Don't delay. Get a pro ASAP, and get it out.
I often see biz cards at local small businesses. Just saw a card wall at NYPD Pizza this weekend. Ace Hardwares?

I had illegal immigrants at my previous res in a fairly rural area. Already experienced with my raccoon trap and thought I could handle it. Broke in, patched. Broke in, patched. Had babies.
I won't go on.
Lots of damage, and smell that I'm not sure ever went away completely.

ASAP. Show no mercy. They looks so cute, but . . .

I found at least one thread from the past that might be helpful.

OP, you may want to try some rat poison before calling an expert.

Echoing other posters--call the professionals! Especially as it concerns raccoons--they're smart and can be dangerous.

I recommend Florida Pest Control. We've had a contract with them for going on four years now and couldn't be happier. They do advertise "wildlife" control as one of their services and I'd think that includes raccoons.

They know their stuff.

I'd advise against that. Even if the critter eats the poison, it will most likely crawl off into some small space to die and then you WILL find it, but only after its advanced state of decomposition advertise its presence and by then those fluids will have leaked down into lord-knows-what. plus a full-grown adult raccoon can tip the scales at over 50 lbs. and that represents a LOT of cleanup. Think "dead bulldog" rotting away in your attic.

Call a pro.

NOPE. Might work, then you'd have a dead raccoon in your attic. And maybe dead babies also.

I thought that rat poison made the animal thirsty and they went outside to drink. Drinking water made them die outside.

We have used Gary DePalma - garyldepalma@gmail.com - twice with good results.

Call now and maybe he will just have to catch the mother, not babies as well.

They got in through the large, round vents on top of the roof - ripped away the metal grille (which may have been rusty) - but also pulled away the soffit at one point and somehow swung in under there - clever beasts!

I agree. Critter Control is going to remove raccoons and squirrels and repairs holes and clean up attic. Four entrances were found that I was not aware of. For most people this is not a do it yourself project. Thanks to all of you who replied.

If Massey or another similar company does your pest/bug control, contact them.

Don't mess with raccoons, and don't use rat poison. Call a professional trapper. Raccoons can carry rabies and their feces (poop) can contain Baylisascariasis, also known as raccoon roundworm, is a rare but potentially fatal disease caused by the ingestion of eggs from the feces of raccoons. Raccoons often defecate in communal latrines, which can be found at the base of trees, in attics, or on flat surfaces. The eggs can survive in the environment for several years. We have had 4 raccoons trapped in the last year here in the Sumter area. They would defecate on the wall behind our home in the water feature in the backyard. They are smart and can figure out how to avoid traps. Raccoons are a nuisance animal in the State of Florida. By law you cannot relocate these critters without written permission from any land owner they are released on and will find their way back home even if released 40 miles away. It appears there is a raccoon invasion here in The Villages. Which could manifest into a larger problem for all residents. Seeing raccoons during the daytime is a potential sign of rabies.

I thought that rat poison made the animal thirsty and they went outside to drink. Drinking water made them die outside.

If they go outside to drink, then another animal, like a coyote or Bobcat or Bald Eagle will eat it and die too.

Rat poison doesn't just kill the first animal that eats it, it will also kill any animal that eats the first one.

Horrible stuff.

Call Brian Payne of Critter Pro 352-835-5866. Tell him you were referred by The Villages Metal Detecting Club.

We had them in NY once. I hired a really nice and big guy who got the babies out and then trapped the momma in a cage. She was VERY mad! I asked him if he was taking them for release somewhere upstate. He looked at me with a big smile and said, in a very strong southern accent, "No sir, racoon soup tonight!". I laughed and gave him about $200 in cash.

I had a pet raccoon for 13 years. Super great pet.
I would try throwing a bunch of moth balls in the attic. You have to find where they got in.
