5. Don't Be Fooled. Buying a roof solely on price is like choosing a steak restaurant solely on price. There can be huge differences in how roofs are installed... Just like there can be huge differences in how a chef prepared a meal.

6. Summary. You can't know if you got a good roof for at least 3 to 5 years until it's performed well through multiple extreme storms. Just because they're nice doesn't mean they did a good job.

7. Some detailed examples. Were the pipe boots typical that wear out in 5 years and leak or superior that last a lifetime? Did they use pro starter strips at the rake and eave for extreme wind uplift or so the typical 3 tab on just eaves? Did they use roofing nails that come loose or special rang shank that perform much better? Six versus the typical 4 nails? Adjust the air pressure ever hour to avoid under or over fastener depth? Did they custom make new flashing or so the typical reuse of what was there before? Did they make sure the air intake in the attic was unblocked or the typical ignoring it resulting in in higher utility costs... Roof wearing out prematurely and voiding the manufacturer warranty. These are just a few examples.

BEWARE of people shaming a company for not going through the expense of preparing a quote for people who purchase based on the lowest price and think roofing contractors are a commodity.

We used them and Brent was our rep. He doesn’t own the company. He had always been professional, was quick to respond to calls and emails and they did a fabulous job for us. Clean up was excellent. Neighbors had another company roof their house and after a week I’m still seeing loose shingles flying into my yard and others from that job. We did have an issue with some gutters and they sent gutter guys out quickly to remedy the problem. I thought their customer service was top notch!

Certainteed is the product The Villages used to roof the houses. Skylight also Carrie’s other products like Owens Corning.

Would love to see a post like Professor Dave's that outlines what people should look for in a quality vs basic roofing job. Maybe a retired roofer? Things like the Professor outlined: new flashing vs reused, 6 nails per tab vs 4, brands of quality shingle, etc.

I would print that out and file it away for the day I need a new roof.

Another related trane of thought.... is it possible that buying upgraded- longer warranty shingles is not necessary as the insurance companies require replacement before the warranty terms expire. Just an observation.

I agree. And I believe that some customers come off as more friendly than others but as you say...That could mean absolutely nothing. I am very skeptical about all roofers these days. I do hope that folks don't get suckered in. Our insurance fees are higher than kites now.

……and be sure to inspect the packaging for the shingles, inspect the nails, count the number of times that nailer hits the roof for each shingle, etc. Just try to insure whatever “contract” you sign (better yet get a spec sheet for them to sign) specifies the product and install method. Seems like most tradesmen like to leave a lot of wiggle room however. .

It doesn't take many disaffected customers to negatively affect a business. As Winston Churchill said "a lie can get halfway around the world before Truth can get its pants on". That is not to say that the complaint written about here wasn't real, but it certainly does seem to go against the prevailing wisdom regarding this roofing company.

That said however, I'd NEVER agree to a large job by anyone unless I had a written quote beforehand and an understanding that no payment would be forthcoming until the job was completed. We've had three jobs done and an ongoing service arranged since we moved here that I couldn't do myself, and in each case it was 1) do extensive research on who is the best and most reliable; 2) contact 2-3 vendors from the list and ask for quotes; and 3) get the contracts signed and let them go to work. We've not been disappointed in the least using this process.

Excellent post! I question the quality of CertainTeed. I would look at Owens Corning Duration or Malarkey Vista.

Certainteed has the most asphalt. You do know your roofing... Malarkey is the best... Didn't think it was available in Florida. I don't care for OC as much as Certainteed ... But as you might tell by this post... I see more data than most would.... GAF has the best fiberglass mat... But that's only real important in the colder climates.

Well there was NOTHING wrong with my roof, but due to all insurance scams I had to replace it in less than 2 months during Covid when shingles were hard to get to get insurance. I had three estimates. The only one I trusted to do work was batterbee’s really has nothing do with company but the contracted crew they work with.

I could not find 1 nail or piece of shingle after they were done. I watched them put roof on. crew was was quick, thorough, and precise. The price was on higher side OC shingles, but not highest of other estimates. Guy down street when cheap and has already had leaks plus it took them three days same size roof as mine and left crap everywhere. I don’t mind paying more for good job. But that’s me. I thing this was before company in question, cause I don’t remember seeing that company?

From the SkyLight Roofing Villages Family of responsible roofers:

This post above truly makes no sense to me personally, nor any of the individuals working for SkyLight Roofing Villages.

In fact, this response is highly suspicious.

One, we have never sucked anyone into a contract.

Two, We don’t solicit and are a “Villages Preferred Roofer”.

