They do cover those items, but some stores, like Walgreens, will not process a Medicare claim for them. You may need to find a medical supply store.

If you only need these for a short time the VHA Helping Hands provides many of these type of items for free (a donation is suggested) for 3 months, they are located near Killian's Ice Cream is Spanish Springs.

Thanks Tink, seems like the best way to go.

I got a basic walker for free via my advantage plan with a Dr. Rx while I was in the hospital. A cane likely works the same way. These items are DME- Durable Medical Equipment. Find a local DME outfit or ask your doc.

Dealt with this for my dad. It is covered, BUT only if doctor says it required to be mobile INSIDE the house.
So they won’t cover a scooter, if it’s only needed to get around outside the house.
It’s probably cheaper and easier to get a cane retail. For the walker, find one online (same for the scooter or a chair that rises to get you up)

My parents both got walkers and transport chairs with funds from Medicare. It could be the plan they got, that provided a dollar amount toward the cost after a co-pay? Or it might've been full coverage up to a yearly max. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan it might cover up to a dollar maximum per year on durable medical devices.
I think it really just depends on the plan.

Canes and walkers are covered by Medicare with a prescription order. Independent pharmacies like Villages Pharmacy will bill Medicare and in most cases accept assignment on these mobility aids.

If you own property in The Villages you may borrow almost all of those things from the VHA site, open only at certain times of the day and run by volunteers. This is the Villages backed group, not the POA. As said before it is located in Spanish Springs behind the ice cream store. I have borrowed a walker and a wheelchair and I know of many people who have used items there for several years. You must be a Villager to take part in this. Be sure to thank the volunteers.

Yup. Wife volunteers there. Equipment is first class. All items are sanitized after each loan. Great organization

Be sure your doctor approves it and deems it medically necessary.

I have both and they are yours for free if you want them. I live in the Village of Charlotte. Email me at malakoz@yahoo.com and we can make arrangements for you to pick them up. The cane has 2 different legs, is adjustable and was never used. The walker I used for about 2 weeks.
