Signed up with Xfinity in Oct 2020 when I moved in. I had a 30 day "no risk" - cancel for any reason contract. I paid for my first month and the installation fee. My download speeds were terrible, so I cancelled 2 weeks later and returned my equipment. 4 YEARS LATER, I receive a collection notice for $404.12. Contacted xfinity and the collection service and gave them all the information thinking this was mistaken identity or an administrative error. No matter the evidence of payments made, etc., they still say I owe the $404.12 (they say it's for service not equipment). Yes, it's showing on my credit now, but #1 - I don't do anything credit, so they will wait for Hades to freeze over before I pay a dime I don't owe....and #2 - It's the principle of them creating a fictitious charge and even when called out, they won't budge.
My recommendation - DO NOT use Xfinity. If they can create bogus charges 4 years later and not work to resolve the issue with me, I assure you, they will do it to others.

I second, are you sure its Xfinity reaching out to you? The other thing maybe is someone set up service under your name and they are now trying to charge you. I've never heard of them coming out to a customer years later.
When I had spectrum, although I returned the equipment and had the receipts they still continued to bill me but I knew right away. They eventualy corrected my account.

Some years ago while living in Va this happened to me with another company. Turns out they sold receivables to a collection agency for pennies on the dollar and they called and called.

Dispute the charge in writing and demand proof of debt. Procedure must be followed. I had this with cable returned equipment which I had a receipt for and collections went away. They will have to then sue you to collect. Unlikely to happen with facts provided.

Reply to the bottom feeding collection agency that you deny the claim and that will be the end of it as they won't go to court for $400.00. I've been fighting a similar build through a different service company for over a year now and have been keeping a accurate paper trail, I never talk on the phone, either US mail or e-mail so I have everything in writing. So far in the 13 month period the claim has been sold to 3 different collection companies.

I second this - talking to the people in the store should quickly resolve your issue; those on the phone are often not as clued in and don't have the authority to take the action required.

I have been using CenturyLink and now Quantum and yes, I have fiber at the house. Great speeds… I have 950GB for $75, just switched my neighbor to Quantum and got her 500GB for $50 and moved her landline to them as well for $40 a month… saved her $1200 a year. I use Roku sticks so all TVs in the house are the same and have YouTube TV for another $70 a month.

Your math doesn't seem to add up. Your neighbor is paying $90 per month for 500gb Internet speed and a landline, and that saves them $1200 per year? Also, YoutubeTV is $83 per month, not $70.
biker1
12-12-2024, 07:59 AM
$40 per month for a landline? You can get a VoIP landline for a fraction of that. For example, Ooma is about $7 per month, IIRC. YouTubeTV is actually about $82 per month.

4 YEARS LATER, I receive a collection notice for $404.12.
In Florida, the statute of limitations for a breach of contract is generally as follows:
Written Contracts: The statute of limitations is five years from the date of the breach.
Oral Contracts: The statute of limitations is four years from the date of the breach.
Specific Performance: If the remedy sought is specific performance where the court orders the breaching party--which is you in this situation--to fulfill the terms of the contract, the statute of limitations is one year from the breach--so Xfinity is SOL.
These time frames are important because if a lawsuit is not filed within these periods, the claim may be barred, and the defendant can use the statute of limitations as a defense to dismiss the case.
In your situation, your desired remedy could be the removal of the derogatory comment at the credit bureau level. If you'd like to get that removed, ask an AI such as ChatGPT or GrokAI, to assist you in writing a letter to Xfinity.

If it is Xfinity, then they can do nothing now that a collection agency owns the debt. I worked in the AR field. You now have to deal with the agency only. You can’t even pay Xfinity if you wanted to get rid of the debt. I’m sure the agency can prove you owe the debt to show it’s valid. If not, they will drop the case. If they do prove it (no matter how much you disagree) you need to pay it. Otherwise, it will be your worst nightmare the next 15 years. Don’t cut off your nose, despite your face. It’s not worth your credit rating tanking and can’t buy any asset, or being contacted and pestered for 15 years. Principal be damned. My time and blood pressure are more important than $400 any day of the week. Btw, I had Xfinity for 3 years and stopped service, took my equipment back to the store and received a credit check back in the mail afterwards. Sounds like you had a minimum sign up timeline you didn’t pay for. Pay it and move on.

It's $82-$83 per month after you add the taxes and fees. Yes, they do offer a promotional rate for new customers, but that is only for 4 months.
Note that in January the YouTubeTV price will be $93 per month. $82.99 + taxes and fees = $93.

Xfinity does offer a no-cap plan for an additional fee but it's base rate is high enough already.

Call Xfinity or stop by and make sure it's them. Resolve if possible and get Everything in writing. We stopped over a year ago and went with Verizon for internet and UTUBE TV for tv. We turned in all equipment and had a receipt. Xfinity bots on text and the phone harassed us continually. Yes I sent a stop, and they used other numbers. They must be desperate.
Good luck.
We will be pausing UTUBE TV the first of the year due to the $10 price increase. Time to use the antenna.

We went through a similar thing with them but it was only $65. I would not pay because I did not owe it. I kept a record and documented everything. Sent documentation to their billing office in Philadelphia but that was a wast to time. They sent it to a collection agency and I replied to them with the documentation and told them I would be happy to go to court and let a Judge determine who was right. They quickly dropped the claim for the money. :boom:

Profits are down, too many options, etc.
They just went through their billing and service files for any missing payments
Looks like you didn't cancel within the proper time limit to the minute,
and therefore they missed billing you for the first month of service
Had it happen to us with Verizon. We didn't even take delivery for a scam phone purchase, and had the phone sent back to Verizon. However, that never went to the service billing department and they billed the first and then got caught up with the return. Had documentation to send to every collection agency, and they always sent it back to verizon. Verizon offered a 50% payment and we took it. Didn't alter our credit for buying cars. . . Just gets to be a pain every 3-6 months.
Just a pain in the ass when the service and marketing and billing suck, and the company is looking for any revenue anywhere.
good luck