Three, have no idea about lost pictures because that makes no sense unless they were doing a CertainTeed warranty claim that we have no affiliation with.

Yes, I’m Brent Maloy and I’m a Villager, I own properties here, my family knew the Morse Family, I have 12 Crews here that are highly dependable and some of the best roofers in the Country, we are Family owned & operated, and have three local offices.

I’m not even sure what the rant above is all about because we have been voted the FAVE roofer by way of community, quality, communication, price, and no subcontractors here in The Villages for over 5-years.

If you would Kindly and Lovingly need a bit of clarification on the “Hmmmmmm’s” above - my phone ☎️ is open to you 24 hours.

From the SkyLight Roofing Villages Family:

“We have done our best to moderate, communicate, and respond to this podt as we are quite baffled and cannot (for the life of us) decipher the “rant” and its origin.

We have left messages for “Chellybean” and have not heard anything. It simply seems that they had a warranty issue with CertainTeed and mistook us for being a roofing laminate manufacturer?

We have never seen a post quite like this…about Brent (A Villager and Affiliated Resident), a missing quote (which is never the case), we never have issues with sucking people into quotes as we only serve neighbors by way of referral.

Working and Living in The Villages for many - many years - You (humbly) build a strong relationship

It means everything to me managing and serving our Villagers every day - And doing so in a very upright and honest manner.

I would never use a company that needs to advertise as much as they do. Good roofers have all the work they need by word of mouth.

Advertising is quintessential to your existence because we are able to keep everyone informed and 100% of most all Villagers have greatly appreciated the updates and vital FL regulation updates, first responder attention, and having no subs here. No solicitation- only by way of referral.

For what it's worth, if I needed a new roof, I would tend to avoid a company that does too much advertising and has too many 5-star reviews that only show the reviewer's first name, with no location for the reviewer. Also, I don't trust Google or Trustpilot reviews. Call me skeptical, but that is my opinion.

Use nothing but the best in The Villages - And In Florida

Owens Corning TruDefinition has the surenail suspension strip (the only shingle with that nylon barrier), copper streak guard, earthly material weight, mid-fiberglass interior, triple-dip heat bloat seal, and has proven to be overall strongest 130 over-all other competitors here locally against barometer impacts, wind-shear, hurricanes, heat penetration, and durability. Transferrable Warranty.

As the leading brand among roofing manufacturers in the United States, Owens Corning provides a wide range of shingle styles and colors for any home here in TV’s. Homeowners and roofing professionals trust Owens Corning to deliver the highest quality and most reliable roofing products in Florida.

Google reviews are notorious for being fake. Just Google it. But, when a company touts their 5-star Google reviews on their website to promote their company, I feel like they are insulting my intelligence.

We used skylight as did almost all in our villa neighborhood. Everyone has been pleased.

Skylight was one of three estimates we had this past spring, We ended up choosing another vendor; however, I found Brent to be very professional and not pushy at all. He answered any, and all questions we had throughout our selection process. Although we used another company, I would recommend getting an estimate from him.

So could this be a Spouse screwed up, didn’t want to admit.. and is blaming a company that may or may not have been involved?
I would screenshot the email..with the company name… not have my spouse post a complaint without having exact information from a email, for verification. Hearsay just doesn’t work for some. Especially since some of the OPs post is from an unknown neighbor for some of the complaint, that wasn’t part of the original “Email”

I'm an official Google reviewer. They're called "Local Guides". I don't give fake reviews. There's nothing in it for me, I don't get paid, I don't get perks other than a nifty star next to my name on the review to show people that I'm a Local Guide, and I believe the star turns a different color if I reach the next "level" of being a Local Guide. The levels are based on how many reviews you do, not how you rate different places or products.

So if you want to check reviews for places, check the google reviews and count only the "Local Guide" reviews.

I had some shingles come off in the last hurricane. I called SkyLight Roofing for a quote. When I told a friend what the quote was they said that sounded high, and I should get another quote. I did. The 2nd quote, by a reputable roofer who does a lot of work in The Villages, was 1/3 the quote of SkyLight. Obviously, I went with the 2nd roofer.

My note was kindly and simply wanted to clear the air on any confusion there might have been. I’m still very confused - Even with this post.

Then I realized, after looking at other ChellyBean responses, that this person may need a “hug” because they are simply not happy people (person) to begin with. I wish them the very best.

“So here is my story. My 4 year old roof leaked after the last hurricane. I Called the original roofer and also Skylight, since they had so many good reviews. Brent Maloy called from Sky Light (before my roofer called back). He fixed the leak for a very reasonable price and explained how the FLASHING WAS NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY when I had my roof replaced.
