Google News shows some articles in '04 and '06 in NYT, Philadelphia Inquirer, St. Lois Post Dispatch, a few others. Coverage appears to have been limited. That does seem odd. Whatever the full story, the statue itself is beautiful.

It's a beautiful statue located at the Cape Liberty cruise port. The RCCL cruise ship Explorer of the Seas sails past it whenever coming in or going out on a cruise. Have enjoyed the view many times:clap2:

The Snopes article did state:
"Contrary to the claim of the eRumor, the announcement of the intended memorial as well as its dedication did receive nationwide news coverage including a visit to New Jersey on September 15, 2005, by Russian president Vladimir Putin for the groundbreaking ceremony."
Perhaps more coverage would have been nice, but with all due respect I don't think "nationwide news coverage" warrants a "didn't get much press" status!
